"Fujimori never again!" Protesters fill streets of Lima ahead of Peru presidential elections

[00:00:00]There's outrage in the streets of Lima over Keiko Fujimori. The 50-year-old presidential candidate is the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori.

[00:00:47]>> Alberto Fujimori, who died in 2024, ruled the country with an iron fist between 1990 and 2000 before serving a 16-year prison sentence for human rights abuses, including commanding death squads that massacred civilians.

[00:01:03]At age 19, he appointed Keiko as Peru's first lady, and she later inherited his right-wing populist movement.

[00:01:11]This is the fourth time she has stood in a presidential election.

[00:01:15]She campaigned on a promise to crack down on organized crime, a hot-button issue in Peru, and came out on top in the first round of voting ahead of the center-left Roberto Sánchez.

[00:01:27]The two will face off at the runoff on June 7th against the backdrop of severe political instability.
