Flash flooding possible in parts of NY, NJ
Added:Uh, we have some really nasty weather going north and west of town and we have sky cams pointed to the north and west as you get into the northern northern suburbs. In fact, let's go over and we'll take a look at this thunderstorm as you look up around say Passaic County. Guys, zoom in a little bit tighter here. I'm waiting to see if we can actually see some lightning from this cell that is situated to the left of the George Washington Bridge. We're zooming in towards Fort Lee and you can see the base of the cloud lowering. So, that is indicative of a storm that is intensifying and producing prolific lightning across our northern suburbs.
Check it out. We'll go to radar. We'll show you it now moving into say Passaic County, extreme western Bergen County.
Another appendage of this cell is up around Ramapo into Rockland County.
We're estimating almost 60 lights bolts of lightning in the last 15 minutes and this is tracking towards Bergen County and Westchester over the next hour. It's a slow-moving uh you've noticed is we are detecting lightning in the city from a storm that is 30 miles to the northwest. So, it actually is producing some thunder and lightning in midtown. You may have heard it the last 15 minutes and you can see more activity starting to populate as you get around the Yonkers area. There's a flash flood warning until 1:00 for Sussex and Warren County. This area that was flash flood warned, we are seeing the rain pushing off to your east, but nonetheless, it's still a very important storm heading towards the Patterson area and then eventually as you get to the northern suburbs. The Bronx, by the way, nothing yet, but we are expecting that downpour to your in the next hour. Check out the rains already in the last couple hours.
Sussex County picking up 4 inches of rain in 1 hour. That's the type of dynamics we're talking about with these storms. We have more storms firing off to the west, western Pennsylvania, upstate New York. They're already severe warned and that's the batch of storms that gets in here as you head towards the afternoon and evening. If you leave the city a little early, that is definitely the best guidance I can give you because everything, that window of dryness, is closing rapidly and we're going to get into these heavy hitter storms by the afternoon. As early as 3:00, we're going to see a lot of activity around the Connecticut River Valley, couple storms popping across Suffolk County. It's this squall line though from say Poughkeepsie to Troy Hills, all the way down towards Philly, that is what's going to pack a punch, 60 mph wind gusts and yes, the flash flooding potential. Notice how the line of storms throws on the brakes after 8:00 and that's when we get into our flash flood concern for say Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau County, Suffolk County, you get down towards the Asbury Park, Point Pleasant area after 8:00 tonight and eventually we clear the coast after 10:00. An isolated thunderstorm is certainly possible as we head towards Wednesday. Severe weather threats, lot of modes of severe weather in play, but I think the three most important are wind gusts to 60 mph, the flash flooding is very high across the entire Channel 11 viewing area. If you're hearing my voice right now, you're under the gun for the possibility of flash flooding and vivid lightning. We're already showing you that 10 minutes to 10:00. If I were to pick one area that could lose power today and see trees come down, I think it's going to be this area, northern New Jersey, back into western Mammoth County, western Ocean County, just away from the ocean. So, west the Garden State Parkway. Yes, could the city see a 60 or 70 mph wind gust? Sure, but the potential is the highest as you go south and west of the city. And when you have this type of dynamic, when you have a warm front involved, when you have a lot of twisting and spinning of the atmosphere, we have to put in a tornado risk. It's not the highest risk, but there is certainly an elevated chance of a quick spin-up tornado.
Obviously, we have a flash flood concern through the course of the day. By the way, Bertha is out there in the uh Gulf, but we'll talk more about that tomorrow when the white when the weather quiets down here. We're at 84 tomorrow with showers and thunderstorms, especially south of the city. Low 80s on Thursday and Friday, and we could breathe a sigh of relief as we head towards the weekend. 80s at day, 60s and 70s at night with low humidity. So, this is going to be a very active day. Keep it locked on PIX and PIX 11 Plus will be doing streaming, live streaming for the course of the afternoon. Guys, I'll send it back to you.
