Honkai: Star Rail - Fulwish Boss Theme (ALL PHASES) // Reaction & AnalysisAdded:
Hey, what's up everybody? Welcome back to another Hawkeye reaction. Today we have illwish illwish illwish ar to another ar huh illwish arites. God, I have tried this so many times I give up. Illwish arch lotus. Why is that so hard to say?
I digress. We're here listening to this because Kosma said I should and a lot of people agreed. So, without further embarrassment on my own side, let's go.
Okay.
So, we're leaning into the creepy factor.
He just pop.
Oh, well that's beautiful.
Up or down?
Up. Damn.
Woo. Get up there. God. Jesus.
It's such an interesting like Jesus.
That's a great juosition having like the creepiness in there.
But like it's backed by that beautiful vocal line. Wonder if that's going to come back.
Okay, that was a shift.
the the like effects on the voice too like having the all this sound design and the electronic stuff.
Okay, now we bump in man.
Oh, okay.
That's different.
That is a completely new quality to the song now.
It almost feels like a little bit cartoony kind of fantastical.
What is this becoming after all that? What the hell is this?
Is this like a joke boss? This feels unserious.
We got like the chip tune stuff building in here too. Like Huh?
What?
What is this?
I'm My flabvers are gasted.
guitar.
Why the guitar?
Like now this just sounds like a Grant Kirk Hope Banjo Kazouie theme.
What is this?
You know, in some ways it kind of reminds me of Millie a little bit in like the childlike wonder aspect of this part.
Like I wouldn't put it against them to put out something like this.
Is that Was that the Infinity Gauntlet?
Am I going insane?
Was this a joke, boss? It feels silly.
Like the song individually, all the parts are good.
Together, I am at a massive loss. Like it's just it goes from this like creepy like haunted sound leaning into that and then transitions into this Banjo Kazouie goofy goober [ __ ] at the end and it feels kind of unserious. I I don't know if I'm just missing the context maybe.
But like again individually they're great but like together I'm kind of confused why. Okay, so I'm the first to admit when I'm a little bit confused. I do not think that this song is bad in any way, or rather I should say songs.
They're definitely separate ideas, but that's kind of why I ended up confused with it because I'm so used to bosses being consistent in their stories, if nothing else, with the music. Like the the theme that started is this dark kind of childlike spooky creepy sort of sound and it's like that makes sense given what we're looking at, the creature that this is. Mind you, I do not know anything as far as the lore of this character, the story, none of that. So, like, if there's stuff I'm missing here, that is very 100% possible. But, it's weird that it started with this creepy sound and then seemingly had a completely different energy for the second part. And that was very weird, too, because the way it was built was like, "Oh, we're going to be staying in this creepy energy." And even if it did become something a little bit more proud and bright, it wouldn't necessarily have gone the route of completely turning itself off and restarting from a completely new idea in a new direction.
That's unsettling in the wrong way for me when a song that is supposed to retain and connect to one character's personality and concept kind of just gets seemingly thrown out the window.
Now, there are places where this can work, and I think that this is one of those cases where it's supposed to work.
But again, given the lack of knowledge I have, I'm kind of struck with a confusion on this one more than anything because I don't get what the song was supposed to be doing between the first and second parts. I can hear the the correlation between the second and third parts for sure. like the energy there is a lot more close and the general musical direction is a lot more similar even with like the guitar coming in. That was a weird addition, but then it started to make sense, you know, but the first part is seemingly completely musically separate from the rest of what happened. And I I don't know how I feel about that. I don't think that this is the win everyone was hoping it was going to be for me when people were like, "Hey, you should listen to this. It's super good." Because I've seen nothing but praise on this. I had to look in the comments of that video because I was that baffled by what I heard and going, "Is this a joke character?" I had to like have the answers there. And everyone was just like, "This makes so much sense for this character." And that's where I was like, "Maybe I'm just missing something." Because for me, the first part made sense for the character, but then it completely threw away the expectations of what it was to become something musically unrelated entirely.
I do not understand where that second part of the song was supposed to connect to the first one at all. Like, and that's why I'm kind of bummed because even if there was a little bit more of a call back rather than just that one vocal line, I would be a little bit more impressed. But like for the vocal line thing I was mentioning, pretty much all we get that calls back to that is which is kind of neat in its own right because that's a C and that is a B diminished. And usually those two aren't like far away from being played. They're within the same key of C. I don't think that's the key that we're actually playing in any of these songs, but it does land in those. So, it's not like they're unrelated, but having that separation works surprisingly well. You know, like for that step down, as close as they are, it actually works musically very well. But that's the only part to me that really connected back to the original theme that was that darker, creepier tone. And not saying I was expecting it all to be creepy. It's just the fact that it seemed to stop entirely. And I feel like there was a cut scene or something that might have answered some of why that is or again just the the creature itself, whatever's going on there. And of course, I saw that transformation at the beginning, so I'm assuming that this is not a 100% voluntary situation that this character is in, and she's more or less a vessel for something else, but that's just me guessing, you know. But again, musically, as good as these are individually, I feel like the first is completely different from the second and third, and I cannot really get why those would be there thematically. I I again know I'm probably missing something.
I'll have to say that every 5 seconds because that's it's frustrating for me as the guy who does this all the time to hear a song and be like, man, I I'm hoping that this is going to be really good because people really want me to get to this. and then being kind of disappointed. I I'm more confused, I think, than disappointed with this one because again, individually, they're good. And the second and third parts do connect very well, but that first part to the second part really seems like I missed a chapter in the book is more what's happening for me. And I feel like that is the byproduct of me not knowing the game, not knowing the characters, not knowing what to expect out of whatever is happening here. But from the outside looking in as I do, that aggressive of a change from that creepiness in the first part to that like brighter sound is kind of pointedly unnecessary. They could have bridged it better with something else in the center there. I think that final part makes sense for like the the big win sort of energy it has to it, you know, and the first part makes sense for the tragedy that's there. You can feel the vocals in that one screaming out. I really like what it was doing there, but that middle section is the ugly weird middle child that nobody wants to play with on the playground cuz it's like, what the [ __ ] are you doing there? I don't know how to feel about that part. I feel like there would be a better composition in general that would glue the first and third parts together rather than whatever happened here and just cutting it off like full blood supply cut, nothing between it is now a new thing. that just doesn't feel good to me. It doesn't feel natural. It doesn't feel like it's flowing well. It doesn't again that consistency is lost and I need that for a song that is supposed to be reminiscent of the same character's story. And again, my only guess here is that I'm missing something and like they shifted focus from that creature you were fighting to someone or something else. Obviously, there's like the main character in there and that's what it shifted to, but it should still be reflecting the boss you're fighting. It still is a part of that story. So, I'm at a loss trying to figure out what the point of having that completely thrown away aside from that little D like that's the only part that seemingly comes back. And I just I don't know. I I really don't know. This is weird because beautiful composition as they always have. very interesting in its sound design, especially in the beginning. The the latter ones less so. I think that that was a little bit more elementary in that way. It was just a little bit more simplified. Not bad, just different. But again, that's kind of my whole crux with this song because I was struck with that confusion of I was interested in whatever was going on in the very beginning and wondering how they were going to connect that to the finale at the end where obviously inevitably the main character would win. That's how these things work. But then it just kind of seemed to forget about that sound and separated this new thing that focused on something entirely new. And I do not understand why that would be the case. Again, I feel like the middle child syndrome of this song would be a better bridge, but I'm not sure what the point is. I feel like again, they just threw away the entire sound of the original and they just went for a completely different tone. I'm I I always hate having negative opinions of things like this because it's like I want to like these, but once in a while there is a song that just does something nonsensical that I can't seem to wrap my brain around. And in this case, yes, probably again mentioning it is due to me missing some context information.
But musically, I feel like they just kind of missed the mark with that transition and just shutting it out and doing something different. It's almost like a new composer came in and decided, "Nah, we're doing this now." And again, while it's good on its own, and the first part is good on its own as a unit, as a three-part story, it's it's like starting the first Harry Potter and then suddenly finishing off with Half Blood Prince and the rest of it. But as a result, I think that's about all I have to say on this one. It ended up being more confusing to me than interesting to the point where I didn't even really want to dig into the music theory on this one because aside from the little bit that I mentioned, that little motif in there, there wasn't much consistency to it. So, it would be like trying to break down and make sense of two to three different songs and largely not really sharing much else about them and why those connect and why that's cool. Because while there are interesting elements for each one, individually they were a little bit too short to do anything with on their own and have any real staying power, which is a bummer because I loved where that first part was going. And I like where the last part ended. But everything else just kind of left me in a days of why am I here? And I guess that's about all I got to say on this one. I'm sure a lot of you guys are going to be bummed because I don't have much to say on this one aside from as much as I've been yapping, but it's all been just like deflection of why I don't really care for this one. I'm completely open to the reality that I did miss something. So, if you want to clarify what I missed because I didn't get that out of the comments I had read. It was just, wow, I really like this and kind of glazing to be honest. And I wonder if that's the problem. I wonder if people were just glazing it in the comments as they tend to do and are just like, "This is brilliant." But maybe it does really relate to this character in a way that I am completely unprivy to. And if that's the case, explain down below. I would love to learn what I'm missing here, but I just don't know. And as is, it's probably the weakest Hawkeye song I think I've ever heard to be honest with you. But I think I'm done yapping for this one. So, thank you all very much for watching. If you want me to get to something else from Hawkeye Star Rail, maybe something that I won't tear apart for 10 to 15 minutes, then drop in the comments below and I will do my best as always to get to those. Or if you don't want to do any of that, maybe just want to follow me and support me for more stuff coming in the future, you know how to do all that. And I'll see all of you in the next video. Goodbye.
