During World War II, when German U-boats sank, surviving crew members often emerged covered in diesel oil from their ship's engine compartments and fuel tanks, which leaked into the surrounding water. Allied ships nearby sometimes rescued these survivors for humanitarian reasons or to interrogate them as prisoners of war. However, after the Laconia Incident in 1942, when German U-boat rescue attempts were attacked by Allied forces, both sides became more cautious and often avoided rescue operations during combat situations.
