Then her mother crossed the field and took Haru's face in both hands. She looked at it for a long time.

What the accounts did not record was the space between arrival and departure. The geijo occupied the base of a domestic hierarchy that was formally structured and practically absolute. She had contracted obligations. She had contracted protections, meals, shelter, salary.

[00:39:05]No standing. No recourse. She could be denied her holiday.

[00:39:10]She could be accused of theft. She could be physically punished by senior staff.

[00:39:18]Dismissed, in the language of the accounts, simply as departed. And what happened in the corridors after midnight was not discussed, not recorded, not acknowledged, not named. Because to name it would have required the period to recognize something it was not prepared to recognize.

[00:39:38]That a contract for a woman's labor and access to her body were not the same thing. The Edo period was not prepared to recognize this. So, it wasn't recognized, and the footsteps continued, and the girls learned to count the boards, and some of them served out their three years and went home with their earnings and tried to forget. And some of them disappeared from the ledgers without explanation, listed simply as departed with no date, no destination, no further notation. And some of them, on a Thursday night in late winter, walked out the back door with their coins sewn into their robes and did not look back.

[00:40:20]The Ukiyo-e prints of Edo's golden period are extraordinary works of art.

[00:40:25]They depicted the pleasure districts and the theater and the famous landscapes and the beautiful women of the highest social tiers. They documented the city's life with remarkable specificity and beauty. They did not depict the geijo.

[00:40:41]Not because the geijo did not exist. Not because the artist couldn't see her, but because she occupied the part of the city's life that did not become art. The part that was too ordinary, too daily, too much like the background condition of everything else to be worth representing separately. But the background condition of everything else is not nothing. The merchant whose business appears in the historical record operated from a household where the fire was lit before he woke up. The official whose administrative decisions shaped policy lived in a house where the floors were swept by hands that did not belong to the official. The artist whose prints survive in museums ate food prepared by someone who had been awake since 4:00 in the morning. The geijo was not peripheral to Edo. She was load-bearing. The fire that started in the kitchen before dawn was her. The warm house that Edo woke up in was her.

They are sustained by specific people doing specific work at specific hours that no one else wants to do. When those people leave, when the calculation finally tips and they stop showing up, the fire that was meant to be banked becomes the fire that takes everything down. The house is always at risk when it forgets that the kitchen runs on a person, not a function. This is not a story about revenge. It is a story about the thing that happens when a system mistakes endurance for permanence. Haru endured because she had to. She stopped enduring when the cost became too high. And the house that had taken her name and given her Oi in return, that had called her a function and treated her as less than the objects she cleaned and carried, that house discovered on a Thursday night in late winter that the fire it had relied on every morning had been a choice, not a given, a choice.
