[00:00:09]And a good Tuesday evening, Mid-Michigan. Chief Meteorologist Chris Eastlick with your nightly forecast update. And it appears that we've got a pretty nice night ahead of us, but we do have some cloud cover here and there.

[00:00:22]That cloud cover is certainly a little bit worse the further south in the viewing area you go, but we do have what appears to be some higher level clouds in the upper parts of the atmosphere that are giving us a pretty nice sunset in certain parts of the region. So, definitely check that out if there's a little daylight out your window still, you might get some pretty good colors there.

[00:00:43]But overall, it does seem like we've got the rain that's on its way out of the Great Lakes region, at least the western Great Lakes, and moving over into places like Lake Ontario and also Lake Erie.

[00:00:56]As far as the rain that is currently being pictured over the Genesee and Lapeer County area, did just check our observation map here.

[00:01:06]I think a lot of that is unfortunately aloft, and so the radar's kind of playing a trick on us in that region. I'm not seeing anything being detected at some of the ground observation sites.

[00:01:16]So, I'm guessing that's a lot of high-level moisture that's tied up in the cloud, and so I wouldn't really have any major rain concerns for us tonight.

[00:01:25]Good evening, Linda, joining the stream.

[00:01:27]Missed the warm temperatures today. It wasn't too bad, but you Yeah, certainly cooler than yesterday. Did see a few locations touch the low 60s a little bit earlier on this afternoon.

[00:01:36]Certainly wasn't everybody, and definitely wasn't as many as we've had lately, but certainly looks like it was a day that could have been a lot worse, of course.

[00:01:46]As far as the forecast goes here, as we move through the next several days, would expect to get a little bit cooler temperature-wise uh tomorrow, uh taking an additional step back from today.

[00:01:58]Seems like we'll be around the middle 50s for most of our high temperatures, and that's after starting the day that uh will be primarily in the 30s. We've got some frost uh concerns again tonight. It's not for everybody, and I want to show you a couple of maps together. The first that I'm going to show you uh is going back to the Sky Tracker, and I have a purpose for that uh because you'll notice the cloud cover's a little thicker down here compared to some of our northern counties this afternoon. And that's going to continue to be the case here for much of the next several hours, and so our northern counties will have the chance to drop off uh into the lower 30s a little bit faster tonight or even the mid-30s where areas like Owosso, Flint, and uh also Lapeer and Sandusky.

[00:02:43]These are the areas that are still under a healthy amount of cloud cover right now uh that will likely take a bit longer to drop and may not even do so uh into a temperature category where frost is possible. Now, keep in mind you might be saying, "Well, how many people actually could have frost possible?" There's a lot of temperatures above freezing tonight even off to the north. A lot of the temperatures that we sense are um a couple meters off the ground. And so, for you know, 2-m temperatures, which is the standard, you're talking about roughly 6 6 and 1/2 ft uh off the ground. And so, what happens is your ground temperature, as that air from the heat of the day starts to go back up in space, your temperature at ground level is actually cooler um than some of the observed temperatures that we will see. So, that's how frost can still happen even if overnight lows are still projected to be above freezing.

[00:03:35]So, if you've ever wondered that, that's the case.

[00:03:37]Um I'll go to the frost and freeze map so you can actually see that tonight.

[00:03:42]Uh we do have uh freeze warnings to the north. So, Roscommon, Ogemaw, Iosco, those are the counties that have the best chance to fall uh near freezing or a little bit below. Clare County as well. Uh we also have frost advisories in Isabella, Gladwin almost said Gratiot, Isabella, Gladwin, and also Arenac County. So, Standish and Gladwin included under those as well. Uh more of a patchy threat if any in these areas that are not included, I would say I wouldn't be shocked to see some frost in northern Midland and northern Bay County. Um so, if you live in that area north of 10, um you know, maybe take some precautions tonight or uh if you really got some good investment into some of those areas, um I would just take precautions anyway just to protect your investment. Um but, it doesn't seem like it's quite as big of a chance the further south and the east you go.

[00:04:34]Um and right now, the temperature's not falling off too quickly.

[00:04:38]Um we've got mostly middle to upper 40s um around our northwestern zones. Uh we've got mostly lower to middle 50s.

[00:04:45]So, we've still got a ways to go um tonight before we even start thinking about that. So, I do think there's a better threat um going into tomorrow night and uh Thursday morning. Um that seems to be the best chance of the week. Maybe uh doing this all over again on Friday, but I think Wednesday morning and Friday morning are a bit more comparable. And then we get a little bit of a break over the weekends going into Mother's Day weekend, Monday and Tuesday um following that, it seems like we may have a chance to get some frost uh concerns back in the picture. So, uh really just a stubborn weather pattern we're on.

[00:05:23]Um if you take a look at the the 7-day forecast here, um not a lot of hope for significantly above average temperatures, but we've got plenty of 50s uh and 60s. So, at least it's not 40s. Uh certainly could be a lot worse for early May.

[00:05:39]Uh we have definitely um had it worse for early May before.

[00:05:46]Um Sherry, good evening. Nice today when the wind was not blowing. Yeah, another breezy day. Thankfully, not quite as bad as earlier this week on Monday. Monday was definitely windy.

[00:05:55]Um, Charlotte, fast thunderstorm storm for maybe 20 minutes, poured and then went away last night. Yeah, I'm sure um I'm sure that storm made some noise as it came through. If you're talking about that one that came through uh from roughly about Isabella County over through Midland and Bay County.

[00:06:13]Um it seemed like that was the most put together storm we had of the night, but it was a pretty sizable storm.

[00:06:22]Um, so it affected a lot of areas.

[00:06:25]Uh, Hernando asks, Chris, when do you think the weather will stay in the 70s or warmer? I'm going to show you a chart uh here in a moment. Uh, but I just wanted to let that 7-day stand there just so you can get an outlook um a little outlook on the uh the temperatures there into next week.

[00:06:45]And And Mark, you kind of beat me to it.

[00:06:48]Uh, the weather service saying that the second half of May will be near normal temps. I I think that's cool or good um a good call.

[00:06:57]Those were the words that I was looking for.

[00:07:00]I think that's a good call uh because I will show you the graphic right here if I can pull it up our computer um that we we pull up. It's been giving me a little trouble lately. So, let's see if this actually works.

[00:07:16]And so far, it seems like it's going to.

[00:07:18]Uh, but I'm going to describe it um and hopefully hopefully you can actually see it.

[00:07:31]So, work with me on this.

[00:07:33]So, this picture right here these are the dates down at the bottom if you see that. So, I'm probably going to have to talk you through it because I don't think you can see it, but this is May 11th right here.

[00:07:47]And if you look up, notice we've got a lot of blue.

[00:07:51]And so what that means is this blue means the European model, which is what I'm looking at right now, thinks that a lot of these cooler temperatures will stick around at least into next week, which is what our 7-day forecasts projects.

[00:08:08]But what you can notice on this map of all these little squares that are different colors is you try to look for what color is dominant. And so you see these blue temperatures here. Those indicate we've got a lot of air around the 50s. Uh we've got air that's in the 30s at night. Uh but what you're seeing over here is you're starting to see more orange pop up.

[00:08:35]And that orange is starting to get more consistent in this area right here.

[00:08:43]And so where the orange really starts to take hold is roughly about the middle part of the month and the late part of the month, right here. So this is May 31st right about here.

[00:08:57]Where my arrow is. Hopefully you can see that. So I'm going to put it up in the white section so you can actually see that. That's May 31st if you go straight down.

[00:09:06]And so for pretty much the second half of the month, if you can see my mouse circling, we've got a lot more colors in there that are favorable for >> [snorts] >> what appears to be above average temperatures or closer to about the 60s and 70s. So I know that was tough to see, but I think it'll give you at least a little bit of hope um that we will get there. Yeah, it's probably not as fast as many would like, uh but we are working our way towards it. And uh as Samantha has said in the chat, good to see our northern Michigan uh viewer.

[00:09:47]Um says the sun is setting later and days are getting longer. And absolutely, we're creeping our way towards 9:00 here before you know it. And so that is uh that is going to help us out, too. But a pretty quiet weather pattern overall.

[00:10:00]Thursday and Friday, we've got a chance for a few showers. There's really not even much to show you for Thursday and Friday.

[00:10:06]Um going into the weekend, I think Saturday's the better chance um over the weekend for some rain, not as much Mother's Day.

[00:10:16]Um but models have been kind of all over the place when it comes to rain chances.

[00:10:21]There's not a lot of real clear signals um as to what days and times are going to be um the most likely. Uh but I would say Saturday, if there were a time period that's a little more likely than others, I think Saturday uh especially afternoon into Saturday night could be a more likely scenario. Um I think that'll iron itself out towards the end of the week. There appears to be a front coming through on Saturday, and that's why I think there should be uh a little bit more likelihood with that.

[00:10:55]There's a little more organization there.

[00:10:57]Um and then going into uh Mother's Day, I don't think Mother's Day will will be washed out by any stretch. Monday looks fairly dry for now.

[00:11:05]And then uh perhaps a few showers going into Tuesday. So, I don't see really any major heavy rains on the horizon. Let me see if I can look at the rainfall forecast really quick.

[00:11:16]And let's just see if we can take that out all the way maybe into next week. Let's just go all the way through next Tuesday.

[00:11:27]And yeah, I mean, for all of these rain chances from tomorrow through Tuesday.

[00:11:33]It's projecting us at less than a half an inch for the entire area. In most of the areas at a quarter of an inch or less.

[00:11:41]So, for those hoping to get a break from the rain, if you've been soaked so far this month, um I think you're in okay shape. I don't think you'll see a ton the next several days. If you're hoping for meaningful rain to get rid of some of those burn bands, you may not be quite as lucky.

[00:11:59]Um so, there is a bit of a trade-off there.

[00:12:15]Uh Mark talking about the storms from last night, pretty incredible.

[00:12:20]Um the fires, too, we had yesterday due to the low humidity. Yeah, and if anyone's wondering how we can have fire danger with um all of the wetness we've had through the spring.

[00:12:31]It's just those dry fuels on top, pine needles, um things like that, dead leaves. I I even still have some dead leaves in a few pockets of my yard. Um I've picked most of them up, but they're just, you know, those stubborn little piles that are tough to get to.

[00:12:46]Um or things that are uh stuck in landscaping that I haven't had a chance to really uh fully clean up yet. Um so, it's it's stuff like that.

[00:12:56]So, if if it's still in my yard, and I've put effort into pick some of it up, you can imagine that it's still out there in the forest, too. Um so, now that the snow has melted and and everything like that, you know, you get a lot of that stuff on top, and all it takes is, you know, maybe a lightning strike, maybe a downed power line, something like that, and you combine the winds that we had on Monday, and all of a sudden a fire is kind of out of control. Uh so, that's how we can get that.

[00:13:23]So, anyway, um that is the stream for tonight. I don't really have uh too much more. Yeah, Samantha, biodegradable stuff.

[00:13:31]Um I don't really have too much more on that, but uh we'll have another round, I think, of frost and freeze alerts uh to go over again tomorrow.

[00:13:39]Uh we'll see what's new with any rain chances towards Thursday and Friday tomorrow, and then uh we'll see what else we can find in this forecast.
