[00:00:16]This is the unfiltered history of Master Chief Carl Brashear. When Carl enlisted in the Navy in 1948, the military establishment had a very specific segregated plan for him. He was supposed to spend his entire career working in the galley, serving food to white officers. White candidates left vile notes on his bunk, [music] threatening to drown him if he ever entered the water. Carl ignored the terror, out-trained every man in his class, and became a premier salvage diver. But, in 1966, during a high-stakes mission to recover a lost hydrogen bomb off the coast of Spain, disaster struck. A heavy steel cable snapped on deck, whipping across the ship, and completely shattering Carl's left leg below the knee. The Navy medical board immediately moved to strip him of his uniform, declaring his career dead. But, Carl Brashear refused to accept their low expectations. He looked at his mangled leg, realized it was holding his active duty status hostage, and ordered doctors to amputate it.

[00:01:30][music] He then engineered a superhuman rehab regimen in total secrecy to prove to a skeptical naval board that an amputee could survive the crushing pressure of the deep sea. Carl strapped on a primitive heavy canvas diving suit weighing over 200 lb, and walked deep sea tracks until blood soaked through his prosthetic leg. The system ran out of excuses. In 1970, Carl Brashear broke the ultimate ceiling, becoming the first black man and the single first amputee in naval history to achieve the absolute highest rank of master diver.
