Water of crystallization refers to water molecules that are chemically attached within the crystal structure of certain compounds, such as copper sulfate pentahydrate (blue), washing soda (sodium carbonate decahydrate), and gypsum. When these compounds are heated, the water molecules are driven out, causing the crystals to lose their color and crystal shape, transforming into white powders like anhydrous copper sulfate or plaster of Paris. This concept is an important part of the Class 10 chemistry curriculum.

Why Does Blue Copper Sulfate Turn White on Heating? | Water of Crystallization | Class 10 ChemistryAdded:
What if I told you that color of a crystal can disappear just because it lost water, no chemicals added, no reaction with acid, just heat and suddenly this beautiful crystal becomes white powder. That blue color of copper sulfate pentahhydrate is actually because water molecules are attached inside the crystal. As heating removes the water, the crystal loses both its color and crystal shape. And this attached water is called water of crystallization. An important NCERTT class 10th concept. Washing soda also contains water molecules attached to it.
That's why it is called sodium carbonate decahhydrate and gypsum also contains water. When heated, gypsum loses water and forms plaster of Paris. So next time you see a crystal remember water molecules are sometimes responsible for their color, shape and identity. Thank you so much for watching this video.
