This video explores the discovery of a historic contraceptive artifact (a 1700s lamb's bladder prophylactic) from Holy Lady Hospital, the first hospital run by women for women, and examines the debate over who should own and control historical artifacts related to women's reproductive rights, highlighting tensions between academic institutions and local communities in preserving women's healthcare history.

Pioneer Girl | EP103 Lady Hospital | KindaTVAdded:
Ever seen a picture of Florence Nightingale? Now that chick could rock a bonnet. Serious cut eye though. Oh man, I'd be pissed, too. Imagine nursing before electricity and feminism. Not only did she save lives, she also fought for workers' rights, including sex workers. She had all the rich white lady privilege with a lot of creepy colonial views to prove it. And she still died from bacteria caught on the job. How you imagine doing all that oldtimey nursing as a black woman? Bernice Redmond. She wanted to be a nurse from the time she was 8 years old, but Canadian schools wouldn't admit her. So, she traveled south to Virginia to get her degree.
Only one problem, America, racism, segregation. So, she came back to practice in Nova Scotia, and she still became Canada's first black nurse.
Sam, what are you doing?
>> You went silent. Thought you'd finally given up.
Hey, stop. Stop.
What I just found will change everything.
Wait, Sam. Really dug your own grave on this one?
>> Wait, Sam. Sam, it's claustrophobic in here.
>> Try deflating your ego, >> Sam. Sam. Sam, look. I didn't mean to take up all that space. Okay.
>> Oh, no. Seems like taking up space is your love language.
>> Sam. Sam. Okay, look.
I will help you install your art exhibit once WE SAVE THIS GODFORSAKEN VILLAGE FROM COMPLETE FINANCIAL RUIN. SAM, I can't die in here. Patrick cannot have the last word.
>> I'm always covered in dirt when I see you. I wouldn't want it any other way.
Oh >> yeah, you like it dirty.
>> Yeah, >> I love earth deposits.
I know.
This is it.
>> Is is what?
>> I knew I could find some real history here. My research was right.
>> Oh [ __ ] she got out.
>> Historians have been searching for the site of Holy Lady Hospital, the first hospital run by women for women for 300 years.
Everybody stand back.
We must preserve the integrity of the artifact.
Lamb's bladder prophylactic to prevent the transmission.
>> What is it?
>> It's a historic condom.
This is a piece of history in our fight for women's reproductive rights. Sex sells, even if it's safe sex. I'm calling Good Day Morning.
>> It's also a piece of history that Patrick can't steal.
So, the woman frontline worker does all the dirty work, and you hand over the glory to the dude with doctor before his name.
>> Well, Patrick will draw a larger crowd.
It is survival of the biggest. Plus, if they have a fight, the press will lap it up. I don't like her, but I'm not down for this girl and girl violence.
>> Well, I'm a complex woman, just like Margaret Atwood, >> looking straight into Gilead as we speak.
>> Looks like you uh finally found your book idea to get out of here.
>> God, I hope so.
Ladies and gentlemen, today we bear witness to a very exciting discovery.
But first, please help me welcome our local historian, Professor Patrick McIntyre, and also our very own Pioneer Girl.
>> It's nice to see you again, Elanor.
You here to steal more of my research?
>> You don't own history, Eleanor. It belongs to all of us. I discussed that idea in my book. Have you read it?
>> Oh, I don't need to read it because I wrote it.
>> Oh. Uh, very interesting.
Oh, this is indeed an early example of male contraception.
I would date this 1700s, maybe earlier. And to that end, I would like to thank the old timey place u days times uh village for discovering this significant artifact and the university would be pleased to take it into our possession.
>> Uh we do still have to discuss the price.
>> Well, absolutely not.
>> What?
>> What?
>> You can't have it. We may not own history, but women need to own their own reproductive rights. And and that starts with this very very important artifact from a pioneering woman's hospital that speaks to the fundamental role of men in contraception which should not always be a woman's burden even if suck man is most certainly impotent.
>> Eleanor, you simply do not have the appropriate conservation resources and protocols in this place. Um, you would be putting the artifact at risk of degradation. Yeah. Hi, James from the Herald. Will a Pioneer Girl be withholding the vintage condom because she's an angry feminist? Yes or no?
>> What? Excuse me? Are you serious right now?
>> Are happy to work with the university on finding a fair market value for the relocation of this historical um device.
>> I'm sorry. This is garbage. Oh, now you're finally willing to use a condom.
You know full well that I'm allergic.
>> Yes. Well, I hope the ammonia deposits on this 300-year-old lamb splatter make your psoriasis flare up.
>> All sales are final.
You're dead. You're dead. You're dead to me. I promise myself.
You're dead. You're dead. You're dead to me.
