People spend more time online, scrolling, escaping, building fake versions of themselves because real life is difficult. Real life is slower, messier, lonelier, just like Coraline's real world. And then there are the ghost children, which become way darker when you rewatch the movie as an adult because they're basically a warning. Every single one of them once believed they had found the perfect world, too. And they lost themselves.
