In 326 AD, Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, traveled to Jerusalem and claimed she had discovered the true cross. Fragments were brought back to Rome. Today, more than 1,500 churches around the world claim to possess pieces of it. The Vatican holds the largest collection. Independent scientists have never been allowed to test them. In 1870, French researcher Charles Rohault de Fleury studied every known fragment. His conclusion shocked historians. The total volume of all surviving pieces was far smaller than a real cross would have been. So, the relic wasn't fake by quantity, but one question still remains. Do any fragments actually come from 1st century Jerusalem? Carbon dating has existed since 1949. The Vatican has never submitted a single fragment for testing.
