Finnish Spoken language – This why you don’t understand it

[00:00:00]Puhekieli. What is What is puhekieli meaning Many students many Finnish letters Uh they don't they don't know Uh what is puhekieli like spoken language in Finnish. They have no idea.

[00:00:16]Uh because many times like me I teach Finnish at school um and many times when I speak and when I write and when I have some material for for my students they are a little bit confused.

[00:00:36]But I try to teach them also uh spoken Finnish because it's very important.

[00:00:43]And sometimes it's confusing as well, you know. You You learn one language at school.

[00:00:54]Sinulla on and so on and then then you hear you hear like Mulla on. Mulla on.

[00:01:06]Mulla on raha. Somebody says Mulla on raha. Hei, mulla on ruokaa. Mulla on ruokaa. Mulla on raha. Hei, sulla on jotain. Mitä sulla on? Mitä sulla on?

[00:01:15]Mikä toi on?

[00:01:16]Mitä sulla on?

[00:01:18]And and and you are confused. You will be understood when you speak if you say like Mitä sinulla on?

[00:01:25]Mitä sinulla on? Mikä tuo on?

[00:01:28]You will be understood.

[00:01:31]But but but what but you can't understand when Finnish people say like Mikä toi on?

[00:01:38]Mitä sulla on?

[00:01:40]Mä syön. Mä meen.

[00:01:43]And you are like what? And then like murre dialects. Like Savo dialects.

[00:01:48]Mitte työ tiette? Mitte työ tiette?

[00:01:52]Mitte työ tiette? And you are like what?

[00:01:56]Mit- what? I don't understand. So Mitte työ tiette? Meaning what are you doing? Mitä te teette?

[00:02:05]Mitä te teette? Mitte työ tiette?

[00:02:09]And and spoken language and then dialects there are >> [laughter] >> lots of different kind of things.

[00:02:19]And it's very important to also learn spoken language that you will understand something that you hear. I have decided to make videos where I speak um spoken Finnish like like more.

[00:02:39]Like I want to make like slowly spoken Finnish videos.

[00:02:45]But I want to make them like using more spoken language.

[00:02:51]So what do you think about this?

[00:02:53]Do you Do you want to hear spoken Finnish more?

[00:02:58]Because I have noticed that like at school that that I I environment offers more more uh spoke uh normal standard Finnish written kind of style Finnish than than spoken uh Finnish.

[00:03:18]So so um I think I I want to focus on spoken Finnish.

[00:03:28]Um in the near future uh with my videos so you will understand more.

[00:03:34]So I I would use uh mä rather than minä.

[00:03:41]Like saying Mä syön. Mä meen. Mä teen.

[00:03:45]Mä teen videon.

[00:03:47]Mä lähden töihin. Mä meen töihin.

[00:03:52]Not saying minä menen.

[00:03:55]Minä syön.

[00:03:58]Mä syön.

[00:03:59]Mä meen.

[00:04:01]Using using and then dialects of course.

[00:04:04]I I speak Savo dialect. I speak uh Western Finland dialects and and mixing those and then if we go to like if we go to east you hear mie sie mie mie mäe or mie mäen.

[00:04:32]But but it's it's totally different.

[00:04:36]But but the thing is that you will be understood. Like you will be understood when you speak like school Finnish.

[00:04:46]But you might have different you might have difficulties to understand Finnish.

[00:04:51]And that's the that's the thing.

[00:04:53]So so you so you should also hear normal spoken Finnish and dialects. So so so I try to focus on on spoken language uh so you can you can understand.

[00:05:11]Like if you say like for example Minä syön tänään. Minä syön tänään ruokaa.

[00:05:19]You would say like Mä syön jotain tänään.

[00:05:25]You wouldn't say like ruokaa. Minä syön ruokaa. I I eat something. I eat something. Mä syön jotain tänään.

[00:05:32]Mä syön jotain.

[00:05:34]Like Like if you say uh Minä menen kauppaan illalla.

[00:05:41]You would say Mä meen kauppaan illalla.

[00:05:46]Mä meen kauppaan illalla.

[00:05:48]It sounds different. Same but different.

[00:05:51]Mä meen kauppaan illalla. Minä menen kauppaan. Mä meen.

[00:05:55]Mä meen.

[00:05:57]Mä meen kauppaa kauppaan.

[00:06:00]Kauppaa kauppaan.

[00:06:03]Yeah. But okay.
