[00:29:40]one of our radio personalities here at the Spear Lake Dakota Nation does an excellent job and I believe he's been helping out in the communities during our events doing helping us in our health promotion.

[00:30:22]I wanted to uh share a little history about traditional dancing.

[00:30:31]You know for since the early '7s we used to travel here for Fort Totten days and in those days the POW committee they had they paid 10 places out in all of the categories and they put up $1,500 before anybody else did in this area.

[00:31:02]And there was no casinos back then.

[00:31:06]And the Powow Committee raised money all year long to put on that celebration.

[00:31:12]And they fed us rations when we at our camps.

[00:31:18]And a lot of dancers that I danced with back that time are all gone now.

[00:31:25]Now I'm dancing with their sons and grandsons.

[00:31:30]That victory dance song that was sung at the Veterans Day pow in Cisetin, South Dakota some years ago.

[00:31:44]They sang those started to sing those victory dance songs.

[00:31:49]I looked around and nobody knew how to dance to them.

[00:31:55]So, I started dancing the way you're supposed to to each one of those songs.

[00:32:01]When I got done, people were laughing at me. They made fun of me for dancing the way I was.

[00:32:12]One of the original porcupine singers, Philip Wright, was there and uh he was up on the announcer stand with his cane and he talked.

[00:32:27]He said uh I watched all you dancers make fun of uh Terry. He said, "Well, he danced those songs."

[00:32:37]He said, "But that's the first time in 30ome years that I seen those dances done the way they're supposed to be done."

[00:32:47]Instead of making fun of him, you guys should be learning, learning something.

[00:32:55]And especially you know our young people that are watching around the arena our way of life or they call this way of dancing back in the old days lot style dancing that's what they say and they taught us a lot of things old dancers about traditional dancing now I watch on Facebook and I see all the things that you're not supposed to do as a traditional dancer.

[00:33:28]Those are the guys that are winning today.

[00:33:32]So, our tradition is slipping away from us little by little.

[00:33:38]Last weekend and I went to Madison, Wisconsin for one day pow.

[00:33:44]Our final song was a change up song.

[00:33:48]And this group, I'm not going to say their name, but they sang a song for us, and it was a men's fancy dance trick song, and it was made by Redders singers and recorded back in the 70s.

[00:34:04]But these young singers didn't know, so they just decided to sing that kind of song for us.

[00:34:13]But each one of these dances, there are songs that go with them.

[00:34:22]the way it's supposed to be done today. You don't hear those songs.

[00:34:29]Everybody wants to make new songs and they forget about the old ways.

[00:34:35]It's good to make something new, but don't let go of the past.

[00:34:41]I just wanted to share a little bit and say thank you to listening to me here this afternoon.

[00:37:14]Jolie Kavanaaugh has been representing the Spear Lake tribe as our traveling princess.

[00:37:20]She's 16 years old. She's a sophomore here in Devil's Lake High School. She's the granddaughter of the late Robert Kavanaaugh senior, Blaine Anderson, Betty Smith, Tammy for the daughter of Reggie Kavanaaugh and Hannah Anderson.

[00:37:37]Jolie has traveled to many paws with her family to represent the Spear Lake Dakota nation while being a traveling princess.

[00:37:47]Some of the paws she's attended over this past year has been White Shield North Dakota, Bcourt, North Dakota, Shakapei, United Tribes, Bismar, Siston, Prairie Island, Mandere, and Grand Forks. She's also attended many community day powals where she has had specials to give back to the community.

[00:38:11]She feels an it's been an honor to her and her family to be a traveling PR princess and representing Spirit Lake nation. Jolie and a family are looking forward to the summer paws where she'll have an opportunity to continue to represent our tribe.

[00:38:28]We are thankful for this Dakota way of life and want to give thanks by giving back here today.

[00:38:34]We want to thank the family for supporting her throughout these travels and for being with her and helping to not only support her in the travels but to represent our nation as well.
