Effective film writing requires organic emotional development and character depth; when characters make extreme life decisions without proper emotional buildup, the narrative feels immature and frustrating to audiences, as demonstrated by Cocktail 2's failure to establish meaningful emotional stakes despite its dramatic premise.

Cocktail 2 Movie Review | Bollywood Did It Again | Shahid Kapoor | Kriti Sanon | Rashmika Mandanna
Added:Hello viewers, welcome to India today.
This is Maruti Acharya.
>> And I'm Sanjay Punappa.
>> We just completed watching the latest Bollywood film >> Obsession.
>> Pill 2. I mean, Bollywood version of Obsession in a very tricky I don't know what to call it, but yeah, Cocktail 2.
Before getting into further details, if you completed watching the film, mention your review in the comment section below. And Sanjay >> Obsession didn't scare me as much as this film has scared me, has scarred me.
Frustrated, tired, and drained is what I'd say. There are some moments of fun.
There were some moments where I expected this to be a good fun evening.
But then things went on a downward spiral for me.
Obsessed.
>> As soon as I walked out of the theater, my thought is if the fan theory, social media theories are far more interesting than the film itself, then you know something definitely went wrong with the film. But again, why? What? Stay tuned.
Firstly, what works in the film? Rajma chawal scene with in the car.
>> Kadi chawal.
>> Kadi oh.
Just because I don't know rajma chawal kadi chawal.
>> I think you and Cocktail 2 should break up.
>> Yeah, kadi chawal scene was good. There is a dialogue portion between Shahid Kapoor and his father in the pre-climax side was good.
Everybody looked good.
The visuals, Kriti Sanon, songs. Songs were good.
>> Okay, on a more >> subscribe.
>> [laughter] >> On a more serious note, to be totally honest, when the film started, it gave me a feel of the old school Western Bollywood, the films like Salaam Namaste, films like Hum Tum, films like Ta Ra Rum Pum. Yeah, a little bit of Cocktail at the start. There were films like that in Bollywood back in 2010s, >> Mhm.
>> late 2000s and early 2010s where, you know, all these things used to be shown crisp, fast. You could see the very obvious Western influence of filmmaking and how it is made. And yeah, so that that feeling kind of made me feel good at the start of the film.
>> The visual aesthetic of the film visually the movie looks like a painting undoubtedly. Sicily is the new Corsica.
The wedding, the songs, everything which like he mentioned reminiscent of the old Bollywood.
>> Music in the film was good. The background score as well and at the same time there a lot of the songs >> People are already hooked to Mashooka.
>> There are a couple of other songs too which probably didn't catch the eye before the film's release, but post release if you watch the film you might get hooked to it. Didn't really have a problem with the rehash version of Bandu. I liked it.
>> Performances?
>> I mean I hated Kriti Sanon in the film and I think that adds to the actor's potential of conveying the character. I don't know how many people will come out liking her character very much even though you know, at the end it's like huh, come join us, whatever happens, but I totally hated her character.
I I hated Rashmika's character also. The only character I liked is Shahid Kapoor who was kind of playing a role which is >> Kabir Singh red green forest.
>> Who? Kunal?
>> I really liked Shahid Kapoor's performance because he had that innocence which Kunal's role definitely demanded. Naive, innocent. It's a very thin gap and Shahid Kapoor definitely did a phenomenal job in communicating that he's a very innocent and he's somebody who's really in love and he's someone who has his own principles.
Though there are some flaws. He is a certain way and it is beautifully communicated. Kriti Sanon's character also her performance was really good though the character has a lot of problems. Her performance was really good.
>> Rashmika Mandanna is definitely a hit and miss for me. I'll be very honest with you.
>> Does a decent job at best I feel. Like there were moments in the film where a lot of emotions were supposed to be communicated, but it doesn't really come through. You have to wait for the dialogues and the screenplay to progress further to understand the actions here.
Otherwise you'll just Like you said, you do not like the character that she's playing there because of the choices and the motive for those choices only gets revealed later on through dialogues and not through the emotion. I feel like that is some place where she was lacking a little bit. Some conversations felt really meaningful.
>> were actually meaningful.
>> conversations were very relatable and that actually moved me. But, at the same time, immediately that gets cut and it it moves into the frustrating part and that makes it even Oh yeah, why did it go here once again? That feeling it kept piling up over and over and over again and by the second half, it just that whole meaningfulness of the film just gets lost right until the climax that is where again, there to there might be scope for discourse because I personally like the climax or the conversation that happened around the climax. By then, I had already given up. So, what's the point? There has to be a lot of meaningfulness meaningful conversations if the film is about emotional drama, right?
>> You can put it this way, if the director and the makers' motive was to frustrate at frustrate at least one segment of the audience, I I think he he's he's done well. So, if if that was the motive to frustrate one set of the audience, then they've done it.
>> The things that didn't work for me in the film, firstly, the whole concept itself didn't sit well for me because they tried very hard to not reveal any- anything in the trailer. It is extremely difficult to talk about the point without mentioning the spoilers. But still, I will make sure I don't reveal any spoilers.
Starting from the introduction of Kriti Sanon scene and the way Rashmika Mandanna character involves Shahid Kapoor's character who's Kunal into the dynamics with Kriti Sanon's character and what how it unravels, what is the expectation, what is the goal, how will it lead up to it and what will happen?
And the second half, the consequences, who was against whom, who was obsessed with whom, what is happening, who is the whole drama, the whole conflict feels extremely immature. First of all, Kriti Sanon's character, my biggest problem is she says she never experienced what love feels like. She's somebody who wants to feel. She's just taking life the way it comes.
But every scene, she has three to four minutes of molar monologue with life, persuading Shahid Kapoor's character.
Why? And to Rashmika's character, from the starting itself, whatever you have done with Shahid Kapoor's character, why? And Shahid Kapoor's character, Kunal, Kunal, why? Why couldn't you see anything? Oh, it was a very frustrating watch.
>> This is what I said, when if the director wanted this reaction, then he's gotten it. What my problem is the way the thing everything was written in the film. Now, I'm not just talking about screenplay, the character and character traits.
If, for example, uh Shahid Kapoor and Rashmika's relationship in the film is is of 16 years. Whenever certain calls are made in the relationship during the due course of the film, I I it felt like it is it is probably a 6-month relation.
In ZNMD, Kabir had to take a whole Spain trip just to convince himself to make a certain move, just to convince himself that everything is happening soon. He isn't ready to get married and >> what not.
>> Yeah.
>> 16 years, man, and that was the call, and there was no emotional turmoil properly established. There was no stakes properly established. It all felt like a child's play from a writing point of view.
>> Second thing that didn't work for me in the film is lack of emotional depth. If anything, Cocktail 2 is the best example of a film which is fully banking on emotions and emotional strength and absolutely lacks it because every character like if you think about the decisions the characters are taking extremely big steps in life. It is scary to think about it but because of the lack of emotional depth everything that the character is doing looks very generic simple and carefree. That is how they were behaving. That is clearly because of lack of emotional depth in writing and that's one of the biggest problems of Cocktail 2.
>> I honestly felt really bad for Shahid Kapoor's character and at a point it felt like a tennis game was going on.
And then they were just And it was all smashes and we could feel it sitting here. The the film claims that all all characters in play here have this immense obsessive love for Kunal. But for from a visual point of view it just felt like do they actually love him?
It felt like they weren't going for depth but just going for the emotional strain to be shown. This strain has to be organic when you write it. And if you're just trying to get that particular emotion without any adjacent emotions, it just doesn't work. Organic writing needs is important.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah, frustration I feel is is the word of this review because nothing else is just popping up in my mind. It's all a major blur. To be practically speaking once again, I I kind of see the scope that a certain part of the audience might like the film for the drama it serves.
>> For the Kalish.
>> I yeah, the Kalish. Exactly. And while watching the film I this the reals where you know, there's a couple sitting and then there's a friend sitting there and then suddenly the one sitting in the middle will stand up and clap and then the other two are holding.
That is the sort of drama that I just watched and came is what I felt.
Uh Yeah, just tired man, tired.
>> With that, this is Maruthia Chaya.
>> I am Sanjay Ponappa.
>> And you're watching India Today.
