[00:00:17][music] They wear the red coats and armor of the Spanish Habsburg army, the same troops occupying Brueghel's homeland in the 1560s.

[00:00:27]One herald originally carried the double-headed eagle of the Habsburg empire on his chest.

[00:00:32]Brueghel disguised a real atrocity as a Bible story because direct criticism meant death.

[00:00:38]And here is what happened next. [music] The painting ended up in the collection of Emperor Rudolf II, [music] a Habsburg himself.

[00:00:46]He ordered every dead child in the painting to be painted over, replaced with animals, bundles, and jugs.
