This video exposes the ecological fallacy of tree replacement policies, highlighting that saplings cannot offset the immediate loss of century-old biodiversity. It is a sobering look at how urban development often prioritizes short-term expansion over irreplaceable natural capital.

280 Significant Trees - to be felled in North Adelaide #gardencityAñadido:
Hi, it's Lestyn Oz here in the North Adelaide Park Lands.
I'm looking around the boundary fence of the redevelopment of the North Adelaide Golf Course.
Uh it's been approved against the advice of the local landscape authorities and in contravention of the Greening Adelaide Strategic Plan.
Um but they will be removing 585 mature trees to make way for the golf course redevelopment.
And 280 of those trees are classed as significant, meaning they have a trunk circumference of at least 2 m.
Uh they're meant to be protected by legislation, but I guess that doesn't apply to when there's big money to be made by hosting international golfing tournaments.
Found a golf ball.
Mhm. So, I don't know if this one is one that's going to be removed. I doubt it because it's on the outside of the perimeter the construction zone fence.
You can't get in there at all. They've fenced the whole thing off. I think mainly because it's technically a construction zone, but quite possibly also to avoid too much scrutiny.
Or the you know, the distasteful sight of trees being removed, which I'm sure a lot of local residents would actually record if they could, but they won't be able to get in there.
Those responsible have promised to replace each felled tree with three seedlings, but those seedlings won't come close to providing the habitat value of older trees, not for 20 years or more, and they don't form hollows until around 80 to 100 years old.
Here's a good illustration of the ecological difference between the mature gum trees like this one and over here some seedlings planted. If you compare the ecological value of this tree, that's what they think is a replacement for that.
