The human digestive system breaks down food through a multi-stage process: the stomach mixes food with enzymes (represented by orange juice) and bile (green food coloring) to begin digestion; the small intestine absorbs nutrients (represented by juice being squeezed out) while microbes (glitter) help break down food; finally, the large intestine processes the remaining material into waste. This entire process transforms food into energy and nutrients that the body uses to grow and stay healthy.

Ready to make some poop? Let's poop it.
>> Let's do it. This is going to represent the stomach, okay? So, you want to hold the stomach open. So, we've got some mushy bananas here, nice and ripe, so they're nice and soft and squishy.
Pop it in like whoop, poop. We're going to throw some crackers in there.
Crush them up. That's it. Awesome.
That's making a nice mess. And I'm going to pour some orange juice in. Okay? This is going to represent stomach enzymes, okay? And all of the saliva and things that are going to churn everything up.
So, let's take the bag and you're going to mash it up with your hands.
I never knew making poop would be this fun.
So, this green food coloring represents bile. And bile is an enzyme. It's made in the liver to help you digest all the fats from your diet. So, the liver is also involved? Oh, yeah. It's a whole body sport digesting food.
Now, it's vomit color. That's right.
Let's add some other ingredients to make it look more like poop. Put some coffee in. Keep going. That'll do. That'll do.
There we go. Nice and warm, just like body temperature. Now, it's a bit runny, isn't it? So, that's a problem. We need it to be a little bit less runny. So, let's put some brownie mix in there.
Brownie mix will make it nice and thick.
Let's pour the whole lot in. Let's see what that does.
Yay. Excellent. All right. Well, we're missing one last thing, the star of the show. Do you know what that might be?
This. That. That is going to represent the microbes. We have live bugs in our stomach?
>> Oh, yes, you do. They're the magic.
Beautiful. Look at all those good microbes going in there.
Now, this nylon is going to represent the small intestine, okay? Going to cut a corner. Going to squeeze it in. You have to hold it up. Make sure it doesn't go anywhere. Get all of this food from the stomach into the small intestine.
>> Yeah. Oh, look at that. Oh, that's beautiful.
>> big meal.
It looks like a big chocolate drop. The small intestine squeezes the food through. so now you try squeezing the food and see what happens.
Squeeze it. Squeeze it hard. And oh, look what's happening. All of that juice that's coming out is actually representing the nutrients that your body is absorbing. But it's really gross.
>> [laughter] >> It really is gross, but it's very important work that your body's doing, taking all those nutrients to make you big and strong. So now what we've got to do is we've got to squeeze it through to the other end. So >> [music] >> there we go. That's it. So this is it moving through the small intestine.
Okay, there we go. It's going to come out.
>> Now it's getting into the large intestine and oh, oh, I think we might have poop.
And there it is.
There's our poop. Yes. So proud. Oh, and the glitter is still here. The glitter represents the microbes, billions of tiny organisms that were helping you to break down your food to make good poop.
And you need to feed them well in order [music] for them to do their job. You can think of them as your pets. Your gut pets. So we actually eat the food in our bellies, too? They do. They look after you. They actually help you by making lots of molecules to help [music] you to stay healthy. Hey, Boniax. Don't be looking for any glittery microbes in your loads. We don't poop out our gut pets. This crafty version of poo is just a demonstrate their importance.
