In 1978, Soviet scientist Anatoli Bugorski became the only human to survive being struck by a proton beam moving near the speed of light, which passed through his skull and burned through the left side of his brain, causing paralysis of his left face and complete hearing loss in one ear, demonstrating that even extreme radiation exposure can sometimes be survived with significant but not fatal consequences.

The Man Hit by a Proton Beam (Anatoli Bugorski)Added:
In 1978, a proton beam moving near the speed of light passed through a scientist's skull. It burned straight through the left side of his brain. No one was supposed to survive that, but Anatoli Bugorski did. The left side of his face became paralyzed. He lost hearing in one ear completely, but he is still the only human who lived through it.
