P.Y.T. Piano TutorialHinzugefügt:
Hey, hey, hey.
What's going on, YouTube? It's your boy Craigzilla coming at you with another piano tutorial. Today, I'm breaking down PYT by Michael Jackson. Uh, before we get started, there'll be a link in the description to a video of me just playing through the whole thing with the backing track. Uh, so you can kind of hear how my chords would fit with like the drums, bass, vocals, and guitar.
Okay. Um, but without further ado, let's get right into it. The song starts off uh with this intro.
Right. And then okay, so those chords for the intro are they might seem kind of weird. There's no bass really here for this part of the song. So these chords might seem kind of like what are they or kind of mysterious, but they're just rootless voicings of the chords that are coming in the verse. Right? So I think of this chord, this first chord as almost like a B minor 9, even though there's no root.
Um, you know, there's no root. So we've got A, Csharp, D, and Fsharp, right? That's your first chord.
Then we just move our thumb from A down to G sharp to give us uh you know this chord which is a rootless E13. So G sharp C sharp D and F sharp there. Then this chord looks kind of like a B minor 7 and it's a rootless G major 9.
Okay. Um, so you've got Fsharp, A, B, and D.
And then the last chord, we got B, C sharp, and E. And this is going to be kind of like a rootless, well, not really rootless, I guess, but A over B would be that chord during the verse, right? But for the intro, we're playing it like this. So those four chords, you do them twice.
All right.
And then the verse comes in.
Okay. So, for the verse, you're kind of doing those same chords. So the the chords for the verse are basically going to be like B minor 9 to E 13, G major 9, and A over B. Right?
But the bass isn't just doing the root notes. It's doing this kind of cool baseline, right?
Now, I will say this. Um, every time I've played this song, I've never had a need to play the baseline in my left hand. I've always done this song like with a bass player, right? So, I think the first part of this video, I'll kind of just break down I'll give you the root notes and stuff, but I'll break down the chords and then maybe later on towards the end of the video, I'll talk more about the bass, right? for those that are interested. But on the on the recording on the record, that bass is going down going on down there and the chords are kind of bouncing on the upbeats almost like a reggae thing, right? But it's really just this one chord. Like there's when I do it, I double the chords, right? I play them like this just because I want to use both my hands. Um, but when you listen to the record, it almost sounds like it's just as if it's one hand, right? And there's so many layers of like analog synth stuff that you know, it still sounds full, but the actual chord that's being played that's bouncing It sounds like it's just one hand playing it, right? Um, so I like to use both. I like to double up the chord. So I'll play them the same chord in both hands, right?
Okay. And I'm, like I said, I'm bouncing them. So it be 1 2 3 4 1 and 2 and 3 and four and one and two. Right.
Now the each chord gets four. You play each chord four times, right? All on those upbeats.
One and two and three and four and one and two and three and four.
Except the last chord.
you only play it three times. The other ones you play, so that A over B, you only hit it three times. The other ones you each hit four times.
And so you'll play that progression twice and then it goes into the pre chorus. Um, which would sound something like, you know, All right.
Okay. And then, right, we'll get all we'll get there in a minute. Um, but again, for the pre chorus, it's it sounds like it's just a one one hand playing the chords. The harmony is right here. It's, you know, So, I like to double this as well, except maybe for that last chord, right?
So anyways, the chords are basically G major 9 E over F sharp, make it a F sharp 7, and then A over B to B7.
Back to G major 9, E over F sharp, F sharp 7. Now C over D and then B7 sharp five sharp nine, right? That's like the pre chorus. And so you could actually play it like that how I just did it. If you're by yourself and you just kind of wanted to have that root note down there, that's fine.
But like I said, every time I've done this song on a gig, there's always a bass player, right? So you don't want to get in the way of the bass player. So like I said, I'll double up the chords.
So for my G major 9, I'll play it like this.
For the E over F sharp, I'll just play an E major, right? And then F sharp 7.
Then for the A over B, I'm just playing A here. And then make it a B7 like that.
And then uh do it again. G major 9, E over F sharp, F sharp 7. And for the C over D.
I'll just play C major up here. And for that last chord, I'll actually come down here and play it right on the recording on the album. It sounds like it's just this right. Um, again, it's like the harmonies kind of all like down here on the keyboard. There's not really two two hands doing it, right?
Um, but because I'm about to come down here and for the chorus, right, I like to play that last chord down here. Um, like this.
And then the chorus comes, right?
So, this is what I would Play for the chorus.
>> Right.
Okay. So the chorus is just E minor 7.
You hit it twice when it says love you want to love you. And then PYT PyT for PYT I'm playing D major with G in the bass, right?
It almost sounds like a G major 9.
There's no B there though, right?
At least not that I can hear.
So, and then for the last chord, what I'm playing here is a F sharp minor, you know, with A in the bass. So, you know, on the album, on the recording, it sounds almost like it's just a regular A major.
So to me it doesn't quite sound right when I do it that way. And I think the reason I choose to play that F# minor instead uh is because of that synth line.
Right.
Um that F sharp in that line.
It kind of lines up with that A major chord. So like I'm hearing the the six of the chord in there and I think it's coming from that synth line which you could play that by all means if you want to split the board or if you got two keyboards or whatever the line it's kind of a key line.
All right. Um but usually I don't play the line. And I just play it. I just keep that F sharp in the chord just to kind of fulfill that harmonic uh presence of that note there. Right?
So, okay, you do that twice and then then we go G major twice and then uh D over F sharp once.
Okay. And then A over B and make it a B7.
And that progression happens twice. So the second time around, same thing as the first.
All right.
The only difference is nowhere.
Now we do this thing to get us back to the second verse where we take a G major 7 over A. All right.
Then we move this D down to a C sharp to make it a A13.
Um, now if I'm on a gig and I'm playing with the bass player, I'll come up here and do it anywhere you want to go, right?
Because I'm about to be up here for the verse, right?
So I'll come up here for that um those two chords. All right.
So anyways, after that, that's most of the song. Everything but the bridge. Right. So once we turn that around, another verse, right? Verse goes on. pre chorus, second pre chorus comes and then another chorus and then after that chorus we go into this bridge, right? So it' be and then we're going into the bridge.
This is all guitars on the record.
And then and you back into the chorus.
Okay. So, that bridge, like I said, it's all guitars on the recording. I don't think there's any keys there. But if you're playing this in a band, you know, you want to participate here on the bridge, too, right? So, what I'll usually play, I'll just do octaves. And it starts with a chromatic uh you know up from Fsharp to A. So but Fsharp Gsharp A right D and then okay A A B flat B be the second move there. So, oh, and if you don't have a guitar player, you could do this A and D, this fourth here, and then, you know, with your pitch bend wheel, bend it up to uh it'll bend up to this B and E, and then back down. So, you know what I mean? You can just hit that little thing in between. So, now watch this.
Okay. So, after you do the the little walk up thing, F# sharp chromatic to A and then A up to B, you do that twice.
And then there's this little walk down little walk down thing here where where you start start with a major pretty young E over G sharp thing. You land on Fsharp 7 sus 4. I'm just playing it like that.
So pretty young, right? Pretty young.
And then so after we do that little walk down to the F# sus, now we're just going, we're just doing that second walk up thing we did before.
Right. We do it four times.
Huh?
And then we come in, right? So after that, after we're done with the little A, right, thing, we do that four times, we'll go, we're just doing that same move from the um chorus where we start on G, hit it twice, and then hit on the D major with F sharp in the bass once. So, right, we land on that A over B and make it a B7.
And then you're good. You're golden.
That's the whole song. Because after that, you're back into the chorus, right?
And that takes you to the to the end of the song.
How do you end it?
Good question.
Let's see.
I might go maybe end it like that. I don't know. It fades out on the record, so it's kind of up to you. But I might I might might end it like that, I think. Um, so anyways, that's the chords. That's like exactly how I would do it on a gig, you know, to not interfere with the bass player. Now, if you're just curious, you know, I was kind of debating whether or not to include some of the stuff about the baseline in the video, and I thought, well, let me just give people the chords up front because a lot of people are probably just, hey, I got a gig coming up. We want to do this song. Let me figure it out real quick. just give me the chords, you know, and then there might be some people who are like, well, kind of want to know what the bass is doing, too. So, or maybe you're just curious what's going on or maybe you need to play the bass. Like I said, I've never needed to, but maybe you do. So, okay. So, from this point on in the video, I'm just going to be talking about the bass. Um, and like I said, there's no bass in the intro. So, I'm just going to I think what I'll do, I'll play through the whole verse, pre chorus, and chorus with the left hand bass, and then I'll kind of break it down section by section.
Heat.
Heat.
Okay. So, that's the verse, pre chorus, and chorus with the left hand bass. Um, so it's mostly not too bad. It the verse gets a little tricky, right? So, let me just I guess start with the verse, right?
We're walking up BB C sharp D then E D and here's where it gets tricky E. We're going to roll off of this E, hit this F sharp twice really quick and then come down to this B. So, okay. It's not so bad when I'm just doing it with my left hand, but when I try to do it with the chords, gets a little hairy, right? So, okay.
Uh, you while if you're going to be doing the chords with this, you change your chord when you go back down to this D here.
right here. Right.
Okay.
See if I can do it.
Right. And then um when you get to the G major 9 G A B and then B A B, right?
And you'll change your chord when you get to that uh back when you go back down to that A in your left hand. So on that one right and then when you get to the uh pre chorus You play your G major 9 and in your left hand G A B A G, right?
Hit that F sharp. When you get to the E over F sharp, you hit this low F sharp twice.
And when you come up to hit that octave is when you change the chord. So, okay. And then for your A over B.
So, but you'll play the A with A over B with that first and then the chord the chord changes to the B7 before you go back to your left hand there. So, okay. And we do it again.
So the for the C over D hit your chord with your bass there and then your B7 sharp five sharp N your chord comes in a little bit before the bass gets there. Right. So okay. And then we're in the chorus.
This is simple.
We're just walking it up. So, E E, we hit the F sharp on our way to the G, right?
Pretty self-explanatory here. And then, right, we're just hitting the root notes. And then so your your bass rhythm with those the A over B chord and the B7 it's a little different than we did it before. So you'll hit the chord with the bass and again your chords hit with your bass there. So that makes sense. Right.
And then actually that wasn't quite it. So the chord changes just a little bit before you go back to that bass. So the but the bass is B A A G A A G A. Right.
And you're back in the verse.
Okay. Um and then I guess for the bridge, if you're going to do the bass, you could just do what we did. I mean, we right. Oh, by the way, I got this thing split. So, bass is from here down. Synth base and keys are from this F sharp up. Um, but yeah, I guess for the for the uh bridge, if you wanted to just hit the root notes down there, right?
I think that'd be fine.
That's probably what I would do, right? Um, so yeah, that's that's a little bit of the baseline there. Um, like I said, I've never had to do it.
Uh, and it is kind of difficult to syncopate it. Um, but I just thought it was such a cool baseline that I wanted to learn it and thought I should, you know, talk about it at least a little bit in this video. So, hopefully that helped somebody out.
