Voss masterfully treats corporate fan service as high-stakes narrative architecture, finding coherent logic within a chaotic multiversal mess. It is a brilliant exercise in over-intellectualizing a franchise’s desperate attempt at structural survival.

Avengers Doomsday Trailer NEW DETAILS You Need To Know!Added:
Welcome back to New Rockstars. I'm Eric Voss, actually in the studio this time.
And the Avengers Doomsday trailer shown at Cineacon has sent shock waves through the nerd world with the descriptions from those of us lucky to be in the room to witness it already helping fans get a sense of what this film will ultimately be. In this video, I'm going to follow up my early description of what I was able to recall from my two screenings of the trailer with some new details that I can share from further dot connecting with some other things that were said at Cineacon to decode exactly what Dr. Doom's plan is in Doomsday. For early access to some of our videos, exclusive access to certain podcasts, and various other benefits, please support us by subscribing to the NR Underground at nrunn.supcast.com.
Okay, I described generally everything that happens in the Avengers Doomsday trailer that was shown at Cineacon in this video, but I was struck by a few quotes from the filmmakers that had me looking back at my notes differently.
And suddenly the big picture becomes very clear. Now, as a reminder, much of the trailer that I saw does take place in the X mansion. That's where the trailer opens on the shot of the metal sign of the estate and then Charles looking out the window at the red sky as the atmosphere ignites from an incursion. And that's why all the light that we see on these characters and the December teasers has kind of a reddish pinkish tint to it. Also, the shots of Charles and Magneto accepting their fate, that's also in the expansion. And then on the lower level of the mansion, that's where the fights break out between Gambit and Shani and Yelina Bova and Mystique, who shapeshifts into Yolena. But in these shots of the mansion, Reed Richards is there along with Sam Wilson. And I actually forgot to mention this, freaking Herby is there as well in the mansion. And then of course there are the shots of Thor in the gardens outside of the mansion when he faces off with Dr. Doom. Now to clear up a few things here. No, we never see Dr. Doom unmasked in this trailer. I know some trailer descriptions you might have read from some other witnesses thought that they saw his actual face, but I can confirm in that first shot of Doom from the side. He is wearing the mask in that shot. His metallic nose piece is very sharp and angled. I think what people thought were scars are actually just the ridges and rivets that are uniquely part of Doom's mask design in this movie, which you can see in this Dr. Doom art that Disney has included in their expo presentations for the film.
This is exactly how Dr. Doom looks in the trailer. We never see Robert Downey Jr.'s face in the footage, but we do hear his voice speaking in his version of a Latian accent. Something's coming, something we may not be able to deter.
Before this day is done, we shall be faced with an unthinkable decision. I'm going to come back to that quote and why it's really important. But I also want to clear up that I do not recall seeing Alan Cummings Nightcrawler in this trailer, nor Kelsey Grammer's Beast.
Those are the only two prominent X-Men characters known to be in the movie who did not appear in this Doomsday trailer.
And I'm also pretty sure that we did not see Bob Reynolds Sentry either. But with all of these shots of the X-Mansion, I noticed this line from Kevin Feige that he gave to Fandango after they screened the trailer. Look, I think for fans, the notion of having the Avengers and X-Men together for the first time within our cinematic universe is incredibly exciting. Has been something that has been a long time coming. No spoilers, but there might be some sets spoilers.
Some sets that you recognize um uh some sets that you recognize from those original films and and being being on those sets 26 years later with my now 12-year-old son um was pretty emotional.
>> Some sets. Yeah, I have to imagine that the X-Mansion interior and exterior are definitely two different sets, but they also aren't exactly specific iconic sets that we saw in any of the X-Men movies that Kevin Feige actually worked on.
Even the X-Mansion that we see in this movie has far more stained glass than the X-Mansion did in the Fox era. Like, there is a shot of Gambit leaping off of the balcony inside where the whole ceiling is stained glass. And also, why would Kevin Feige consider this main part of the mansion a spoiler when the third teaser released in December already showed most of it? So that's why I think Feige is actually hinting at the fact that we are going to see Cerebro in Avengers Doomsday. Cerebro was the most iconic interior set that any of us would have been able to remember from the first two X-Men films. I would also say the danger room, but we didn't see the danger room as a set until the third X-Men movie. And we know from the Marvel's postredit scene that this mansion has a lower level to it. So among those doors that Beast walked past when he's on his way back up to talk to Charles probably included Cerebro. Now why would the characters need Cerebro in this movie? Well, maybe it's to locate the missing mutant of Franklin Richards.
Actually, a press release from Disney gave us an update there. We learned that the young actor Wesley Holloway is now listed among the cast. We have to assume that this is going to be the new Franklin Richards in Avengers Doomsday.
We know Franklin's going to be in it because the kid was on the production tote bag. Now, Wesley Holloway was not the actor who played the four-year-old Franklin Richards in the Fantastic 4 First Steps postredit scene. So, maybe it's a recast or maybe some time has passed in Franklin's life after that moment. It is so hard for me to establish boundaries. As soon as somebody asks me for something, I find myself putting what they need before what I need. Sometimes that's not a problem. But when my bandwidth is low, it can lead to burnout and resentment.
My therapist reminded me that saying no is okay. It's 100% a normal and healthy thing to do to be like, "Hey, sorry, I can't." You don't need to make up an excuse or have a bulletproof alibi for why you can't get coffee this weekend.
You can just say no. I have gotten tons of little bits of advice like that from therapy that make life easier.

And while we're talking about casting, an update since my last video, the young blonde woman whom Scott Lang kisses on the forehead in a trailer, as I suspected, is Katherine Newton as Cassie Lang with new dyed hair.
Katherine Newton confirmed that she's in Doomsday on her socials on Friday with a little avenge chair that Marvel shipped to her. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly after the Cineon screening, Kevin Feige confirmed the general plot inspiration for Doomsday.
quote, "We're not talking too much about story, but I think people know that the story of Doomsday is inspired by a very famous comic run in which universes are colliding and Earths encounter one another and different timelines encounter one another." And in movie speak, that's what allows us to get different casts from different franchises. Feige is referring to Jonathan Hickman's time runs out story line, which led into the 2015 Secret Wars crossover event. We've talked about this a lot on this channel. And in the trailer shot of the Avengers Tower penthouse on the video wall screen where the Thunderbolts first saw the Fantastic 4 ship arriving. In the trailer, you do see a diagram of this configuration. In my breakdown, I said that this was inspired by Reed's explanation of incursions and worlds colliding from Jonathan Hickman's time runs out storyline. A specific moment that we know Michael Waldron drew upon in a scene that he wrote for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where John Krinsky's Reed Richards explains what incursions are. But what's different in Doomsday though is that in the comics it's just two universes colliding. 616 and 1610. Here in the movie it's three distinct universes. 616005 the X-Men universe and 828. That's the Fantastic 4 universe. So three. Now the number three might also have been behind an unusual choice of words that Joe Russo used to describe Dr. Doom before they brought out Robert Downey Jr. to introduce the Doomsday trailer. Victor von Doom is the greatest Marvel villain of all time. He is greater than Thanos.
But he's not simply a villain. He's one of the most complex Marvel characters.
He's a scientist, a technologist, a genius, a magician. He's always three moves ahead of even the most brilliant heroes, which makes him virtually unbeatable. H scientist, technologist, genius. Where have we heard that construction before?
>> Take that off. What are you? Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.
>> Magician, though. That gives us some context for how Doom could easily stop Stormbreaker, a weapon forged by Etri with a certain kind of magic that could have cut through six Infinity Stones if Thor had gone for the head. And by saying that Dr. Dooms ahead of the most brilliant heroes, I think he's talking about Reed Richards. But specifically, three moves ahead. Three moves ahead isn't that many moves when you're talking about a chess master. I think it's a sign that Dr. Doom is actually exploiting the natural incursions that are happening in order to nudge these three universes together to enact his ultimate plan, which of course is Battle World to create one new universe out of the strongest parts of the strongest three universes populated by heroes most fit to survive and lead that final merged world. I think Dr. Doom thinks these kids that he's taken are part of the first generation of that new world.
Like, I was also curious by the one line we hear Downy's Dr. Doom speak in the trailer. Something's coming. something we may not be able to deter. Before this day is done, we shall be faced with an unthinkable decision. I mean, if this dude is wrecking Thor the way he does in the trailer, what's the point of saying something like this? Why does it come off as a warning from someone who is currently facing or has faced a similar apocalypse as whoever he's talking to?
Like, this is certainly not the villainous type of line we've heard Thanos say in the Russo's first teaser for Infinity War. I know what it's like to lose, to feel so desperately that you're right, yet fail nonetheless.
dread it, run from it. Destiny arrives all the same, and now it's here. Or should I say, I am. Doom's quote comparatively sounds like he's trying to sort of comfort either the heroes he's trying to convince, like heroes less stubborn than the god of thunder, or maybe comfort some of these kids he's recruited. Franklin Richards, Love, Tchala Jr. kind of sounds like he's trying to make someone okay with just letting their world burn, aka an unthinkable decision. So perhaps incursions in the multiverse were naturally happening, but Doom, under his new mask, same task motivation, is trying to spare these three worlds, and he thinks he's the hero in doing this by merging them into one stronger world, a world with a metaphoric suit of armor around it, taking pieces of those three worlds in order to form one combined world that's known as Battle World, and letting the scraps burn. Anthony Russo told Entertainment Weekly this pretty interesting quote about Doom in the movie. quote, "Certainly with Doom, it's the problem in the extreme in that his power is so immense and so beyond. But that really liberates us all on a creative level, artistic level to figure out where the complexities and the vulnerabilities are in the character.
They may have seemingly unlimited physical power, but there is something inside them where they are vulnerable, where they are exposed, where there are places that they need to protect even more intently than their physical selves." Hm. Kind of sounds like someone who's willing to make an extreme sacrifice. And I think Feige indicated this in his final quote in the Fandango interview.
>> Kevin, you mentioned Secret Wars, but how do these two films relate?
>> Uh, well, I think people familiar with the with the comic stories see that they that they will relate, but they I will say this, they relate in a very different way than Infinity War and Endgame. I think people are expecting a similar a similar uh connection. And and while one certainly does lead into the other, uh it it's in a very different way. And I will say that Secret Wars is as ambitious a project as we've ever embarked on.
>> Yeah, Feige is signaling here that this will lead to Battle World. He's already setting some expectations for Secret Wars cuz he wants that to be an even bigger success in Doomsday next year.
But Infinity War leading into Endgame saw the surviving heroes trying to undo the villain's victory. And ultimately, they were kind of able to do that. So, I think Secret Wars is going to be a villain who permanently changes the landscape of the universe. And the heroes are helpless to change that. So instead, it's going to be a new group of heroes who adapt to that new world and turn it into something that they can live in. And it's going to be those new heroes in Secret Wars who lead the charge. New heroes like mutants, like Amiles Morales. Look, I have a lot more questions from what I saw, like how Steve Rogers is back with Thor and whatever present day Thor is in, and why we are seeing particular groupings and pairings of Avengers. I'm really hoping the trailer drops this week so that I can just begin to answer those questions with proper footage once we're all on the same page.
