[00:00:00]Let's look at this scene from No Country for Old Men and see how it is that the sound design makes the predictable almost unpredictable.

[00:00:06]Here, main character Llewelyn is being hunted down by Anton Chigurh through a hotel. Llewelyn discovers a tracker in his case of money that he's stolen and awaits Anton's arrival. There's no soundtrack. All the sounds outside the room are distant, including Anton killing the desk clerk downstairs.

[00:00:22]Anton's shadow appears beneath the door, but you just barely hear him approach to begin with.

[00:00:28]And you also slightly hear him unscrew the hall light outside of Llewelyn's room. Um you see the shadow beneath the door and the light on the tracker speed up, all ramping the tension up until the climax of the sequence.

[00:00:47]You know what's going to happen, but a sense of exactly when is quietly being toyed with. As soon as this happens, the cuts speed up and the action continues. The lack of soundtrack makes every solitary sound bite all the more effective and are enhanced by the fact that we can barely see where Anton is at any point during the rest of the sequence. So, there's little telling where any of his shots are going to be coming from.
