Pan-Slavism and the start of WW1

[00:00:00]Pan-Slavism was a movement in Europe that aimed to unite Slavic people. It encouraged Slavic nations like Russia, Ukraine, and Serbia to support each other.

[00:00:12]Many Slavs living inside empires like Austria-Hungary also supported this idea.

[00:00:20]The goal was unity, politically, culturally, and sometimes even as one nation. But, this movement created tension between countries that already existed.

[00:00:33]It played a role in increasing conflict across Europe before World War I.

[00:00:40]Our story starts with one of the Slavic countries called Serbia.

[00:00:46]Serbia believed in Pan-Slavism.

[00:00:49]They wanted to join with a region called Bosnia. The problem was that Bosnia was part of another country called Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary was made up of many different races of people.

[00:01:04]If Austria-Hungary let Bosnia join Serbia, then many other races of people within Austria-Hungary might also try and want independence.

[00:01:15]That would result in the end of Austria-Hungary.

[00:01:19]Austria-Hungary could not let this happen.
