In criminal trials, defendants may assert self-defense as a legal justification for their actions, and the burden of proof rests on the prosecution to demonstrate beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant's actions were not justified. The case of Karmelo Anthony, a 17-year-old charged with first-degree murder for fatally stabbing another student during a high school track meet in Texas, illustrates how self-defense claims are evaluated in court, with the defense planning to argue that Anthony acted to protect himself during the confrontation.

How the case against Karmelo Anthony unfoldedAñadido:
A fatal stabbing at a Texas high school track meet led to a murder charge, a self-defense claim, and national attention. Before the trial begins June 1st, here's a timeline of the Carmelo Anthony case. On April 2nd, 2025, students from several Frisco ISD schools were attending a track meet at Kirkendall Stadium. During the event, 17-year-olds Austin Metcalfe and Carmelo Anthony were involved in a confrontation over designated team seating in the bleachers.
Police say Anthony stabbed Metcalfe once in the chest, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Anthony later claimed self-defense. He was arrested and charged with murder, and under Texas law, he's being prosecuted as an adult because he was 17 at the time. Anthony was initially held on a $1 million bond, which was later reduced to $250,000.
He was released from custody and placed on house arrest with an ankle monitor, where he's been ever since. The case received national attention online, leading to public debate, fundraising campaigns, and the spread of false information on social media. Law enforcement agencies later addressed several inaccurate claims that were circulating online, including that Anthony would be allowed to attend his graduation ceremony, which he did not.
In June 2025, a Collin County grand jury indicted Anthony on a murder charge. He has pleaded not guilty, and his attorneys say they plan to argue self-defense during trial. Jury selection is scheduled to begin June 1st. The case remains ongoing, and the outcome will be decided in court. We'll be following it all here and at dallasnews.com.
