This video analyzes Invader Zim's Season 2 episode 'Backseat Drivers From Beyond The Stars,' demonstrating key animation techniques including smear frames for fluid motion, character head recycling to save time, gradient backgrounds for depth, and thick outlines for visual impact. The hosts discuss how Zim's character design evolved to become more refined and 'buggy,' with attention to details like antenna physics, eye expressions, and hand movements. They also cover cultural references in the episode, including the 'Hey Listen' meme from Legend of Zelda and the Centipede game, while explaining how the show uses flat shots and camera angles to create comedic and dramatic moments.

SWOLLEN EYEBALL STUDIES: The Case of "Backseat Drivers From Beyond The Stars" Invader Zim Analysis
Added:Introduction and welcome to a reborn session of the swollen eyeball studies, the award-winning series where we take control of the massive and talk way too much. I am your host, Tallest Flamo, here today with my fellow talists, including my stellar co-host, Lady Zeno.
>> Greetings.
Flamro is running the ship now and I couldn't be more proud of them.
>> Ah, we swap places and tallest Ka or Space.
>> Hello humans.
It's blue.
>> We also have in our audience council Invader Azora, Kitty Nom, Micer, and Riverina.
All right, so uh we skipped to season 2.
What do you know? and we're going to be looking at the one of the most cinematic episodes of the entire series. In fact, it's um a favorite among the fandom and cast and crew. Fun fact, this is Jonah's favorite episode. I think he said this was the epitome of everything good and what went right in the show. And it's season two, which by God, we need. The whole point of this series was to go over the art style and animation, and now we actually have something we can accurately reference. So, let's get into it. All right.
If you reference any episode for how to make the show, make it this one.
>> Yo, it kind of looks like Jupiter, not going to lie.
>> It kind of does. It's just like >> it might be a star, though.
>> Okay, so apparently it is possible to have um the title text more towards the top of the screen. I was wondering about that a while ago. Like, do they ever have it at the top of the screen? Yes, they do.
>> Oh my god, Zim.
>> That's also a good reference um for our CG team. They needed a reference for a moon. That's a moon. And so what happened here apparently um Richard was told to just give them a few my talis.
Malis my talis. And so Richard just kept going waiting for Jonahan to stop him and Jonan was waiting for Richard to stop. And so the whole 45se secondond clip ended up being used >> and it created like one of the funniest moments for Zen.
>> It just keeps going.
>> [screaming] [laughter] >> All right, here we go. Here comes season two characters.
>> Round of the massive if you need to draw that.
>> Oh yeah, >> look at him.
>> Navigators.
>> Season two Zim. Oh my god, that's amazing. You can notice right here, for some reason the shadow of their head is outlined. Uh, don't do that. That's We don't do that here.
Look at these smear frames. He has six arms. That's how you kind of draw smear frames.
>> Navigator. The light kind of looks like it's coming from below them.
>> Is it like a screen? I think it's a screen.
>> Yeah, it's kind of an odd thing to do.
You don't usually see that on the navs.
>> Yeah.
I think they um just kind of recycled um Zim's head. They just kind of like took it and rotated it.
>> Yeah. classic uh like needing to save time as an animator move.
>> This definitely helps me because okay, thank god I don't have to redraw Zim's head like three times.
>> So when tilting a character's head, you can just copy it.
>> Unless you're like really animating them. But if you're just doing like subtle movements, then absolutely just just move the head. Save yourself time.
>> Yes. And here's the tallest. Look at that.
>> My tallest. my tallest.
Um I've been having someone who is working on animations for um the scene with the tallest and squishy >> and so they'll be looking at the recording for this. This will help them a lot.
>> There's a lot of settling frames here.
Like there's very few like going up and it's mostly going down for this one.
I don't know why. I think like the O shape that the tallest make with their mouths is pretty funny.
>> It is funny. Like why are they pogging?
Hold on. I think is their mouth switch on one.
>> Yes.
>> Sim.
>> They just took that and moved it back and forth for the shaking.
>> That's what That's Nemo [laughter] right there.
>> That's the girl's head. The Gur's head is like the perfect shape just like Ka's profile pick that >> I'm saying like that's like a kaya girl.
>> Well, let's see him pop in. It's really cute. He gets cute.
All right. And boop. Comes up and then settles down. Two frames >> traveling closer to the earth.
>> Oh, look at that. That's a great shot.
What room is this?
>> Nice perspective on the screen. This is the This is the cockpit, isn't it?
>> I think that's the That's the room that we're drawing. I know the >> Oh [ __ ] We've been drawing it wrong.
>> We've been making this room all along.
>> Oh my god. Okay. Well, yeah, we do need them redrawn then. Jesus. Yeah, it's a lot more purple.
>> I didn't even realize there's navigators overhead. Like if you go to the last shot, there's like an upper uh layer of navigators like on a separate floor from the main floor.
>> Like see. Yeah, you got him up there.
There's like a little shelf of them.
>> Zim is so nerdy diversion about them.
I'm crying.
>> He is. He literally got put on trial for being too autistic. Let's look at his eyes popping. They do that a lot. Yeah.
>> Yeah. I like the way the eyes move a lot. The way they're shaped as uh they're closed. that you get those nice um I don't know like that nice like sharp look I guess.
>> Indeed. And like it pops out and there's two settling frames.
So they pay a lot more attention on like kind of smaller details it seems.
>> See like look at this room and we haven't been drawing it this way.
And also like >> I think I love it.
>> I It's like it's like magenta >> and the overhead navs. That's a cool detail. It's so cool. And like you can see, look at all these gradients. I keep telling people, for the love of God, when you're drawing backgrounds, use gradients. And like the >> gradients are your best friend with Zim backgrounds.
>> Oh yeah. And like these um these little line details on the walls, they're a lot more um they're a lot thicker than I've seen them usually be drawn. It's interesting. If uh anyone wonders why we skipped straight to season two after getting halfway through season 1, um it's because we have been drawing this room the whole time and we desperately need the reference.
>> We've been doing it wrong.
>> We are drawing this exact style in this exact setting. So >> yeah, we looked at like purple head nodding. Yeah, they they're just recycling the frame. I've been the way I've been doing I've just been redrawing the head the whole time cuz I thought that made it look more Invader Zim. But yeah, you can just can just move it.
>> Look, the animation was on a budget.
[laughter] >> Oh yeah, >> that's amazing. But it was on a budget.
>> Especially the Christmas episode, but we'll get to that.
>> We'll get to that.
>> Oh my god, Zim. Look at his eyes. Like on his head for like >> like Zim closing his eyes >> and that antenna shape is beautiful. Oh my god. Don't get me started on his antenna. It's so nice. And you can notice here especially like they they pay most attention to the outlines on the heads. You can see on the tallest too and like maybe like the little part of um the torso. Like the heads are what stand out more. Look at these outlines.
Thick outlines.
Here's him laughing.
So yeah, they I think they did redraw his head a little bit, but not much effort went into it, but it works.
>> I sure am. Anyhow, since you're so nearby.
>> Wait, why? Hold up.
They had him take his arm out and then move it back up.
>> Got like a line under his like O mouth.
>> He's got a lip.
He has a little bit of a lip.
>> You can see his uh hand follows the arc of the movement. That's very important because it makes the movement seem a lot more smooth.
>> Very nice.
>> Look at the way his uh his Oh my gosh, the uh the stretching and then the Yeah, the overshoot and the settling is really nice there. Oh yeah, his head gets long and thin and then it settles back into its model shape.
>> His teeth are like We don't draw his teeth like that normally, but then it like Oh my, he gains teeth and then he loses them. Like >> what?
>> Yeah, there's three settling frames.
Boom. Teeth are fixed.
Like, >> wow, >> that's that's weird.
>> Oh, that's on ones. These two frames are on one. These three frames are on ones.
It's interesting.
>> Oh my gosh, he's got like the the Zim hands where he does like the >> the little like the little clawing.
>> Yeah, I love when he does that. It's so cute.
>> These are really good Zim hands, by the way. Like ah, very nice.
>> A, you made sandwiches. See, that's like that's like a kaazoo. It's like a Kaazoo.
>> This is absolutely a kaya.
>> Yay.
>> Oh my god. his eyes. A >> a they're so bug. Oh god, he's just drawn so well.
>> Also note that the navigator in front is blurred because uh camera focusing.
>> Yes, they do that a lot in Zim. Like you can see like the screen up here too.
It's a little extra detail. Add some depth.
>> Here's his antenna being forward facing.
Some antenny physics there.
Oh yeah, I keep forgetting like the antenna actually have proper physics and it's not just something that fan artists made up.
>> Yeah, they can move up. They just don't do it as much.
>> Oh my god, this mouth. Jesus Christ.
[laughter] >> He's got like the peashooter mouth.
>> You don't need to You don't need that wrinkle. Why is that there? You don't need >> You only need a wrinkle if it's uh extending fully off. Yeah.
>> Jesus.
>> That made it worse.
>> That made it worse.
>> He doesn't have one. He doesn't need one.
>> And here's an example I uh sent in like a way previous meeting way back when, like August. Like, yes, the tallest antenny can perk up.
>> Oh, he's got his Yeah. perked up antenna for his excitement. He looks like puppet.
>> It's like relapse into the beak.
>> This is the purple that everyone yearns for.
>> Yeah, he's happy.
>> Says there was a coloring error with the navigator.
>> Oh yeah. [laughter] Oh. Oh my god. No.
>> Why is he green? [gasps] >> That's so so green.
>> How do you make that? The shading is there too. Like what? You put in the effort to shade it as well. Let's [laughter] You don't see the other guy right there?
>> Why is he different?
>> It's just like, oh, look at him. They're happy.
>> Oh, look. They're happy.
>> Oh, look. He's happy. They just kind of like move them. They don't like redraw them or anything.
That could be a good like server emoji.
I can like cut this out like, "Hey, here's Red being all jolly."
>> Make it like separate emojis for people to like respond to each other.
I'd have to like edit this guy out. This isn't about him.
>> Yeah, this isn't about him. But thankfully, you can draw the STYLE SO WELL. YES, >> it's the It's the image that everyone loves.
>> The It's the bug moment of all time. I think you should just let this moment like speak for itself before you say anything.
>> A It's so cute. Like I >> was so bug. Like oh like I use this moment a lot when explaining like Zim is so ADHD cuz like >> I've done stuff like this.
>> Like I love when he's drawn without a mouth. Like it's just >> he's so neurody divergent. He's like you know like the like the perfect duck.
That one duck that's like perfectly white and smooth. Uh this is like the perfect Zim. And Vader is Zora says proof Zim is a bug. Micer says this is a very patient Zim. He's a very patient bug. Green boots.
>> Very patient bug.
>> Like look how long his antenny tips are.
Like I I keep having to tell people like dude if you're drawing season 2 Zim.
Look at these intennies.
>> Oh, they're stupid long. Even when he's a meat in the concept art for the trial, they are stupid long. That is just an art style thing.
>> And like you can see this is a good head shape. I feel like like this is like it's doesn't hurt my eyes.
>> Great head shape. Nice and angular.
>> It's true. It's true.
A look at him.
>> There's a bug on the bug and the bug swaps the bug and the shadow does not match the bug.
>> Like the antenny are they we've relapsed to season one antenny and the shadow just isn't there. I think they meant to add a shadow but forgot.
>> Hey, they did cut the transmission.
What?
>> Hey, they did what? No, >> don't say that. Zim, >> they didn't um they didn't take Zim like raising his arm too seriously. Just like boom boom boom like no ease in or ease out. It's just too comedic action. So, I don't think they needed to like >> Yeah, make it flat like a flat shot.
>> Well, I want to call this flat, but still.
>> Well, it's like there's no like fancy like ease in, ease out. That's kind of what I mean.
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Like the animation's flating.
>> Don't Why? [laughter] >> This is This would be a good Zim turnaround if we didn't have that.
>> But like this is a very subtle uh Zim turnaround. Like you can see where you would draw his.
>> I wonder what that turkeyy's there for.
>> Oh man. I I have no idea.
>> Oh wow.
This is on once.
Wow. This is on once. There's a lot of frame. There's a lot of inbetweens and it's on once.
>> This is kind of what I do for like maximum suckage almost.
>> Invader Azora says, "I love how I can barely hear the episode and I know what they're saying."
>> Oh, yeah. I have it on low volume for the recording. I just run into the assumption like, "Okay, we all have the show memorized, right?"
>> Yeah.
Maximum suckage.
Look at that.
>> It makes him look more bug.
>> He's so Look at him. He's so cute.
>> Bug's in his best. That's why we just love season 2 so much. He gets more buggy than he was before.
>> It's true. He's just He gets a little more depth, dare I say. Like as a character, just like as a design, he just gets he gets more refined and like it starts to become what it should be.
>> According to Jonan. Oh, look at this back view.
>> Almost like he's uh coming out of some sort of Urkin Chrysis as >> Oh my god.
>> I'm not gonna say that again.
>> Right. No, we're I got to put that on the Zim wiki. Hold on.
>> Yeah, [laughter] referencing the particular um that's a reference to the uh as of now upcoming comics that uh don't uh that Jonah has nothing to do with. So, they're not canon.
>> They're an overcan. It's a good back view of Zim. Look at that. So nice.
>> Look at this Zim hand. Like the thumbs up. It like he's kind of like Look at that. That's a good Zim hand.
>> Just like shutter something back and forth. If a movement seems too boring, just do like a head nod or like it's especially if it's Zim, just move his hands like that. I don't want to miss that.
>> Oh, his worried face. Nice dark eyes there.
>> Wait. Oh.
>> Oh. Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no.
>> His mouth is going into his neck.
>> Don't do what? Don't. Why is it It's You don't need to. It doesn't line. What? It I Oh, you and sometimes >> the head shape. He's That's like a pin head, Zim.
>> Jesus.
Oh, boy.
It's GR. [screaming] He's going to push the button.
>> Plot twist.
>> Oh my god. I was wondering what that turkey was doing there. I don't want to see this explosion.
It's just a shine and then kablam. Then he jumps up.
His legs get a bit wider and then he lands.
[laughter] >> Oh man. I was wondering what that turkey >> that's such a G moment.
>> It is.
Hold on. Me >> also a good way to shove in like GR into an episode where like you I don't know.
You just want like you want to establish him being there.
>> Yeah. He doesn't have to be there, but he also has to be there.
>> He was turkey the whole time.
>> Yes. So you were.
>> Yes. So you were.
>> He's so dad. He is so dad. Oh my god, this mouth is That's funny.
>> I like that mouth looks like he's out to sing.
[laughter] >> Because Nickelodeon won't won't let Richard sing. That's Oh, that's very sad.
Feel like you could put a little more. I feel like you could do more with his teeth. Like there's kind of It's an in between, but still. these containment levels. I have to go to the >> Oh god, Zip's head is like that's that's faulty. That's kind of faulty.
Oh, look at him. Here's some speed lines.
>> So, here's a rare occurrence of um Zim's body not being like egregiously bigger than his head. How it's supposed to be is uh Zim's head is supposed to be the same height as both his torso and his legs combined. So rare anatomically correct Zim. We've been tortured by season one too long.
>> And G's excited. He loves pain.
>> Well, he also likes destroying.
>> Never forget that Gur loves violence and pain and death.
>> He loves everything. What is this?
That's Oh no. loves everything including Violet. OH, >> BEAK. NO, I thought we were safe.
>> That's for two frames. Gh.
Here's one of the rare times. Uh, the Membrane house has their little um electrical perimeter defense thingyamajiggy.
>> You can see the shading on Membrane's head is, you know, not shaded.
>> Oh god, he looks bolder than usual.
>> He doesn't need to be any boulder.
Oh, I want to see this uh shaking. Like it's like a I think it's like a two steps forward, one step back kind of thing. Like go a little further, go slightly back. Yep. Go further up, go slightly back, go further up, go slightly back.
>> And they also like extend his fingers a little bit just before they curl into a fist.
So they go spread out a little bit and then they clench.
>> That boy >> talking.
>> He's talking.
>> Oh, season two, Gaz, my beloved.
>> I'm a big fan of season 2, Gaz.
>> Also, the way that Membrane picks up his kids, I love so much.
>> The way kids are just picked up in general in this entire show. Oh, [laughter] look at Gaz's head.
>> Pick them up like they're toys. there.
It's not >> angles. Yeah, it's just not circle anymore.
>> She deserves balls.
>> Look at this background. They This is kind of a somewhat unique background, too. They would usually just do like a comicy effect, but this is more This is fancier.
>> A little more uh like effort into it.
>> They did.
Look, >> also remembering being a good dad and encouraging uh his kids to get along.
>> A how nice of him >> despite what the fan base may tell you.
>> That's very nice of him.
>> A look at her. She looks amazing. Like you She's got like the hair and so well.
>> She's got the hands. She's got them like Zim scheming hands.
>> I have a hypothesis. I'm just kidding.
And no, >> don't let the Zim wiki hear about this.
Love the point on the dress. Um, Kitty Nom says, "Oh, yeah, me too. That's so cute."
>> Yeah. Yeah. It's more like triangular.
Actually, no. No. I I should say it's like more of a pyramid shape, actually.
The uh >> It's kind of >> Yeah, the points and then you got like the two angles. Wow.
>> It's kind of vampirelike almost.
>> It's very vampire like. I like the vampire look for Gaz. It It suits her.
>> I know it does, honey.
Your legs are swaying. They just go limp. He >> picks up his kids like how you would pick up like a hamster.
>> What's the difference?
>> Okay. Not not how you should pick up a hamster, but how like kids pick up hamsters.
>> How you could pick up a hamster, but it doesn't mean you should.
>> It does.
>> This is such a good gad. Look at that.
Like you got like the head and like it t it um tilts in. That's so nice. And forehead. Forehead. Good.
We love it when the characters have a five head on the show. OH MY GOD. OH, season two. Dip. He's less ugly.
>> Yay.
>> According to Shonen though, Dib's always ugly.
>> He looks nicer now. LIKE LOOK, WE GOT IT. We finally have it. Look at that.
>> Beautiful.
>> It's It's glorious.
>> The bevels.
>> They did.
>> I call it bevels.
>> The Brian Kitko bevel.
two settling frames and then it goes >> to dissect it. Have to remove things.
>> What is he on about?
>> Falling glasses are so like they're so him, >> right? They don't do that much. They don't they don't even they do something similar in the theme song, but >> um yeah, I guess like Dib has to earn them. This is the season 2 premiere, so you know, he'll get more aura and more though.
>> But oh my god, his head shape. It's It's just better.
>> What is bro yapping about?
>> I don't think he knows either. Okay, so when it comes to Dib closing his eyes, um, at Fan Expo Anaheim, I literally marched my ass to Jonah's table and ask, "How do you draw Dib's eyes when they're closed in the series art style, specifically season 2?" And he's like, "The original show, like, oh, that old thing." Um, but he did I did get an I did kind of get an answer. So, he said he always thought it looked weird when they were drawn like this with the pupil inside the glasses.
>> Never looked good to me when the eye closed, but the glasses stayed wide.
Nothing looks good to me. Honestly, I'm telling you right now, his eyes are weird. Doesn't look good.
>> He looks good sometimes.
>> So, I guess just don't do it like this.
just do it the other way where you just close the entire glasses. He says like he always looks weird. He he was kind of they were trying still trying to figure out how to do it, but both ways look weird, but I guess lean more towards cleaning closing the whole glasses.
>> Oh, here's a good angle of Zim's house.
Very nice. Nice and >> forenot.
I'll need this for a reference, man.
>> Oh yeah, >> you remember.
>> I love this change in pace.
>> Here's a nice uh Oh, yeah. Here's a good example of like if you need to insert a scene that didn't happen cuz uh they say this happened during Tac the Hideous New Girl, which we will cover eventually.
Anyway, um but in that episode, this event was not shown, so they just kind of like made this up.
>> Let's go back there for a second.
>> HEY, LOOK AT THAT GARBAGE CAN.
>> HEY, LOOK, a nice splat shot for comedy.
>> Oh my god, I love that so much. It's so funny.
>> Yes, it's quite impressive that can.
>> Yes, it is rather impressive that can.
>> No beak mouth relapse.
He's very boxy here.
>> This was technically in season one.
>> You're going by timeline, >> right?
>> No, the the actual art style change was something they experienced like from season one to season two.
>> You know how squishy blew up? Um, a tinier squishy blew up, but you never heard about it cuz it was so small that nobody noticed. Here's in live time this little back angle of Zim's head forming.
Like he turns his head a little bit.
See, now it's there.
He just kind of protrudes out.
That's a good dip. Look at this. You see this? Do this.
>> Great.
>> Wait, he kind of scurryed over to his little computer.
Oh, this is a good turnaround of like Dib's head.
That's so nice. The secondary action of the coat. Look at that. That's so nice.
>> Bug.
He's bug. He's so bug.
>> He's just walking. Where is Bro going?
>> Look at this lighting. Oh, that is nice lighting. Like even with like the eyebrows. This is really good for like a dramatic shots especially like if like D is D is scheming here. And so you can see like the light coming from the computer monitor. That's good lighting.
>> It doesn't fly yet.
>> That was fast. Was that on once?
>> Oh.
Oh no. That's just sad.
Very unfortunate. His ears just so big.
Oh my god.
>> Now he's looking at us. What did we do?
He's looking at us like we did.
>> Okay, fourth wall break.
>> Big ears.
>> Broken hair colors.
Why is this here?
A wait.
Oh, look at look at that. Look how long her arms are. That's good exaggeration.
It worked well with this pose.
>> You could always cheat the arms.
>> Nothing wrong with cheating the arms.
>> It is midnight on the button. Very nice.
This lighting, too. Wow.
>> That's very pretty. I like >> I always liked how the sky was purple.
Oh my god, that dim photo.
>> Is that I don't even know if that's supposed to be him. What is that? I like to think that was like, okay, you know how like some parents frame their kids like uh drawings from school? I like to think that was Dib self-portrait.
>> He had a little bow tie.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Look at his hair site. Look at D's like hair.
>> Well, we saw the way Dib draws in Dark Harvest. He's not like a like a amazing artist. I mean to be fair like the characters are already very simpl simplified >> is a failed dib clone.
>> A failed dip. Yeah, it's Uncle Tib.
>> It's him. It's Pilot Dib.
>> Everyone who subscribes to Pilot Dib is a failed Dib iteration theory.
>> And by that I mean just the people in my Tomodachi live. Oh my god, the way Zim jumps into his chair.
>> Oh my god. Frame by frame.
>> Oh yeah. Oh, that's like that's like me.
That's me about to get into Minecraft.
>> Computer. That's so nice.
He starts out facing the chair and then he just boom turns right back around.
This is on ones, by the way. This these frames, these are on ones. Then now it's back on twos. This is on once. The settling's on once.
Look how the antenna just kind of they deflat.
And I saw on the animatic version uh the scene with Zim going he was sitting in the chair. He was sitting in the chair all relaxed facing away from the monitor only for him to turn back around. I like how they just had him like do it off screen and then leap in.
>> Oh, look at that UI. It looks just like the screen from the intro. I mean, Urkins do use Windows, >> you know. Urkins, they got some like fancy theming. No minimalism there.
>> Oh, yeah. I I envy that.
This is a good dip head. Look at this.
Look at this. So nice.
Whoa, that was very fast. They just like take it and zoom out.
>> Right house, by the way.
>> Oh, yeah. It's the It's the back. put in their garage which poses like that for some reason.
>> I [gasps] I'm not going to ask questions anymore.
There's also this funny overhang. That's interesting.
We got Urkin letters that the fandom does not use.
>> Dibs learning the universe lore and world building like this is why I love this show.
>> Yeah, remember planet Vort all the way from episode one. It's important now.
It's not just the home of the universe's most comfortable couch.
>> Look at this.
>> It was their greatest allies home, but then they betrayed them.
>> Yeah, they just they just now decide to bring that up. Like, thanks.
This isn't even a floor. That's how dark it is. And you can see the gray outlines that's used. If you um have like a black background, just make the outlines gray.
Detailed control schematics for the mass.
>> This is a good zoom.
>> Oh my god, that's a good zoom. Look at him.
>> Remote command chair.
>> Oh my god. 777.
>> Wait, I think I saw it.
>> Fun fact, has his kids held captive, but that's uh canon according to the comics.
Also, wow, >> that's true. Yes, he does have his children imprisoned and can make them go extinct by the press of a button. He just has them.
>> The tallest command.
>> Here's 777.
>> Look at this background. Look at that.
>> That would be wrong.
>> That would be wrong.
>> I love how sarcastic he is.
>> Yeah.
>> Dramatic irony.
>> Oh, his beautiful horns.
>> Look at that. Like they they don't move his mouth with the shaking head. That's kind of weird.
Oh my god, look at him.
>> The background changes color every shot.
That's so weird. See this arm movement?
>> Pretty simple here.
>> Boing boing boing boing.
>> There you go.
>> Still on twos.
>> With this.
Here's a good shot of Zim's head being slightly tilted down if anyone if anyone has trouble with that.
>> Oh my god, the way Zim laughs here. The animation is like >> they they went absurdly [laughter] >> like smooth with it.
>> You also know >> my genius >> relapse.
>> Oh god. Whenever Zim like absolutely uh like relishes in his villain. Love it. I love it, too. Oh my god, it's amazing.
[laughter] >> Look how his mouth moves there. It like Yeah, it has some bounce to it.
>> It's like plastic when it usually isn't.
>> Yeah, I've said before Urkin heads are very malleable.
>> Yeah, they have chubby cheeks. Don't know [laughter] [screaming] what's I like this arc with the arm movement.
Very important. Like have the hand follow it. It makes it look uh very nice.
>> I said I was sorry.
>> It just launches himself.
Dib is so dramatic. You know, he likes to act like Zim is ridiculous, but like look at Dib. He He's campy, too.
>> They're like They're just the same guy, but in different fonts.
>> Or according to both good guys on different sides.
>> It's true. He has a solar system poster.
Okay. And is this a calendar? Bacon.
Okay.
>> Yeah, bacon.
And here we go.
>> Oh my god, the hair spike. [laughter] >> He He slides out. It did not bother trying him.
>> I mean, why would you? That makes him It just It keeps going.
>> Oh my god. Yeah. Then he latches on, spins around. Yay.
>> He's so happy.
>> He's so happy. He's having a good time.
Oh, look at that coat. It just gets bigger when like Bill's behind him.
A >> dramatic background again. There's >> Oh, yeah. We do this kind of background in squishy during the prepare the cute ray. That part. This is the kind we would do.
>> Yeah.
>> One of my favorite backgrounds because they take like a minute to draw.
>> Oh, this is nice.
just like imagining his whole like 360 background >> shot. Wow. You don't see a whole lot of POV shots in the series. This is great.
And he's about to go right into the garage. [laughter] >> He's fine. Oh, here's a little >> family guy. Uh oh, yeah. Impact is our family guy. Death. Uh >> he slides back too.
his leg. [laughter] See, look at these boots.
He's got boots.
>> Those are great boots.
>> Those are great boots. They should make more boots like those. A Oh, top shot of Dib. That'll be helpful. See, look at that. He's just They're just cubes. I've went over this before. If you look at like Dib's head, Zim's head, it's just like a It's just a cube with extra steps. So, look at that. You can kind of see the bevel, but like not that much.
You don't need to draw the mouth for this. Like if you ever use Blender, you know, you start with the default Blender cube and like you can add more uh you can bevel that.
>> Yeah.
>> Just imagine like that. You ever use Blender?
>> This is a good dib. Ah, look at that.
I've been waiting for this.
Just feeling the >> back ship. We also need that. Take notes, everyone who's working on dib scenes.
Oh my god, look at him. He's so tiny.
Here's a sky shot. The clouds are completely black, but the night sky is purple.
And also, um, this applies to even space shots. If you're drawing stars, clusters, like cluster them up, like turn down the opacity on your brush, just speckle them everywhere.
Oh my god, THIS IS PERFECT.
>> That's great reference. Look, there's the window that we need.
>> Oh my god, why haven't we been using backseat drivers? Jesus.
>> Yeah, why haven't we been using backseat drivers? What's wrong with us?
>> Well, it's it's okay. We're redrawing it, so everything's fine in this world.
>> Try harder next time. I'm just joking.
>> You should have tried harder. Like, look at this serious like lighting gradient.
Oh yeah, that gradient is coming off of the second floor. And the donuts >> Why is this so like >> Wait, how >> is this on once?
>> They got the invader uh symbol on those donuts.
>> Is either it's like a sizzler thing or >> promotion? Oh yeah, it can also be Yeah, there's got to be like some like accidental uh connection with like the food industry and the invaders because like um you'll see in um Fry Cook invaders have an invader discount.
That's a canon thing.
>> That's so nice background detail. But yeah, >> also can we just like talk about like why is this of all things animated so smoothly?
This is on once.
Why is this so smooth?
>> Oh, uh, Vermin says Kaa did. Kaa sent me backseat uh, screenshots for my massive interior shot line art.
>> Yeah, we got to do these like colors more.
This is on ones. Why is this so smooth?
They could have spent this on the Christmas episode.
Oh, they're so hungry even though they don't need to eat. Oh, look at the window. Okay, interesting how the window has scan lines. I never would have guessed that.
>> It's It's I'm guessing it's like one of those like um you know how like >> I'm guessing it's not really like a window. It's literally just like a like camera footage.
>> Yeah, it's like um like rear view cameras on cars except it's the front.
>> Yeah, >> it can be turned into a screen, as we've already seen.
>> This room might be deeper inside >> maybe >> than we we interpreted. Oh god. Yes, [laughter] >> they got the donut.
>> I love that shot. Look at that. These donuts look so flavorless though. Like they're just those are bagels. Those are neurotypical >> donuts. Look, they're desperate. Okay.
You know, I imagine the tallest hog all the sugar on that ship.
>> Yeah, >> they want crumbs.
>> Oh, these are good. Tallest. Oh, look at that. They look so good here.
>> Crumpity, but yes, they look amazing here. Like that's some of the best tallest I've ever seen.
>> Like the outlines like scrumptious.
These are all um Aaron Alexovich designs except for that guy. I think >> all the resist my beloved. Um they set them up and they gave him so much aura and then like never use them ever again.
Not even the comics.
>> I mean I think they were going >> I will forgive you if you do literally anything with the resist. Come on.
>> See they reuse like these Urkin UI shots. These are This is Urkin UI.
They're still or they also use Windows.
>> I don't use the same operating system or they're just >> the pukes.
Shook the pukes.
>> Oh my god. All my homies love Shook the Pukes.
>> Oh my god. Lar is so unserious. Love him. Not to be confused in Vader or Lardar, which is an actual canon character.
>> Yeah, there there's two people named Lardar.
>> Oh my god, the abortions have tongues.
cuz I didn't notice that >> they do. And also, fun fact to those who don't know, um he was supposed to have like very like uh reactive and um movable horns, but they just ended up not really doing that much. They look a lot more stiff, but there are shots later on.
>> Sorry about that.
>> Sorry about that.
>> My old fandom sona was an abortion.
>> Who is this diva? Wait, >> this one right here?
>> This guy. I love this guy. I Oh, I know that diva on the right. Um, >> yeah.
>> I haven't paid attention to that one.
>> I was talking about the guy in the middle.
>> This chair is so detailed. And for what?
>> You know what? Vortions have a thing for important chairs.
>> That is true.
>> Apparently, according to the wiki, there's a bloody gur here. But I checked and I didn't see it. I went frame by frame when these when purple says hey that's a what that's a vort ship he doesn't say hey so they're lying but um there is no bloody gur it's supposed to be next to his head apparently but I don't see any of that >> are you telling me flamgo that the wiki lies >> no clearly they're the best place for information in the entire Zim fandom and we should believe everything they say, "No, they suck."
>> Call them and tell them we're going to blow them up. I love quoting that.
>> Yeah. Whenever >> I'm mad at something.
>> Yeah, me too.
>> We're like, "Are we going to blow them up?"
>> See, look at this. This moving shot throughout all the characters. So nice.
>> I got it. Now that's something weed a lot.
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I want see this these guys getting shoved out of the way.
There's so many of these guys. Who are these guys?
>> A look at the little puppets.
>> Oh my god, the puppets.
>> Look, it's so cute.
It's just It's so bug. It's like pilot green antenna. Oh my god. Wait, look at Purple's little teeths. Oh, >> that's so >> I love when they do that. Oh, this is a good red, too. Look at that.
These outlines.
[clears throat] These outlines.
Delicious outines.
>> Expression. Love it.
>> Oh my god.
Literally, please, for the love of God, give them thick outlines. I'll say it 500 times.
>> As if the massive is any better. It's >> Well, clearly. Clearly.
Oh, okay. They just it just what? It just gets rid of the mouth. Okay.
That's a way to transition from a jaw up shot. I I guess >> why do I keep listening to you?
>> I don't know.
>> I don't know.
>> Destroy them.
>> Destroy them. Purple just has no mouth.
>> Yeah, he must scream.
>> I knew you were going to say that.
>> You know me too well.
>> That's a [laughter] Why is this toying out?
>> Yeah, why is this toying out?
>> Oh, look at this.
>> This UI sequence.
>> That is so cool. Hold up. And like the they put both their fingers together.
They drag it down from the eyes. Like I don't know what magic they're performing, but Oh, it's so nice. It's a great shot for Urkin hands as well up close.
That is so nice.
>> The way they freak out there. Also, uh the way like the tallest and the navigators laugh. They're all in on it.
>> I love how the gravity is also just off magically. Like it was on, but now it's not.
just stuffing their faces.
>> Fun fact that Oh, yeah. There's them laughing silently.
>> Yep. They're not allowed to laugh at home.
>> Yeah. Uh the way that that uh blob creature vomit reminded me um that is the same uh mascot that Sizzler uses for food court for Slugorks.
>> Oh yeah. Can we take a second look at Red here?
>> Yeah, the cute tongue. New server emote.
>> Cute tongue. That That is a server emote. Okay. If you showed this to anyone but didn't show the colors, I think everyone would assume that was purple.
>> Yeah, >> red can be silly, too, guys. He's not all serious, >> right?
And purple can be serious. And oh, look at this. Look at this transition. You It's so hard to notice, but once you do, it's like it's a black dot and now it's this.
It's just it passes by so fast you don't even like notice it.
That's a 3D rendered explosion.
In squishy we would do the effects like this in 2D, but that's interesting.
Oh my god, I hate this. Like it they animate Red talking and then to him screaming. It's just like >> Yeah, I don't know what happened there.
Uh, I think they might have been like a mixup in the animation department of which Tales was supposed to be uh speaking.
>> Yeah, that happens in Zim Waffles, too.
So, I've heard. Look at purple. I didn't notice purple. He's just did that.
>> Oh my god.
>> Out of red.
>> They just redraw that. Honestly, the purple with like his entire body in the donuts makes a good emote for when you're just dead.
>> Yep.
This is a great reference for the massive. Like we even get like an underside of it. Look at that.
>> Oh, heck yeah. That's great for the CG team.
>> Oh, man. Here we go.
I think they took this from Zim Waffles and just added to it.
Oh my god. So nice.
And that just turns to this, which looks very painful. They redrrew the background. Like, oh my god, that looks so painful. But like it I guess it works.
You can see it's a little jittery, too.
But it's okay. I forgive them.
Oh my god. So nice.
This would also be a good turnaround for Zim.
>> I feel bad for whoever had to animate this. Jesus.
>> But yeah, that is nice.
>> Like Oh, it's such a good shot.
>> I love it so much. Oh, look at his eyes.
>> Yeah, in the lighting.
>> Doesn't sound like he's Chinese.
He's having such a good time. Oh, moon.
Oh, >> more like a Mercury. But yeah.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Oh, wow. That was fast.
>> Be so happy.
>> You'll be so happy.
>> He's so cute.
>> That was really fast.
Oh, yeah. Like >> it's a planet breaking apart for me.
They slam into [laughter] each other.
Oh my god.
Ouch. Says >> Mer.
>> We're defenseless.
Oh, these are good tallest. Look at that. That's so nice.
>> They're trying to go forward again here.
>> You hear that? THEIR WEAPONS ARE DOWN.
What are you doing?
>> WHAT ARE YOU DOING? [screaming] >> OH, YEAH. THIS SCENE THAT ALWAYS gets referenced when people are talking about the differences in Red and Purple's character.
>> That is true.
from the donuts.
>> This I guess this just automatically makes uh red the super serious knows what he's doing one and purple just the soft dumbass. I guess it all took this one shot.
Oh, look at this camera shake, too.
That's nice.
Oh wow, it faded into the screen effect.
I never noticed that. It fade. Look, it faded to like an actual space shot and then they faded on the screen effect. So now it's Zim screen. That's really cool.
Kum says, "I don't like when people make Purple soft. He's cruel, too. Just more of a comedically played character."
Exactly. Actually, I would say like I always say this that purple is actually the meaner of the two. Like he will tell it to you straight if he doesn't like you while red is always the one that kind of like sugarcoats it. Like, oh no, we we have a mission for you, Zim. If only purple was in charge, uh Zim would be dead.
Like to put it like simply, like Red would say like, "Oh, it's just it's, you know, it's uh not that smart." And purple cuts in. It's really [ __ ] stupid. That's how it is.
>> A ship to do that.
>> Look at this Zim. That's so nice.
>> That's so so nice. Ah, wait. Did we relapse to Beak? We relapsed to Beak. Ah.
This dip. That's a good dip. That's a good dip. Ah, I finally feel seen >> the ship to do that. And in case you're wondering, >> in case you're wondering, that's so cool.
They don't They should do They should do this more. Well, they can't do this anymore, but we should do this.
>> Yeah. The uh Oh my god, the reflection in the eyes.
That's so nice.
>> Dib.
>> Oh, look at that.
>> So much venom.
>> He sounds like a slur.
Dib's little yawn.
>> A They did a circular mouth here.
>> Sleepy. Yeah. A >> He's such a boy.
>> I like it as much. Makes him look softer.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, wow. That's cool.
>> Oh god, did I see think I saw a weird frame? Oh god. Thanks, I guess.
Don't it How hard is it to draw Dave's eyes normally? HEY, QUIT IT. LET GO.
IT'S MINE.
>> Was that a circular mouth?
>> That is a circular mouth. You can break that rule.
[screaming] >> Oh, look at all of them. Look at all those bugs.
>> I've seen this image used to uh demonstrate the uh diversity of uh like Urkan eyes. This is This isn't even all the eye colors, by the way. [laughter] >> Yeah, like you got like there's some like amber ones, you know, there's green, there's yellow eyed, greeneyed, even some blue-eyed, which the Phantom thought was impossible for the longest time.
>> That's true.
>> I think so, too.
>> You hear that flam go? They're dead. And we are only halfway through the episode.
I think Wall-E killed like Wall-E begged Jonan to not to kill the tallest and Jonan's like, "No, no, we'll need them later." Then they die again.
>> They don't die for real until Forpus.
>> Yep. Wally got his wish in the end.
>> To be continued. They say as if uh that's going to be a whole other episode.
And we're back.
>> Look at purple hugging his donuts.
Red. What? [laughter] >> Like that. You know what? I don't know why fans didn't use this as evidence for Purple being soft.
>> I know. He's hugging the donuts.
>> He looks so baby.
>> And then Red has an underbite, I guess.
[screaming] They're fine.
>> You hear that? The massive can survive a a freaking star. A yellow star.
>> They flew through the core of a yellow star.
He can wag his He can like wag his tail.
That's funny.
>> Please respond.
>> Why does bro talk like an Instagram guy?
>> Oh my god. Right. Look at him. He's so cute though. He's getting a little toying. Let's go.
>> And yeah, they just took >> they just took like they made like little cells of the navigators and donuts floating and they just tween them up.
>> Like they're not moving.
>> Oh my god, Red's head for like a second there. He was facing forward.
>> Uh oh, let me see.
Oh my god, they It's just like he has like such a huge like chin. It makes him look like a >> Oh my god, Ka.
navigator with his legs out. Oh my god.
>> Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. I was going to point him out.
>> That's a stupid POV.
>> This guy. This guy. [laughter] Oh my god. I was going to point that out. What is that?
>> It's a water bug.
>> Birth out here.
>> It's a water bug.
>> And this guy too.
>> Spider. Thank you, Mer. [laughter] >> Oh my god. Look at him go.
Oh, I want to see him like fly past this. They even put some speed lines.
Oh, that's funny.
>> What is bro yapping about?
Oh my god, this guy's giving birth, too.
What the Oh, [laughter] there's a lot of miracles happening on this ship.
Please do not give birth in VC. That's all have to say.
>> Please do not give birth on the mass. We can't believe we have to say this.
[laughter] >> Get the trouble.
Get the >> by the imposing dark magenta walls. Oh god. I I'm so sorry. Flamgo.
>> [laughter] >> What am I?
>> I guess you're red. Yeah, why not?
>> Oh god. [clears throat] Wasn't that nice?
[laughter] It's coming out.
>> Iard [laughter] voice from the walls.
Squeeze. Squeeze.
This is why they cut out organic birth completely from the Urkin race. This is why they >> they just spontaneously birth and panic.
[laughter] Also, um, new server emote, I guess.
Purple.
[laughter] Oh my god.
Oh, look at these speed lines, too.
I don't even think they had to use them that much, but they did. They're [groaning] extra like that.
>> They are.
>> Oh, here's an example of you can move Zim's eye shines when you want him to clearly be looking at something. He'd looking down so you would have the bigger eye shines facing downward.
>> Great example of that.
>> It's also probably one of the only examples. There aren't too many, but you can do it.
>> My fan art disagrees. [laughter] Look at this six head.
>> Oh my god, >> his head's so big.
>> I said it was.
>> Oh my god. This moment. This moment.
>> Zip is not listening at all.
>> He is shaking with pure praise.
>> That is hatred. That's professional hatred.
>> Oh my god. He is like it's like he's seething just because Oh my god, it's hilarious.
>> Problem with listening to it, [laughter] >> oh look at this D head, too. You can kind of curve it inwards a little bit.
>> Like his fist is still shaking. This is like this is he this is loathing >> bug. This head shape is a little iffy though. Like you don't need it to make it that long.
>> Wait, the way he jumped out.
[laughter] Like he runs.
Well, we got to listen to how he runs.
He makes these little noises.
>> Look at this hallway. This isn't having hallways. It's usually just kind of like taking tubes everywhere.
>> These are one of those tubes. I guess I saw someone on Tumblr compare Zim's like running noises to that of a baby toucan.
[laughter] I think that's very funny.
I'm sure that's how uh Wait. Oh my god.
Oh my god. Oh my god. His mouth on Frank. Go back.
>> Oh no. I mean, I guess, but why is it so low?
Oh, that's bad.
>> God, don't remind me of the robo parents.
>> Oh no, >> that's what they're for. He >> has long antenna.
>> Very long.
Hello. Uh, Meaf.
>> Oh my god. Me. Alleged little brother of Keefe. I still don't know if that's true or not.
>> That could be like another Louis thing.
might have mentioned it in the commentary.
>> They did.
>> Yeah.
>> Is it? Oh, my dad loves this part >> of the mashed potatoes for the first time. I was also like her and muffins.
>> Look at Look at this like lighting shift too. Very nice.
In the shadow. Ooh, they don't. It doesn't have hands. I guess he's a he's a bug.
>> Get up. What are you doing?
>> This like the angry parent. Oh my god, the the lighting on Gur. The way it shifts. That's so good. The potatoes.
>> It's like this is the closest we'll get to a Gur hair flip.
[laughter] >> Wobbles, too.
>> That's a great secondary action as well.
Little antenna wobble.
And yeah, you can see the lighting layer shifts back and forth and back and forth.
>> A potatoes. I like the emphasis on like Gur's um like mouth during that.
>> Oh yeah. Like they animate the hell out of Gur especially. Like this is not Doug or Arthur, whatever. Go full out.
Don't be scared to exaggerate it. We're not here to be scared. paper here to be funny.
>> These outlines outlines.
>> Yes. And muffins.
>> And muffins.
>> And muffins.
>> Now fix the containment levels now.
>> Jesus. Like look at these. Look at >> Never forget that girl loves to cook. I love using that and stuff.
>> Yeah, he cooks and he bakes.
>> It would be nonsensical, but you have a Pinterest. Oh, Zim's worried face. Ah, that's such the outlines. Ah, so bold.
>> Something is happening.
>> Oh my god. Like you can see it like flares out towards the top.
>> The front door. Something horrible.
>> Horrible.
>> We're playing catch with a child.
>> Everyone suck with me on Robo Parents.
Take notes for Robo Parents.
>> That's true. I like how um how like Romance 2 is outlined too.
This mouth. They don't do this mouth very much.
[screaming] Look at that.
>> Exaggerated mouth movement this episode.
>> Oh, thanks. I guess. Thanks. I hate it.
This head shape.
Oh god.
>> He looks like like uh when his forehead's too low. Um he looks lobbomized.
>> He's always loved. What do you mean?
>> He's not lobtomized. He's just neurody diversion.
>> I don't know what you just said.
And here's his little funny little march that doesn't show the legs at all.
Oh, he's so tiny.
And also no mouth him. He has magenta leggings now. Very nice.
Had to do a quick outfit change, I guess.
>> Peek.
It's a great reference to Roma appearance for the kitchen.
>> It's true.
>> Oh my god.
>> Even background characters have outlines too. Like you can see on this guy.
>> He's definitely helping his case. Oh, look at him. He points his toes. Look how elegant that is. He was made for this.
>> Oh boy.
>> He really winds up this like >> Yeah, he he throws him like he's in the Olympics.
>> It's like the perfect like the perfect cast.
>> Okay. When I was directed to have Zim swing Scoo around in uh Squishy, I never knew like what exactly uh that would look like. And now I get it. That's exactly what it should have looked like.
But >> now he's getting kicked.
>> He just gets kicked.
>> Like it's a circular move. It's like the perfect cast from the from Goofy Movie.
And smear frame on the kid too.
And the flip-flop flies into overcan.
Is that on once? A look at him. He's like a praying mantis there.
That was very fast. Fast door slamming.
>> That's bad, son. I guess we haven't taught you well enough.
>> This is a very good robo death toilet.
Oh my god. Such great robo dad.
>> Because Brian boarded this part. That's the whole reason.
>> Oh, Brian beloved.
>> TIME [screaming] TO LEARN YOU A LESSON.
>> Oh my god. This is This frame's unsettling.
>> So that's how he was supposed to hold uh Dinky [laughter] like that.
Look what I got, honey. Our new boy.
>> Our new boy.
>> And rare sighting of Zim with his contacts in, but not his wig.
He's running so funny. Look at Look how much he bounces up when he runs. Like boing boing.
Very fast.
I love this lighting too. So nice.
Part of why this episode hits so hard for a lot of people is cuz like no matter like who you're a fan of, they got good moments. Like we got the resisty, you know, like we got like Zim has great moments. Dib has great moments. Gaz has some great moments.
few moments sadly.
>> Yeah, very unfortunately she has less moments. Um even the robo parents have like good moments like they're rarely used.
>> Yes, my favorite characters are the robo parents.
>> The robo parents. God. Also this coloring error. That's great job. Good job.
And Zim is very disappointed dad here.
Love that.
>> It's like membrane.
>> Uh [laughter] girls playing. Oh my god.
You ever seen that one like video of like the kid playing Roblox and stupid apple?
>> Stupid apple. [laughter] >> Leave me alone.
>> Stupid.
[laughter and gasps] >> Look at him.
>> It's like, "OKAY, GOOD GIRL. GO PLAY WITH THE NEIGHBOR'S KID."
>> THE neighbor's kid. Stupid girl. Stop.
[laughter] Geeked versus locked in.
>> I love G kicking his feet here. Oh, it's so cute.
>> Oh my god, he's gaming so hard. Sudden switch to 2D. Never understood that, but it looks neat.
[laughter] >> It's so funny. It sells the joke more than just being like raging at each other while gaming.
>> Yeah, it's literally playing games with each other with these giant ships.
>> No, that is rude. That is his antenna.
That is not how you pick up a girl.
>> You are giving him nerf damage, Zim.
>> What? Exposed nerve friend that's about to pull.
And here's a really good example of Zim like being a dad to Gur because Gur is mimicking him.
>> Look at that. He's doing the Zim.
>> The way that like Gurr hypes this up is one of like the best like visual gags in the whole series.
>> I know. I love how he just mimics like his hand movements, too. He's It's so father and son coded.
and these baby.
>> I think G being cute, I just think of Ka.
>> Oh yeah, for sure.
Kai's like the CEO of G being cute.
>> Yep.
>> Making the whole world cute.
>> Dib's mouth here.
>> Gray outlines.
They just took a PNG of it, did Oh. Oh, good. Hey, good job. I meant to meant to say closed dibs eyes like this usually lean more towards that because I got it from the man himself. Uh, this is a This is animated weirdly smoothly. And look at that.
Wee.
And you see oh uh no heck >> holy layering issue >> lars >> there's two people named lard >> two of them >> I have a lard now >> no you see that's the invader lardar is actually abortion spy [laughter] >> but that's just a hypothesis a swollen eyeball hypothesis >> yeah I Go home and shave your giant head of your >> just say that [laughter] to people. This is such a good like >> bro mean by that.
>> This is such a good like telling scene of their like dynamic like but like it's also goes the other way around too.
There's >> all kinds of things wrong.
>> I don't think he knows. It's like ADHD talking before you think.
>> Oh yeah yeah yeah. Classic Zim trait.
Always make him uh talk faster than he thinks. Like he doesn't know where he's going when he says stuff until it's too late and then he just doubles down with whatever he said.
>> They're so funny.
[screaming] >> This is also a good zoom from a low angle. Oh, look at his eyes, too.
Come on, LET'S GO PLAY IN THE TOILET.
>> Let's go play in the toilet.
>> I love that >> toilet.
Bugs being lift up a rock. Oh my god.
And pounces.
Lay down a force field. Oh, look at this. Zoom. That's a nice >> monitoring device within the base.
>> Monitoring device.
>> It's pretty fast, too.
>> I love when Zim's like this, too. Like, he's very like confident and like almost smug. I love when he's like that. Also, you don't usually draw his arms bent like this. Uh they use rubber hose. They don't have like joints and neither do human children.
>> Anatomically.
>> What are you doing?
>> Oh, dib outlines. Very nice.
>> Although I probably I probably would have like did like a little extra angle and then did it up, but whatever.
>> Oh, look at that. Wait. Oh, his hands on his hips. Oh, that's so nice. He does a little his little the place the sass.
>> Yes. Oh my god. Look like I love how like his foot placement they just like is he putting his hands >> actual series they don't necessarily pose Zim like a drag queen but you know just saying if when in doubt pose Zim like a drag queen.
>> Exactly. I love to go crazy on Zim's um body language and like his foot placement. He puts his hands behind his back. This is so like villain but also like oh my god flamboyant.
>> Well, fun fact, because of the haze code, a lot of classic villains are just flamboyant by default.
>> It's true.
>> That's film history.
>> Why is this toying out?
>> I like the shading too on his eyes.
That's nice.
>> Get your filthy alien meat out of the cockpit.
>> What the >> my favorite character. Not not hackers.
>> I don't know who's >> I don't know whose favorite uh character is hack ship, but there she is.
>> I've seen some fans.
>> Oh, where's his nose?
Well, no one knows.
>> Oh, this is a good dib right here.
That's nice.
It's like they have I guess those are like key poses. Like they have like one set frame where he's more on model and then they just kind of relapse and then it gets back to on model key frames.
[laughter] >> Oh my god, Zim here. Done. There so many moments in this episode where like he just he's like it's like he's trying out to be like a villain in a stage play [laughter] smear frame. That's great.
>> I've never seen a smear frame like that before in this show. Oh my god.
>> No. Apparently it exists specifically for Dib when he's about to get stabbed.
I guess maybe it's just because like Zim's autistic and this is what he sees villains do in movies. Like, okay, I gotta be super dramatic.
[laughter] >> Yeah, exactly. He's just a movie character. It's like G. G repeats what he hears on TV and Zim does, too. He just has aura.
>> Oh my god, you're so right. That's actually a great like hypothesis. Oh, resist rocks. Uh, Zim is mimicking like what he sees um like villains in TV. Uh, sorry. Like what villains in like Earth media are like.
>> Mhm.
>> That's why he's uh just like that. He wants to spark fear in the humans.
That's great. I never thought about that.
>> And then you see um animation error. The resisting rocks rating is there before they >> that's listed in the wiki. Just thought I pointed out >> it is. I never like actually found it on there until now.
>> Oh, there's a navigator mouth. Look at that. They have mouths.
And I guess their heads are I guess their skulls are hard enough to like break a hole into metal. That's That's great.
>> Holy outlines. Damn.
Oh. Uh, yeah. See, lots of miracles happening today. I can't like I would say their lack of pants is an animation error, but I see it every time.
>> Navigators to quit giving birth in the massive. It's unprofessional.
[laughter] >> I would say the lack of pants is an animation error, but you see it with all of them. They don't wear pants.
Well, actually, Scooja was an animation error, but >> with the they could at least have the nav gears for scors. Like, come on.
>> Yeah, come on, guys.
>> Have some decency.
Power.
>> Are we going to blow him up?
>> Are we going to blow him up? Look at >> says Commander wanted to go commando.
Aliens don't like wearing pants, remember? Oh my god.
>> OH MY GOD. YOU'RE so right. Excuse me.
Aliens don't like wearing pants. Also, look at purple. He's so cute.
>> Cheeks. They're like so >> like a like a chipmunk. Yeah. Blow them up.
>> Yes. When the power into the resist, it'll be their problem.
>> It'll be their problem. This is nice background. Good view of the resist cockpit. Very nice. So detailed.
>> Sir, there's good news and bad. A problem. [screaming] >> A problem.
>> Aside from all these things flying around.
>> Also, look at this space background.
This is like This reminds me of like reminds me of like a Windows background almost.
You see these like these little lines.
See, here's an example of LNAR's horns being all flippity flappity.
>> Yeah, they can move. I always thought they just like took that out and they made them stiff, but good enough.
>> Yeah, them being stiff was more like in they meant to do it, but like Oh no, I guess not. of the bad news.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh my god. Lner here.
>> Horrible one.
>> I I have felt this >> right.
>> I have I have felt that on so many levels. [laughter] >> I feel this too.
>> Oh. Oh, we felt that. We felt that so many times.
>> Oh yeah. All of us. WE'RE GOING TO CRASH.
POV, I CHECK Discord first thing in the morning. Bad idea.
>> Me when I see a Discord notification any anymore nowadays.
>> Oh my god. Wait, actually no. Me checking like Instagram first thing in the morning. Worst.
>> Oh no.
>> I'm traumatized of Discord notifications.
[laughter] >> Scream once again. Lar is so unserious.
A Oh, look at his jittering legs.
>> Yeah, look at that.
>> I remember like back on like the Zim Amino um like people had to like learn how to draw abortion legs. Like it was considered like a right of passage in terms of like drawing skill.
>> Yes. Can you draw abortion legs? This is how you get into Cal.
>> It was hard. It was hard at first, but it did get me good at drawing uh like animal hind legs. So, there you go.
>> I've always I spent my entire life drawing animals. So it it is pretty easy for me. But like you said like as a like a right of passage to draw thank you for your uh application to Ringling College of Art Design.
>> Some artists that were like so nervous about drawing vortions because it's like oh god I have to draw their legs now.
>> This is like they you do the classic artist move of just cropping out the legs. Just waist up shot I guess.
>> Oh my god.
There's a vomiting one. [screaming] No alien thieves are going to steal the secrets of this ship.
>> I also saw on the wiki uh this guy looks like wobblyheaded Bob, which yeah, >> this is the resist insignia. Resist or don't. Very nice. Hear me scum.
scum.
Wait, he jumps up here.
Like, it's almost like these are just like feet, but these are his knees, but now they're just like that.
>> You have not SEEN THE LAST OF THE RESISTING.
>> It's House of Rael. Roll those Rs.
>> That's right. That's still our name.
Look at that. Oh, this is such a good space background. Look at that.
Beautiful.
>> Fly into the pink blob.
>> See, now they have chairs. I guess >> they had chairs out. Oh, yeah. They I guess they just went out and got lawn chairs in between shots.
>> The tallest lounge tallest style shots are ever so slightly inconsistent.
sauce.
>> Oh, look at him. His toying's out.
>> His toy is out.
>> Why is his toying out? They line donuts up on their fingers. That's why they have those fingers so they can line donuts up on them. [screaming] [laughter] That's a That's a science fact.
>> Oh boy.
>> Oh my god. Z was so ready to just crush Dib and Okay, >> wait, wait, wait. Yeah, rewind on that.
Sorry, I didn't get the justice I needed.
>> Okay, hold up.
>> I don't want to watch that. Oh, okay.
>> Another great show of their dynamic.
He's like, "Oh, okay. Wait a minute."
No, like that happened in um >> Sim speaks before he thinks like [laughter] he just has the first like the most natural reaction um before he actually remembers he's supposed to be Zim.
>> Yeah. Like, oh, you know what? Oh, okay.
Wait a minute. I'm supposed to BE A VILLAIN. WAIT, THAT'S SO BAD.
>> He got to do what he says on TV.
>> Like on TV.
He's just poking the ship with a rake.
What is he doing?
>> Yeah, it's like this like um me when I had to get that possum out of my garage.
Actual story, by the way.
>> You get that possum out of the garage.
>> Oh, Kitty Nom says, "My husband pointed out there's an alien accent in Invader Zim. That tremolo thing isn't unique to Zim. Lard does it here. A navigator does it in one episode. Dips hologramming GGO's crazy and stuff does it.
Interesting. The alien accent.
It's like it's how the show does irreparable damage to everyone's speech patterns. I think Membrane does it too, which like that's that's what Matad used in the Membrane is an alien hypothesis, which like I guess, but like >> I guess bro, >> the important they think they're important. Uh, it's a I think I'm important to accent, I guess.
>> Wait, wait. I think I saw something.
>> Emote. Holy emote. [laughter] >> Oh, he's got bat wings. Oh, that. Oh, what is that frame? [laughter] >> What the hell is even that smear frame?
Oh god, that is frame of all time.
>> Leaps up like a cat and then it suddenly his head is fully shaded and then it's not. That's kind of weird.
>> [screaming] >> fun.
>> And Z's laugh is prolonged so much here.
It's so funny.
>> Oh my god, the CGI.
>> Oh my god.
>> Yeah, >> this whole scene's hilarious.
>> Wow, there's the kids. It's purple. A [laughter] >> no chair flaps.
>> That's very nice.
>> Not running. He's like a deer in headlights.
>> It's like a child in a Superman movie.
>> He's just standing there. [laughter] >> Not menacing at all.
>> He's just a He's such a dumbass.
>> Yeah. Oh my god.
[laughter] >> I love that perspective thing. He stares at it, scratches his butt. [laughter] Oh my god. I think this is one of the parts that gets like the the laugh at the laugh out of me most times. No matter how many times I've seen it, just the [laughter] silence.
>> He just stands there. It's so awkward.
>> The flat shot. He's just dumbfounded.
>> Another example what we mean when we say flat shot, this type of thing. It's like perfect 3/4 angle on everyone. That highlight on them.
>> I know. And like look at this too.
This is so >> how the logo shifts though. Whatever.
>> Yeah. Well, >> as someone who also had to animate a logo while keeping it consistent. I'll I'll I'll cut them some slack.
[laughter] >> [laughter] >> These are they're just like playground bullying each other.
>> Is when he decides even more so that he wants to kill T. [laughter] They're like like playground bullies to each other.
>> Real though. That's so real.
[laughter] >> Like how his head's just poking up too.
It's like jerking around. It's kind of cute. to laugh with because >> emergency and parasite containment.
[laughter] >> Oh, I love that gift.
>> Oh my god, everyone spam that gift in the chat. This is the time. And his hands clench and unclench.
Very nice.
Because of Zim, I also make that sound when I run like that. [laughter] I do that.
>> We never see this thing again. What is this?
>> It looks very like abortion. I mean, they did just establish that uh you know, like the abortions are where uh the Urkans get all of their tech, all of it.
>> Even uh that's a this is the thing in the comics. Uh their inventors have packs full of abortion brains. That's a canon thing. So >> true.
>> Um I'm guessing this is just like abortion design that they never bothered to like repaint to look more Urkin.
>> Yeah, I was just about to say like this thing is in like beta developments. They just haven't painted it yet.
>> Detail on that. Good god.
>> Like oh my Jesus.
>> And all the other ships come in to help.
Aw.
>> See, look at this lighting on them.
>> To kill him.
>> They're going to tell him. They're going to tell him off. [laughter] >> Wait, wait. Where did the lines on their uniforms go?
>> Uh, the lines on their uniforms.
>> Okay, now they're back. But in the previous shot, uh, the previous have like the the lines in their chest pieces.
>> Um, oh, purple doesn't. Red does.
>> Purple doesn't.
Purple's the one that's not an overcan.
What?
>> Yeah. Come on.
>> These are the longest Urkin bodies I've ever seen. Dear God.
[laughter] >> They're stretchy like cats.
>> Let's give our friend Zam a call.
>> Yeah.
[laughter] It's me hurting to think.
>> Oh my god.
>> Oh, by the way, every time like Flamgo and I have to like um like talk to people, um just imagine us as like red and purple. Makes us less intimidating.
>> We're uh tall as pink and violet.
>> That's true. It's true. I should draw us as that.
>> Actually, I need more indigo, but whatever.
>> Hey, Ka. Wait, I'm tallest fuchsia.
You're tallest indigo. Ka's tallest mids.
>> Yes.
>> And that's a fact.
>> We're uh better cuz we're three tallest instead of two.
>> That's true.
>> Is that the tallest as well? We're like the main. [laughter] >> Yeah.
>> I like this lighting too. It's like constantly shifting.
Sorry. I know they can I know the tallest can float, but it's funny just seeing them hover like that. Even if it's an overcan, they bother to do this frame. Wow.
Urkins vomiting. Great. Hey, the massive got fixed quick.
>> Not on the donuts. Me to me when I accidentally spill lava and it catches fire everywhere.
>> What a marathon coming back.
>> I know.
>> That was a long episode. I hope your hard drive doesn't die.
>> It's like two hours of video. It should be fine.
>> Yay. Look at that.
Applause.
>> Double uh a whole double amu episode. Very great. Very excellent.
>> Excellent.
All right, that was a double length episode. Uh covered in 1 hour and 50 minutes. That beats The Nightmare Begins where it took us.
>> That felt very long.
>> Yeah, it did.
But uh if anyone wants to see um I'm going to read a few things from the wiki. Uh so uh facts of doom cultural references in the very beginning when Zim is calling to the almighty talis for a while. It may be a reference to the popular hey listen meme from the Legend of Zelda video game series by Nintendo.
I guess, bro. But we know the real reason behind it was just like Richard and Jonah being idiots.
>> I guess, bro.
>> When Div appears next to Zim, a blue button appears and says new player. This is a reference to multiplayer video games. No.
Nuh-uh.
>> No. No way. Oh no. There's no way. Um, there's a scene in this episode that's similar to the arcade game Centipede when the massive appeared on screen as a long line that snakes around. Sure, >> bro.
>> Prisoner 777. Maybe maybe a reference to Jonan Vasquez's Johnny the Homicidal Maniac as 777 is Johnny season dress.
>> Hey, I never bridged that before for some reason.
>> It might be. Maybe.
>> Maybe. I actually wouldn't doubt that one.
>> Yeah. Last one. The premise for this episode seems to have been partially inspired by both the Batman the animated series episode the mechanic and the movie Batman Returns where the penguin takes control of the Batmobile similarly to how Zim took control of the massive here. I sure I guess things you [music] might have missed.
the bloody gur. I did miss it because it's not there. Uh yeah, that's but yeah, that's some wiki stuff. And after that, we will be doing uh More Toaster Soul Stealer.
>> Oh boy. Jonah's least favorite episode.
>> I think it's a lot of people's least favorite episode.
>> I actually don't mind that one. like like if you actually give it a chance, it's uh it's like there's a lot of funny things in it, especially uh the the pants.
>> No, [music] [music] you aren't from Earth if you don't know how to really pronounce it. How do we pronounce it?
>> Buies.
