Beach metal detecting in areas with high concentrations of black iron sand and electromagnetic interference (EMI) from marine and aviation radars causes chattering, reduced depth, and distorted tones and VDI readings, requiring detectorists to slow down and continuously adjust their equipment controls to compensate for these environmental factors.

Beachgoers were extra chatty. Was it the cap?Añadido:
I'm in the people section of Ocean Beach in San Diego.
Sure looks different without the giant berm.
First tone.
23 and the sun is coming up.
We're under the departure path of an airport runway, so it's going to be noisy.
Wow.
What is this?
Somebody buried their Trader Joe's peanut butter.
I don't do towel lines, but since it's so visibly clear where it is here and there's nobody currently in it, I'm following it and have found a a tone.
A screaming dime, I think.
Okay.
Oh, but I see a penny, something brown.
No.
It's a dime.
Another strong tone.
Lower 70s.
Doesn't look like a coin on the trace. Oh, man.
Look at this.
Every time I dig, I'm getting completely covered in sand and going in my shoes.
That was worth it for this.
Hoop earring.
89 Sounds like a quarter.
And it is a quarter.
12 That's aluminum.
Well Um, I think I found a dime right here. A dime? I think. Ooh.
Yeah. Let's get away from the water.
Different beeps, different Different beeps, different tones, uh different different numbers on the screen.
It is here. Oh, do you see it?
Oh, okay. Good eye.
Thank you very much.
>> Yeah, have fun. Thanks, I will.
Uh, younger people have better eyes. I would have gone back into the water looking for it.
Strong six usually ketchup packets.
But I did once find a gold ring at a six.
I got to wash it out.
It's too muddy to shake out.
It would be something good.
Let's see.
Ah, quarter.
Piece of foil.
I've always wanted to find one of these jet just so I could do it.
All right, let me give you my my card here. You can watch it on eBay.
Or not eBay, um, YouTube. Okay.
That's me. I will definitely watch it cuz I like watching things like that.
Now, what can you find this time? Right.
Hey, have a good one. You as well, sir.
No luck at all in the wet, so I'm back in the dry.
And I think I'm going to detect along the rocks here.
Maybe on the back side.
Low 50s.
They're pretty strong, though.
Shake, shake.
Okay.
I see something good here.
Oh, it's junky.
Better than a coin though. Better than a quarter.
There's got to be something in there.
Looks like another quarter. Oh, oh.
Okay.
Well, at least I got it.
I think the asphalt is only an inch or two under the sand.
So, this is sand blown over the edge of the parking lot.
Quarter.
25.
It's not a coin.
Or at least it's not a nickel.
Nothing.
Says there's something there.
Hey.
I see no mark.
Looks silver.
Where I want to detect has been coned off for emergency vehicles, so they let you walk through it, but they probably wouldn't want me to stop and detect there.
So, I'm over here closer to the grass.
15 16 You weren't going to collect these, were you? No, I'm metal detecting.
I didn't even know they had Bush Beer anymore.
I bet you get some more goodies with your metal detector though. Uh just really crusty coins, you know, corroded pennies.
Very rarely, once every few months.
Yeah.
Thank you.
And this is a grommet.
Low '60s.
I'll even dig pennies cuz there's so few targets around here. Oh, it's not a penny.
It is a screw cap.
'88 quarter.
Uh there it is.
Upside down again.
Probably a zinc penny.
Lower '60s.
There it is.
Uh zinc penny.
Another zincin.
At least I got it.
And I hear it.
I just thought Pre-corrosion zinc and Even if it's a penny, I'll dig it.
It is yet another penny.
And Look at this oversized chair.
Used to have a tall back on it.
Like a year or so ago, but I guess someone broke it off.
And it has to be locked, so someone doesn't steal the whole chair.
I think this is a quarter.
Check it out.
Yes.
Quarter.
Wow.
That's howling.
And a weird number.
Around the 50s.
Oh, no. Glob you light.
The dog beach.
I've never seen the tide so low.
Okay, I don't want to get in the dogs' way, so I'll detect behind them.
Oh, wait. I don't have a dog. Never mind.
There was absolutely nothing where the dogs were and just behind them.
This area must be thoroughly detected, though I didn't see any other people detecting.
So, detect over here.
79 81 Sounds like a dime.
Oh, there it is.
Hey.
I can't get it.
Dime.
This might be the first nickel.
Well, if it's a nickel, it'll be the first one I found this whole trip.
And it is.
Nickel.
This is a very active sounding quarter.
That was the dog making weird noises.
Not me.
>> Yeah, that was a good one.
Nickel.
No.
Quarter. Dude.
It's kind of a dead sounding tone, but it's strong.
I saw a dime.
Oh, that's not a dime again.
Dime.
Very loud quarter.
87 88 Make sure there weren't two.
I had to check it out. There it is.
28 29 little high for a nickel.
See if it's in here.
Right color.
It's a pull tab.
It's strong.
It's zincing.
Oh, shake it out. Oh, it's a dime, not a zinc and Okay.
Oh, maybe there was a penny in there.
Yes.
There was a penny.
Near my hotel in National City, I found a small local food court in a plain detached building with maybe 10 kitchens and a gift shop.
I chose Donburi rice bowl.
Their Tonkatsu curry is the real deal.
Pork, not chicken, and hot Japanese curry, not the weak and watery stuff like in adjacent cuisines.
The salad was great, too, especially the dressing.
Ocean Beach challenges me as a detectorist. The high concentration of black iron in the sand, combined with EMI I suspect from marine and airport radars, causes chattering, reduced depth, and distorted tones and VDI readings.
Knowing this after multiple visits, I now slow down and tweak my controls as needed.
In 3 hours, I found four quarters, three dimes, one nickel, and five pennies.
A bling hoop earring, kids ring, and a small charm with a glowing stone completed the day's haul of keepers.
The other items are a screw cap, grommet, and a folded gold colored pull tab.
Thank you for watching to the end. Your likes, comments, and subscriptions are highly appreciated.
See you next time.
