Amputees often experience significant confidence challenges following their amputation, particularly after events like falls that can damage prosthetic limbs. Managing these challenges requires developing adaptive strategies, including pacing activities based on daily physical capacity, listening to one's body, and accepting that some days will be more challenging than others. The journey involves learning to balance activity levels to prevent complications while maintaining an active lifestyle, with the understanding that confidence can be rebuilt through gradual, sustainable engagement with physical activities.

Fun times in Chichester - Cathedral, Roman Walls & The Hard Truth of Will's Confidence as an AmputeeAdded:
Grab some crackers. [music] This is going to be cheesy. Jump [singing] on board with gonk and moody. Just three legs, but that's more roomy. Amput and a blonde on [music] a journey. Tips and tricks that you might find handy. Like and subscribe if you're feeling [singing] friendly. Chat and stuff and it might be witty, but I don't really know how to finish this diddy. So, let's just go.
>> [music] >> So, so far, what do you think of Chucha?
>> I think it's marvelous.
>> Well, apart from what we had that horrible horrible experience in Tesco, >> that was just one man.
>> Yes. So, we need >> We gave him short shift.
>> We need the people of Chichester to re >> restore our faith.
>> No, no, no. Well, it would be nice if they do, but it's up to them how they want to be in it. But >> yeah, >> but it would Yeah, be nice if they were all like, >> "Yeah, I want to be able to tell everybody that Chicha is a wonderful place to come and everyone's super friendly."
>> Well, I think that will be the case with the And hopefully we'll say the people were lovely, but we might say Ch is lovely. People are a bit odd.
>> Let's hope. [laughter] Let's see.
>> Right. Let's see where we need to go.
You are >> here >> here.
>> And we want to go there and there >> to the shops.
>> If we walk if we walk down North Street and then head for that and then we can >> and then tomorrow >> walk all the way around the city wall.
>> Yeah.
>> I'm looking forward to that. That'll be nice.
>> All right.
>> Are you?
>> Yes.
Under the underpass then?
>> I love an underpass.
>> Do you?
>> Yeah.
>> Well, I don't know. It depends who's in there.
Ain't >> nobody going to bother us, >> huh?
>> Very clean. Doesn't smell of weed either, >> actually. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Good start.
>> Very good start.
>> Looks nice. Boardwalk Cafe. It >> does. Yeah.
See what the property prices are here.
Oh, that's nice.
>> That is nice.
>> That one. Yeah, that. That's lovely, isn't it?
>> Yeah. Or that one.
Or that one.
>> Yeah, that'd be my pick.
Sorry.
lovely, helpful lady in the RSPCA charity shop.
>> Yes.
>> Told us all about the cathedral, which we are in the right direction for. And um apparently they've got peragan forkins breeding there, which I know that >> one up on our swans, isn't it?
>> No.
>> No. [laughter] >> Or our pigeons.
>> Definitely not our pigeons.
Is that the cathedral down there?
>> Go check it.
>> Thank you.
>> I tell you what'll be interesting.
>> Lunch prethe the dinner.
>> If I get a backpack.
>> Sorry.
>> It'll be interesting if I get a backpack today.
>> Why?
>> Cuz I can feel this bag is pulling me like that.
>> Is it?
>> Yeah, it is.
>> But you do carry a lot of stuff. I might even be able to feel a bit of a >> might even be able to feel a little bit of a twinge coming on.
>> That looks like a bloom and brilliant shop, >> doesn't it? We both love a music shop.
>> Yeah, >> I have an array of array of guitars and musical instruments.
>> I can smell dope.
>> I can't today. I normally think.
>> Okay, let's see if that What is that?
Who's that?
>> Oh, I can now.
Priaryy Park.
>> What I need to do is keep switching my bag around to balance up my shield. No, I don't think that is the cathedral.
>> No, this is Pirate [laughter] Park.
>> Oh, nice little calf there.
>> Oh, yeah.
[music] [music] Hello.
Oh, he's going to beat us. Oh.
>> Oh, interesting. The display.
>> He's a cheeky little chappie, isn't he?
>> Oh, I've never seen that before. Is he playing or attacking?
>> No idea, but I like it.
He's a brilliant little fella.
>> Yeah.
>> I've never seen that behavior before.
>> I haven't >> almost like So a bit cat-like, wasn't it?
>> Yeah. All right. So, this is the guild hall.
Medieval building.
Uh stuff >> stuff. Is that good? Is that your historic tour done? [laughter] Well, >> historic building.
>> Yeah. If you'd like if you'd like more details, pause here and you can have a good read.
>> Oh, god. Cop out again. [laughter] >> Well, some people like to find out these things for themselves, don't they?
>> Yeah, I agree.
>> So, look at what's here and then come and find out about it.
>> Yes. So, in many ways, you're doing the viewers a favor.
>> I am. Oh, >> you just keep giving, don't you?
>> Yes.
>> [music] [music] >> And there's the city wall that we'll walk around hopefully tomorrow.
That looks nice.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> So far, this is lovely. It's all pedestrianized.
>> Pedestrianized. Pedestri >> pedestrianized.
>> Yeah, >> I think that's right.
>> With lots of lovely independent shops.
>> Yeah.
>> What? Lots of stuff we're walking by that I want to go and have a look in.
[music] [music] >> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Heat. Heat.
>> [music] >> Cup of tea. cup of tea >> in the cloysters. Was it?
>> It was >> around here.
>> Oh, it's nice. Sun's warming up.
>> Oh, it is.
>> It's not cold. [laughter] >> It's really cold over there.
>> I should have had the foresight to invest in a hat today.
>> Well, that you have hundreds of hats.
>> Wow. Nobody made me bring one.
[laughter] >> That was wonderful.
>> That was really really >> nice. Highly recommend that as a visit.
>> Yeah, >> it's it's completely free. We made a donation and we're trying to spend money here.
>> So, we bought some stuff from the gift shop. Um, and we're gonna go and get a cup of tea to try and instead of supporting Costa, we're going to support the cathedral.
>> Yes.
>> Got coffee and a tea.
>> Thank you.
>> And half a jacket potato each with different fillings.
And just in case a packet until they had a different flavor. Sussex crisp.
>> See what are they?
>> I'm not I don't need these but they're beef.
>> They have to be tried.
>> Did you enjoy your jacket potato?
>> I did. Yeah. It was lovely. Really lovely.
>> Did you?
>> I did.
>> Good filling.
>> Good filling. Excellent filling.
So, we're now going to find the bishop's palace.
>> Bishops do pretty well, don't they?
>> They seem to do very well. Yeah.
>> I'm going to guess that way, Tom.
>> Waterway.
>> Waterway.
away.
>> Oh, that nice.
>> Okay, we had to abandon the Bishop's Palace Garden because it's full of school children.
>> Yeah, maybe we must have called it smack on lunch time, didn't we? Yeah, >> they're all enjoying a lovely lunch.
It's lovely. It's sort of tulips and blossom and all the joys of spring.
So, we've just stopped in this pub so Wil can swap his bags over and we've discovered the most sticky floor since 1984.
We're on our way to the Novia Museum and we're walking down a street called Wool Staplers Street. And so I've just asked Tanya, does she have any reference for stapler or staple and wool?
>> Not together. No.
>> Well, and I think I know what it means, but I'm not 100% sure.
>> What do you think it means? So in my many and fairy career, one of the was obviously as a shepherd or at least working for a bit on a sheep farm. And one of the things I had to do was roll fleeces during shearing, which is really hard work. And what I think a staple is in relation to wool is the depth of the fleece from the back of the sheep to the tip of the wool. I haven't googled this yet, but I will shortly.
Um, so yeah, that's what I think a stapler is in wall terms.
>> Very good.
>> I could be wrong.
>> But why it would be called staplers, I don't know. Cuz that seems like an action, doesn't it?
>> Yes.
>> Perhaps it's the measurer of the fleece.
I don't know.
>> So, the Novium Museum. Why did we need to come here? Apart from why didn't we?
>> Apart from it being a museum, why did we? Uh, I think it was recommended to us by the really helpful ladies at the um Roman Villa Palace place.
>> Um, I can't remember why though. But I mean, a museum is always a worth a lookie, isn't it?
>> Yes.
>> And it's free entry as well.
>> Even better.
>> And it's open, I suppose.
What floor are we on today?
>> We're going to space.
>> Try number two.
>> Number two, please.
>> We should say that we're doing this a bit of a whistle stop tour. And we've just bumped into two viewers who just said their names were, of course, before I forget. John and Sue.
So, day two of our tour and we've stumbled across a market.
>> Farmers market.
>> Farmers market.
>> So, it's a Friday, so maybe every Friday, >> I think. So, yeah.
And we're also going to do the Roman wall walk. [laughter] >> So you could do it all in one day, but to make it leisurely and to take everything in.
>> And I think to say that you could do it all in one day >> is possibly not true as well because there's there's a lot to see here, isn't there? Yeah.
>> So, you know, we've done what we want to do in one day and a bit, but you could spend a long time mooching about here and taking your time. We don't take our time really.
>> So, we're going to be starting our Roman Wall walk, which goes all the way around the outside of the city from the Bishop's Palace Gardens entrance, which we think >> maybe down here.
>> Maybe down [laughter] here.
>> It was yesterday.
>> It was yesterday.
And there we think are the stairs.
>> We are winging this slightly, aren't we?
>> Totally.
>> So we as you come out as you approach the Bishop's Palace Gardens from the cloysters, we think you come through this little art train and hook a right left >> and go up these stairs.
We hope.
Okay, we're not going to race around here, but just out of interest, we see roughly how long it takes us amling along.
It's 1.2 mi, isn't it?
>> Yeah.
Heat.
Heat. [music] >> [music] >> Chichister have definitely got it set up for cyclists and pedestrians over >> Yeah.
>> vehicles, haven't they?
>> Yeah. When you're when you're a vehicularist, >> it's um I I find it a little bit annoying, but as a pedestrian, it's flipping brilliant, isn't it?
>> Right. North Walls.
[music] >> It's not particularly [music] well signposted.
>> No, it would have been Romans, [laughter] >> but we think we found the next bit.
>> Yes, we've discovered it.
>> Not us. Well, with the help of other people if it's the right place >> and true to form in that short period of time before we record the last bit to this bit, we did get lost. [laughter] >> So that's got to be, isn't it?
>> Surely it's a wall.
>> It's Roman origin.
[music] We obviously know that this to my side isn't the Roman wall necessarily. Could be part of it for all we know. Uh but we're walking on top of the Roman walls, we believe.
>> For any amputees that are following us, how is your leg today?
>> Oh, actually, yes. Uh today it's early in the morningish still and it's okay.
But I've been having for the first time ever in being an amput which is only since 2018.
Um I had my fall if you follow us you know I fell over back just after Christmas I think and that re and it was a mechanism failure on my leg. Uh and I have to acknowledge that it's damaged my confidence. So my superpower was my confidence. It was almost like nothing could beat me. I was like super confident and fatigue and uh >> that goes for both of us actually.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. because that >> you're worried about before [clears throat and laughter] me.
>> Yeah. It was really scary cuz I couldn't do anything to help you. I couldn't get you up and so it's knocked my confidence that if you're out on your own, what what if you >> What if you Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> So, yeah. So, that's been a bit of a downer and my leg. So, now I'm going through So, it's a bit of a confidence issue and discomfort. So, I'd normally be badgering my limb center for different discomfort reasons and, you know, down there and they'd be tweaking it all for me, but I've sort of lost confidence in the whole thing and uh not in the lovely people, but in just in the whole thing and um so I'm probably neglecting my my the fitment of my leg >> squeaking now, isn't it? Every step. Uh because it's I don't want to upset the apple cart cuz the last time I upset the apple cart, I ended up face first and then about a week after after they repaired it almost face first again.
>> Yeah.
>> Um so yeah. So so anyway, sorry get back to what I said. Um I'm getting good and bad days now. I'm sort of now one of those people. Oh, today's a good day. So right now it's really good day, but I'm getting bad days where we haven't done a lot and it it's got in my head a bit. So couple of weeks ago for about a week I was feeling pretty I would say low but really my answer would be peed off um with the whole thing and we we I wasn't doing much was I >> no >> I was a bit sad so I did my day's work and then >> slumped along. I'm back on it a little bit now. Um >> yeah it's amazing what a a bit of a kick up the pants in a non good way can how it can knock you back and this has definitely knocked me back.
That's where we just came off the wall down this little street here and pick it up again here.
Okay.
>> Yep.
Oh, had we paid closer attention.
>> Oh, >> okay.
>> I see. I didn't know.
>> That's nice.
>> Yeah. Took you a while to notice it then.
>> Yeah.
>> Was been aware of that all the way.
[laughter] >> Ah, here we go. So, now we're in Priaryy Park.
>> Yeah. Oh, this is nice.
>> I like the fact they leave it all a little bit rustic to be honest.
>> It's nice.
>> We've just missed all the daffodils.
>> Yeah. I'm becoming more and more of a chister fan.
[music] >> A lovely bowling green there.
>> Oh, that is nice.
That's something I'd like to try. Never done it, but I like the look of it.
Well, >> because it's all neat and tidy.
>> Yeah, a little bit. Yeah, I think.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Cuz football and rugby, I mean, things like that. Not that Not that I'm in a rugby playing situation, but >> muddy. Muddy.
>> Very muddy.
>> Don't like that at all.
>> Yeah. You got your nice white uniform for bowling.
>> Yes. Pair of smart shoes.
>> Cups of tea. Sandwiches.
>> Yeah. Victoria cake. Oh, that would be right up your alley.
>> Hello, my name is William. I used to be a roughy tufty motorcycle racer.
[music] [music] >> [music] [music] >> boom. [laughter] D.
What bird would that be?
[music] So, [music] man managing my good and bad days legwise.
What's changed is every day was a good day, whereas now I've got a plan what I do on certain days as to how it will affect me on the next day. Um, so I knew that I was going to do a bit of walking yesterday. I wanted to do some walking today. So that's changed from before.
Um, yeah. So, it's a matter of managing it a little bit now until I get hopefully I'll get it back to where it was.
Don't know. Might need a whole new leg thing. I don't know. What do you think? As an observer.
>> As an observer.
>> As my carer. I think you push yourself too hard sometimes and then get into problems with blisters.
>> Yeah, they're horrible.
>> Um except it may look like you do lots and lots of walking and fine like brilliant on his leg, which he is. But we're only recording when the leg's feeling when your leg's feeling good, aren't we?
>> Yeah. Okay.
>> So, we're back to the shops, >> which I want to go in that shop at some point.
>> Look.
>> Ah, >> it's leading the way. So >> over to that black and follow that black there. Look. Or is that a drink hole?
>> I think I don't know. Let's have a look.
[clears throat] >> Oh, that's a lovely walk.
>> Oh, isn't it?
>> Look at that.
>> Wow.
>> That's jolly interesting, isn't it?
>> Isn't it?
Oh, okay.
>> Okay.
>> Not where I thought [music] away.
[music] >> [music] [music] [music] >> There's another one.
>> Well done.
>> Good job the bin is not on top of it.
[laughter] >> Yeah. Have we walked down here before?
Let me just get my bearings a minute.
>> Ah, Pete's Express there. We haven't been down here, >> haven't we? I wonder if Oh, that takes you back to the cross. Perhaps we didn't came down a little way.
>> Okay, >> there's another one >> that way.
Okay. So, we go.
>> So, we are here.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> City walls.
>> So, we're nearly there then. So, >> yeah. Brilliant. Let's finish.
>> Back to the bishop's palace.
>> So, it's got to be this. It's got to be.
[music] [music] [music] >> Okay. Oh, look at that.
>> What?
That took us exactly to this. That's amazing. Exactly one hour to walk the wall and the interim bits to join it back up.
>> So the walk isn't one continuous loop.
It's broken up into bits because of obviously all the buildings and shops that have grown up around it. But look to the floor, look for the swords and they'll point you in the right direction.
>> It's a lovely walk.
>> It is. It's taken us cuz yesterday we did town and it was basically a cross, wasn't it?
two streets crossing in the middle.
>> But this walk has taken us to see other parts of that we wouldn't we wouldn't have seen if we didn't do the walk.
>> Oh, I got a bug in there.
>> Oh, a squished one.
>> Yeah. Came along for the ride. It didn't work out for him. [laughter] Hey, hey, [music] [music] hey.
