[00:00:32]I was going to eat this, but I forgot about it. Mhm. I guess the ice pop melted overnight.

[00:00:44]Mhm. Now, I know ice pops melt, but [music] why can't my ice pops just stay frozen?

[00:01:41]>> Um, how do ice pops freeze?

[00:01:44]>> That's a great question, Sid. I'll tell you what, I'll do some research on the computer so I can show you.

[00:01:53]>> All righty, here we go.

[00:01:55]>> [music] >> I'll read the directions and you and Dad can make some more ice pops.

[00:01:59]>> Oh, okay. I am on it. Yes, we are going to make ice pops.

[00:02:06]>> [screaming] >> I think there's some [clears throat] juice in the fridge. Come on, let's take a look.

[00:02:10]>> Oh boy.

[00:02:11]>> Okay, ready?

[00:02:12]>> [music] >> Step one. First, you put a slice of banana at the bottom of a cup.

[00:02:18]Then, you poke an ice pop stick into the banana. Oh, that way the stick won't fall over.

[00:02:24]Next, pour in your juice.

[00:02:27]Then, put the cup in the freezer.

[00:02:28][music] Then, the really cold freezer freezes it up. Ha, before you know it, you have a yummy ice pop.

[00:02:39]>> Okay, two cups ready to go in the freezer. One for Sid and one for his friend Gabriella.

[00:02:47]>> Uh one for Gabriella?

[00:02:49]>> Yeah, you and Gabriella have a playdate after school, remember?

[00:02:52]>> Oh, yeah.

[00:02:55]Gabriella is my best friend in the whole wide world.

[00:03:00]Hey, let's put those cups in the freezer. It's ice pop [music] time.

[00:05:41]>> Well, one time during the summer, I had an ice ice melt all the way down to my elbow and my elbow is not very happy about it. Isn't that right elbow?

[00:05:57]>> Oh, Gabriella. Gabriella, have you ever eaten something frozen that melted?

[00:06:07]>> Once I was eating a red, white, and blue frozen ice pop and it melted on my hand and then I had a red, white, and blue hand.

[00:08:24]>> So, here's a question for everyone. If you wanted something to stay frozen, where's the best place to keep it?

[00:08:33]>> Um Oh, somewhere cold.

[00:08:38]>> [laughter] >> I think Gerald has the right idea. Where is somewhere really cold?

[00:08:46]>> Oh, in the freezer!

[00:08:52]>> Oh, no, Sid. Your ice pops melted because they weren't in the freezer.

[00:08:59]Poor little ice pop.

[00:09:01]>> Mhm, May's right. You know, when juice or something liquid like water is kept really cold, over time it freezes and changes to ice.

[00:09:11]>> Yeah, and um then when it's not in a cold place, it melts, right?

[00:09:15]>> You got it.

[00:09:17]>> Hey, then can you freeze the water back into ice?

[00:09:21]>> Great question, Sid. Yes, you can. When something can change back and forth like that, it's called reversible change.

[00:09:30]>> Wow.

[00:09:31]>> So, water can freeze and become ice and then melt and then freeze back into ice.

[00:09:39]And that's reversible change.

[00:09:42]I like that change.

[00:09:44]>> Me too. So, who wants to see what happens when something frozen starts [music] to melt?

[00:10:45]>> Well, what happened to Sid's ice pop?

[00:10:51]>> Yes. Aha. We'll wait for the block of ice to melt into water.

[00:10:59]It takes a long time for ice to melt.

[00:11:01]Oh, no.

[00:11:03]>> Don't worry, frozen fruit. We'll get you out of there.

[00:11:06]>> Yeah, and then we'll eat you.

[00:11:10]>> [laughter] >> I have an idea. Let's make the ice melt faster. Maybe we can put a block of ice in a microwave. That'll melt it really fast.

[00:11:20]>> Well, I'm afraid the block of ice is too big for a microwave, but I like the way you're thinking, May.

[00:11:28]>> Oh, um we can blow hot air on it.

[00:11:34]>> [laughter] >> Oh, baby doc.

[00:11:37]>> Hey, what if we pour something [music] warm on the big block of ice to make it melt?

[00:11:41]>> Good idea, Sid. Look around. Is there some sort of liquid we [music] could use here in the super fab lab?

[00:11:53]>> Warm water from the sink.

[00:11:55]>> Good thinking, Gabriella. I'll go get some warm water and we'll start our investigation.

[00:12:01]>> Yeah.

[00:12:03]>> So cool. [laughter] >> You're a scientist, you can try this, too.

[00:12:08]>> Here is our ice block filled [music] with fruit.

[00:12:11]Go ahead and touch it.

[00:12:13]How does it feel?

[00:12:15]Is the ice cold? Is it hard?

[00:12:21]Draw a picture [music] of what the ice block looks like in your journal.

[00:12:27]Okay, here's your challenge.

[00:12:34]Mhm, it isn't easy to break through the ice. It's frozen solid.

[00:12:40]Now an adult is going to pour warm water over the block of ice.

[00:12:46]Wow, what is the warm water doing to the ice?

[00:12:49]It's changing the ice. It's starting to melt.

[00:12:53]Go ahead and touch the ice block [music] again. How does it feel now?

[00:12:57]I think we need to pour some more warm water over the ice.

[00:13:01]Look, it's melting even more.

[00:13:04]All right, the ice changed. It melted.

[00:13:07]Now you can reach the fruit.

[00:13:14]Go ahead. Enjoy your fruit snack.

[00:13:22]Remember what the ice was like when it was frozen and then after we poured on [music] the warm water and it melted.

[00:13:40]>> I'm glad you're all enjoying your chilly fruit snacks. Oh, I can't wait to see what observations you made in your journals. Um Sid, let's take a look at your journal first.

[00:13:49]>> Oh, okay. Um here's the big block of ice before you poured on the warm water and here's the ice after you poured the warm water.

[00:13:59]When ice melted it made a big puddle of water at the bottom and all the fruit went for a swim.

[00:14:07]>> Good observations, Sid. Okay, Gabriella, let's see your journal.

[00:14:12]>> Oh, sure.

[00:14:14]You poured warm water on the ice, but it only melted a little bit.

[00:14:18]I poked at the ice and I still couldn't get to the fruit.

[00:14:22]Then you poured on more warm water and even more warm water. It took so long for the ice to melt so we could eat the fruit.

[00:14:31]>> Great observations, Gabriella. All of you scientists made great observations.

[00:14:37]So now I have a question. If we put the melted water into the freezer, do you think we could change it back into ice?

[00:14:48]>> Yes, because ice can melt into water.

[00:14:51]>> Yeah, and then freeze back into ice.

[00:14:54]>> Yeah, and that's reversible change.

[00:14:57]>> Yes, I'm impressed. My scientists know so much about freezing, melting, and reversible change. I think [music] it's time to play with all your new ideas.

[00:19:45]>> You're right. And the icy pond melts to water and then freezes back into an icy pond. And that's called reversible change.

[00:20:34]>> Hey, is Sid's grandma, did they have freezers when you were a little girl?

[00:20:38]>> Oh, of course we had freezers, but when my grandma was a little girl, that's a different story.

[00:20:46]When my grandma was growing up, she didn't have a freezer. She had an icebox. And do you know what was inside?

[00:20:53]Ice!

[00:20:54]>> [laughter] >> It was a big old box with an ice [music] block. And everything next to the ice stayed cold. And when it was hot outside, the ice inside the box would melt. Yeah. Sometimes you'd don't up the door and all you'd find was a big old puddle of water.

[00:21:10]Water? Yeah, how do you like that? And then, to keep things cold, you had to put in a brand new block of ice.

[00:21:17]>> [laughter] >> Hey, that's what happened to my ice pops. They melted.

[00:21:23]Uh Grandma, do you think my new ice pops are frozen yet?

[00:21:26]>> I don't know. Let's go find out.

[00:21:29]>> Yay!

[00:21:31]My grandma's the coolest grandma in the whole world.

[00:21:37]>> We learned something cool, something cool today. We know it upside down and inside out. We learned all about reversible change.

[00:22:32]So, I say eat up, kids.

[00:22:45]>> Today was the best day ever. We got to melt a big block of ice and eat the fruit inside. Yum. But, the ice didn't melt right away. No way. Takes a long time for ice to melt and it It a long time for water to freeze.

[00:23:03]That's why you got to keep ice pops in the freezer so they don't melt. And that got me thinking.

[00:23:11]What if I wanted to make a really big juice pop that wouldn't fit in the freezer? How would I do that? [music] I've got it.

[00:23:23]Okay, here's my super duper uper schmuper big idea.

[00:23:29]I'm going to invent the biggest juice [music] pop in the whole world. So first I'll need a super huge tank of orange juice. Then I'll take a helicopter and fly the tank to the South Pole where it's really really cold.

[00:23:45]The whole place is like a giant outdoor freezer. Then the big tank of juice will freeze into a giant juice pop.

[00:23:53]But here [music] is the best part. I'm going to carve my giant juice pop into a special shape.

[00:24:00]When I'm all done, I'll have the world's biggest ice pop in the shape of my favorite stuffed [music] animal dinosaur, Arnie.

[00:24:12]And that's my super duper uper schmuper big idea.
