Lift is the upward force generated when air moves over airplane wings, enabling flight; larger foam airplanes require more wind to generate sufficient lift and are more susceptible to structural damage during crashes, while smaller planes offer more consistent flight performance across varying conditions.

Backyard Flyers Foam Airplane Challenge Evan StormAdded:
Today we're testing out this airplane against something way bigger.
>> Try try. Red, green, blue. Take your shot. But the big planes coming in hot, hot, glide, glide. Let it ride and side by side. Backyard fun.
Before we fly the giant plane, let's learn how airplanes work. This is the nose.
These are the wings.
And this is the tail.
And this part helps it glide through the air.
When air moves over the wings, it helps the plane lift up.
This is called lift. And today we're testing lift storm style. Evan, the first test is going to be with the blue plane. Let's see what it will do.
>> All right.
Here we go.
>> Oh, it's pretty good.
>> Round two.
>> Go for it.
>> Oh, it's still in the air. Oh, >> that was pretty good.
>> That was pretty good.
>> Yeah, that was Let's do one more.
>> Yeah, >> actually throw it into the wind and let's see how it does.
>> Into the window.
>> Into the wind. Three, two, one. Blast off.
>> He almost hit me.
>> Oh, >> let's come back. Oh, it crashed.
>> Welcome aboard flight 264. We will be in the air approximately two hours.
>> Uh, it's wing is a little sideways there.
>> A little sideways.
>> Okay, now it's dad's turn. I'm going to throw the blue plane and see how far it will go. Three, two, one.
That was terrible.
It might have went 5t.
>> Yeah, >> he threw it down onto the ground.
>> MAYDAY. MAYDAY.
THAT ALMOST HIT ME.
>> WHOA. I'm going to throw it back.
>> Oh, it hit him. Are you okay?
>> Yeah.
>> Evan, what are you doing?
>> I'm going to throw from all the way up here.
Okay, Evan is climbing up the ladder. Be very careful.
>> Yeah, it's kind of windy.
>> Yeah, do not try this at home. He's going to throw the airplane. That's good. Don't go any higher.
>> I have fear.
>> Okay, let's see if the blue plane will go a little bit farther.
Three, two, one. Blast off.
Blast off.
Yeah.
>> Oh, wow. That's pretty good.
>> Not bad.
That might be trouble.
>> Hard landing.
Oh no.
>> Into the net.
>> Oh man, that was pretty cool. I think we go.
>> Oh.
>> Oh no.
>> Over the fence.
>> No. into the >> still going.
>> Oh, it went >> it went into the pasture.
>> It's gone forever now.
>> Oh no. Come on, hurry. Let's go.
Evan threw the plane over the fence.
Where's it at?
>> I don't know.
>> Oh, I think it's in the tall grass.
>> I think it landed in the tall grass over there.
That's not good.
>> I don't see it anywhere.
>> Well, Stormers, the blue plane is gone.
>> It is. I don't see it anywhere.
>> Hope we didn't land in that bush over there.
>> It's like the grass swallowed it.
>> Probably did cuz it's so high.
>> I have an idea.
>> Yeah.
>> Let's go test out the red plane.
>> All right.
>> So, how would you rate the blue plane from a score of 1 to 10?
I'd probably give it a six.
>> Really?
>> Yeah. Whenever I threw it, it went pretty well cuz uh you know, it went over the fence and also I had a bunch of pretty good throws where it went pretty far, but it did seem to like randomly like jolt and stuff.
>> He definitely had some better throws than I did. Let's try. Now it's time for the red plane. Yeah, >> there goes team redes.
>> Oh, we got lifted up by the >> Oh, nice.
>> No, it's stainady.
Blue plane gliding through the air.
Three little flyers everywhere. Toss it high, let it ride. Catch that wind, let it glide. Spin it, flip it. Here we go.
Which one wins? We don't know. Line them up. 3 2 1. Backyard battle just about rough. That was nice landing.
Oh. Whoa. Whoa. Oh, no. It stalls.
>> Evan is climbing the ladder again. Let's see if the red plane can do better than the blue plane on top of the ladder.
>> Yeah, man. We're pretty high up here.
>> All right. Whenever you're ready, go for it.
>> All right. I'm going to wait for a gust of wind to come.
I don't see any wind.
>> I don't think you can see wind.
>> Well, you know what I meant.
>> Okay, >> just try it. I'll I'll go get it.
>> Oh, it's coming back. Oh, that's pretty cool. Oh. Whoa.
>> Oh, it's still going.
>> Still going.
Who's going to win? Let's try the big hot glide. Let it ride and >> Okay. Well, that went well.
>> Whoa.
>> Whoa.
>> Oh, nice.
>> Whoa. Oh, crashed on the fly.
>> What score would you give the red plane, Evan?
>> I'd probably give the red plane a seven.
>> This plane seemed like it did a few more loops >> and tricks. I think the only thing it would really do was the loops.
>> I'm going to give it an eight. It didn't fly over the fence into the pasture, >> but it flew pretty well.
>> Yeah. And the reason I give it a seven was because it would have some absolutely insane flips where it would probably go like 50 ft into the air and then that would make it go like I don't know a good 100 ft and it would do multiple back flips too which is really cool.
>> What do you say we test out the green plane? Yeah.
>> All right, let's do it. Now, here goes the green plane. Let's see what it can do.
>> Uhoh.
>> Oh, it got some wind.
>> Oh, no. It's going to stall out.
>> Oh, it did.
>> Did you see that?
>> It was doing really good and all of a sudden it just stalled.
>> Yeah, it stalled out at the very top, then just went straight down.
Did you see Did you see how high it went bounced off the ground?
>> Yeah, it was ready to take off.
>> Go for it.
You almost hit me.
>> That's it. I'm going to throw it back at him.
>> Uhoh. Uhoh. Uhoh.
>> Oh, that was a good one.
Over the fence.
>> Oh no, >> you got lucky.
>> It almost went over the fence into the chickens.
>> Chickens.
>> There's some dogs that probably would eat that thing, too.
>> Yeah.
>> Evan's going to throw the green plane into the wind this time. Go for it.
>> Oh. Oh, that's pretty good. THAT'S PRETTY GOOD.
>> OH, IT CRASHED HARD.
>> YEAH, >> it was sideways when it landed. That's not ever good.
>> No, it's not.
>> Now, Evan's going to throw the green plane with the wind. Let's see how it does. Go for it.
Good.
>> No, it's going to stall. Wait.
>> No, no, no. That's good.
>> Over the fence.
>> Too good. Wait. Oh, it landed.
>> Did you see that?
>> Yeah.
>> That was pretty cool.
>> That was It went really far.
Went from one side of the property to another.
Oh no, that was really low.
>> I'm glad I was not on that airplane.
>> That was a bad landing.
>> That was crazy.
One more.
Now it's time to see how well the green plane can fly from the top of the ladder.
>> Yeah. All right. Here we go. Three, two, one.
>> Oh, over the fence.
>> Uhoh.
>> Close.
>> Landed.
>> That's pretty good. Oh, >> nice.
>> Here it comes.
>> All right, Evan's going to try and jump and throw the airplane.
Uhoh. Oh, it stalled.
>> It came right back.
>> Oh, it didn't really.
>> All right, Evan. So, how would you rate the green plane from one to 10?
>> I'd probably give the green plane a nine. It flew pretty well, especially like in the wind and stuff. Oh no. Oh no. Oh, the jumbo plane is attacking Evan.
>> It's really getting some some wind.
>> What is this thing?
>> It is a massive airplane that we got.
>> It is an airplane.
>> Yeah, it's like a larger version of these little foam airplanes.
>> Oh, here it is right here. Oh, look at that.
>> That thing is huge.
>> Yeah, it's got a wingspan of 3.87 ft.
>> All right, you catch it.
There's the main body and wings. Hey, Evan, what's up with that green tape?
>> So, we were going to glue the wings on so they wouldn't pop off if it crashed pretty hard.
>> Yeah.
>> And the glue actually eroded the foam.
>> Oh, no. Was it super glue?
>> Yeah. It was dissolving the foam.
>> Oh, no.
>> And now like it's all gone. Basically, the entire the entire bottom part of it is gone. And the wings wouldn't really stay in very well, so we had to kind of tape them in. If you flip it over, this entire section down here >> Yeah.
>> is eroded.
>> Uh-oh. I see the hole right there.
>> Yeah. And there's a new hole forming.
>> Oh, no.
>> Along with a couple other areas, too.
>> Let's see if the big plane can outfly the smaller planes.
>> Yeah.
>> All right. Evan's climbing the ladder with the jumbo plane.
>> The jumbo truck. Hey, there's not really a wind right now, though.
>> There's some wind, >> is there? Okay. All right. Let's see how it does. Three, two, one, go.
>> It did stay together. I don't know how.
>> We didn't stay in the air for very long.
>> No, it did not.
Okay.
>> Oh, not bad.
>> Oh, bad.
>> Hey, that was pretty good.
>> Yeah.
I saw white stuff >> fly up in the air. Yep.
>> Let's see. Let's see >> how much.
>> Yeah, it's kind of falling apart >> already.
>> Yeah, we me and throw it away.
>> Where' it come from? The nose.
>> Came from the nose. Yeah. Oh, the nose is already taking that taken damage.
>> What is that? Bigger wings. Now that's a beast. Jumbo flyer. Super wide. Can it beat the little fleet? Tape it up. Fix the wing. Super glue. Make it swing.
Lift it up.
>> Talk about >> I'm glad that duct tape's on.
>> That was not a good landing.
>> No. That was a straight nose dive.
Let's Oh, no. That's bad. Starting to get a little loose.
>> Is it wingless?
>> Little bit. All right. Here we go.
That was bad.
>> That was not good.
>> That's really good.
>> Oh no.
>> Oh groundways.
Dad said it my way.
No way. Watch this. Miss fly. Touch the sky. Big or small.
>> Oh, there we go. There we go. Keep going. Keep going. It's still going.
It's still going. It's still going.
>> Nice.
>> Oh, that was the best one.
>> Yeah, that was good.
That might be the best one.
>> Whenever people say the thing is being held together by duct tape, this is what they mean.
>> They're probably not joking, are they?
>> No.
>> Duct tape has been around for a long time and it is a very useful material to have around the house or the shop.
That's for sure.
>> Yeah.
>> I just figured that the wings would just shatter at some point. Well, actually, the whole reason I thought it would shatter was because whenever we put the glue in there, the entire bottom part of it, this this entire section is eroded.
I was able to look inside there, like inside of a hole that was right here.
>> And you can see through the other side.
>> Well, I couldn't see through the other side, >> but it was pretty close.
>> Oh, that's not good.
>> But I could see like an entire compartment in there almost. It was like all eroded. And the wings were barely staying in there, too. The problems with this plane though is that since it's so large, it needs at least a little bit of wind to actually fly and actually stay in the air.
>> Yeah.
>> And sometimes if there's no wind, it will just go straight up and then straight down >> and the wings will pop off.
>> I noticed that it was hard for the plane to get lift. It needed a lot of air moving over the wings.
>> And if there's not a lot of wind, it's hard for that big plane to get that lift that it needs.
>> And sometimes the wind will actually push it down.
>> I noticed that, too.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. But overall, I thought they did a pretty good job.
>> Yeah, I think it did. It went pretty far. Stormers, if you guys thought the blue plane did the best, give it a thumbs up. If you thought the red plane did the best, give it a thumbs up. If you guys thought the green plane did the best, give it a thumbs up. And if you guys thought the jumbo jet did the best, hit that subscribe button.
All right, I'll see you guys next time.
Bye.
Let's try try try. Red, green, blue.
Take your shot. But the big planes coming in hot till I glide. Let it ride.
Evan and dad side by side. Backyard fun everyday. Stormers flying all the way.
>> No matter who wins, we had the best time. Backyard Flyers will fly again.
