See, your brain is not experiencing reality the way you think it is cuz your brain's a prediction machine. That's what it does all day long. It makes predictions. It takes sounds and facial expressions and tone of voice and body language, memories, and past experiences and then makes its best guess about what's about to happen because the thing is your nervous system's not built mainly for happiness. It's built mainly for survival. So, your brain is constantly asking, "What possibly dangerous pattern does this remind me of?" And then it prepares your body accordingly, which means if your past was filled with difficulty, your body learns to be on guard. And if your past was filled with criticism, your body learns defensiveness. If your past was filled with betrayal, emotional explosions, instability, and abandonment, then your nervous system starts predicting pain before pain even arrives. And for most people, anger becomes the protective force inside. And it's not because they're angry people.
It's because somewhere along the way, anger became useful armor. Their system learned, "If I stay guarded, if I stay ready, no one will ever hurt me again."
So, now the brain starts filling in the blanks. Somebody changes their tone slightly, and your nervous system predicts disrespect. Your partner gets quiet, and your body predicts abandonment. Friend takes too long to text back, and suddenly your body's preparing for rejection. And it's not because those things are all definitely true. It's because your nervous system is trying to complete an old survival equation, and you're responding to a prediction your brain is making based on an old pattern, an outdated old map. And this is why doing the inner work and healing actually matters cuz if you don't update the old emotional maps, your nervous system keeps dragging the past into the present.
