Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863; this 25-year delay between freedom declared and freedom enforced in Texas represents the ongoing struggle for racial equality and justice in America.

Juneteenth The 25 Year Delay Between Freedom Declared and Freedom Enforced in Texas #blackhistoryAdded:
Imagine being told freedom had arrived, but the news didn't reach you for 2 and 1/2 years.
That's the heart of Juneteenth. On January 1st, 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring enslaved people in Confederate states to be free. But in Texas, slavery continued. There was little Union military presence, and many enslavers treated Texas like a safe haven. Then, on June 19th, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas. General Gordon Granger announced that all enslaved people in Texas were free. That day became Juneteenth, short for June 19th. The first celebrations began in Texas in 1866 with prayer, music, food, and community gatherings. As black families moved across the country, the tradition spread with them. Slavery was formally abolished later in 1865 by the 13th Amendment, but Juneteenth remembers the moment freedom was finally enforced in one of the last places still holding on.
