Two engineers accidentally recorded the Big BangAdded:
These two men heard the Big Bang by accident. New Jersey, 1964. Two Bell Labs engineers had a giant aluminum antenna on a hill. They wanted to map the Milky Way. Instead, they found a hiss in every direction, day and night.
It wouldn't stop. They checked New York for interference. They checked the equipment. They checked the sun. Then they found pigeons [music] nesting inside the antenna. In their notes, they called the droppings white dielectric material. They trapped the pigeons and mailed them 30 miles away. The pigeons flew [music] back. So, they shot them.
They cleaned the antenna. The hiss was still there. They called a physicist at Princeton. He had been about to discover the afterglow of the Big Bang. He hung up the phone, turned to his team, and said, "Boys, we've been scooped." The hiss was 13.8 billion years old. It was the light of the universe, still cooling. Two men cleaning bird off an antenna heard the beginning of everything. They won the Nobel Prize.
