Strong to severe storms possible Monday evening, Candian wildfire smoke returns Tuesday

[00:00:12]Big week and though look at this. That's not terrible. Especially if you compare it to last year when we saw some very heavy rainfall. Was not a pleasant big experience, but I look a little bit better and then we can compare to again what we saw last year. Now today though, not so great weather wise. We do have that chance for some severe weather.

[00:00:32]First Alert day here from Monday evening. Really we're talking I'd say 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. through the evening into the early overnight hours is when we expect storms to move through. Could see some severe storms including damaging winds and even destructive winds. A few tornadoes, large hail, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding risk will be on the table as well. We have a level three risk here north of I-80, level two along and south of I-80, but it doesn't matter really anywhere you go here in the KWQC viewing area that threat's going to be on the table. Right now we're watching this arc of activity here moving through southeast Minnesota.

[00:01:07]Eventually it's going to start doing one of these and dive a little bit further to the south. And if it holds together, could bring some heavy rainfall, gusty winds, lots of lightning too here in the morning to mid-morning hours.

[00:01:18]Here's the breakdown. A few tornadoes are possible, especially here again from Sterling, I'd say through the Quad Cities, Muscatine, and to the north where that darker purple is. That's where we could see some tornadoes. Can't rule out maybe a strong tornado, especially north of Highway 30, but the big threat for our area and I would say what is the most widespread threat is going to be that potential for some damaging winds to destructive winds that may exceed 75 mph, even higher than that on some of those gusts, especially in that outlined area there in the darker brown. So that is what we're concerned with here. It's all got to do with the heat and humidity that we expect today.

[00:01:54]It's going to be a real driving force here for that thunderstorm potential.

[00:01:58]We're going to be really maxed out here on those what we call the cape or the thunderstorm energy. And you can also see here too, we got that turning wind.

[00:02:06]We call it wind shear turning direction with height. Increase in speed with height. So, we'll have an environment that's well sheared. So, as storms develop, they could spin and that's going to be one of the concerns that we watch for. Here's some of that morning activity it's showing there a little displaced on time, but we get into the afternoon, look at that. We could Zach Truck's going pretty pretty intense here with those temperatures. 94° is what it's saying, but we'll get a line of storms to fill in. I think this whole thing is going to be connected. I think we'll see one big line of thunderstorms that could be severe. 7:00 p.m. is that time frame.

[00:02:39]That'll slice through the area. We will clear out. But, once that front moves in, it's going to usher in another little bout of smoke as we head into the morning hours, especially tomorrow morning. So, definitely get ready for that. Another day with air quality issues. Temperatures today again starting off the morning warm and a little bit muggy, but definitely hot and humid once we get to the afternoon.

[00:02:58]We'll watch those storm chances. As we get further into the week, temperatures not going to be bad here Tuesday into Wednesday. Look at Wednesday, 78°. But, we incrementally start to increase those temps as we get into the latter half of the week into the weekend. Big day, Saturday, looking pretty nice, 85°.
