Inspectors Found an 8-Ton Steel Roll Actively Falling Through a Trailer — On a Public Highway

[00:00:15]Well, I got proof with this story, real proof of exactly why inspectors need to be out there pulling trucks over and checking them. Because what they found on one truck during a recent blitz in Ontario, Canada, is something that could have killed somebody on the highway.

[00:00:38]Now, last weekend the Ontario Provincial Police, the OPP, conducted a proactive commercial motor vehicle enforcement operation in the Marathon Detachment area.

[00:00:51]Now, this was a CVSA certified inspection effort, and they inspected six commercial vehicles during this operation.

[00:00:59]Six trucks. And what they found across those six inspections is alarming. Now, here are the numbers. Six inspections, 40 charges laid, 16 warnings issued, and four commercial vehicles placed completely out of service due to safety concerns.

[00:01:18]Now, four out of six trucks had issues serious enough to pull them off the road. That is not a small percentage.

[00:01:25]Those trucks were on the highway before they got pulled in.

[00:01:29]They were sharing the road with everyone else. But the one that really caught everyone's attention, the one that the OPP specifically highlighted, was a truck carrying an 8-ton steel roll.

[00:01:44]That is 16,000 lb of steel. And when inspectors looked at that trailer, they didn't just find that the cargo wasn't properly secured, they found that the steel roll was actively, in their word, actively falling through the trailer.

[00:02:00]The frame of that trailer was so severely damaged that a 16,000-lb steel roll was in the process of breaking through it while the truck was on the road. Now, let me say that again because I wanted to sink in. An 8-ton steel roll actively falling through the trailer floor on a public highway while other vehicles were around it. Now, if that steel roll had broken through completely at highway speed, we are not talking about a fender bender. We are talking about a catastrophic event. A 16,000-lb piece of steel hitting the road or another vehicle at highway speed. I mean, people would have died. Now, this is exactly why cargo securement is not something to take lightly. It's not paperwork. It's not a technicality.

[00:02:51]Now, I want to talk to you about the responsibility side of this. As owner-operator or driver, when you sign off on a load, when you accept that cargo, when you pull out that yard, you are responsible for what's on your truck and how it's secured. That's the law and that's the reality. So, walk your trailer every single time, check your cargo, pull on those straps, look at your frame, and if you see damage, document it. Refuse the load if it's not safe. I know that's easier said than done when a dispatcher is breathing down your neck or you're worried about losing the load, but your CDL, your freedom, and the lives of the people around you on that highway are worth more than any single load.
