A function is continuous at a point if the left-hand limit (LHL), right-hand limit (RHL), and the function value at that point are all equal. For modulus functions, critical points occur where the expression inside the modulus equals zero, and these points are always continuous. For signum functions (|x|/x), the function is discontinuous at x=0 because LHL=-1 and RHL=+1, but continuous at all other points. For functions like x·sin(1/x), the function is continuous at x=0 because both LHL and RHL approach 0. For exponential functions like e^(1/x), the function is discontinuous at x=0 because LHL=-1 and RHL=+1.
