Today the population is confronting another threat, malaria. In this part of the Mayotonaga division, residents are now waging a determined battle against the disease which continues to claim lives, especially among children and pregnant women. Health officials estimate the mortality rate at 24% and with the rainy season approaching, medical teams are intensifying prevention and awareness campaigns across surrounding villages.

>> In terms of prevention, we distribute treated mosquito nets to pregnant women throughout our various health centers while the children receive free treatment. We also provide insecticides to help eliminate mosquitoes at their breeding sites.
