[00:00:08]All right. So, on the cover is Milla Jovovich. It's labeled right here.

[00:00:16]Kind of interesting that she's got her name down there because you never see that on the cover of a magazine like this unless it's like a movie star type of a celebrity. Milla Jovovich was not a movie star at this time because she was 12.

[00:00:30]She's 12 years old on the cover of 17 and she looks 12. She looks like she's ordering off the kids menu still. In big hoop earrings and some play makeup.

[00:00:42]Beyond that, it's a very fun summery color scheme. Milla's wrapped in this kind of interesting textile wrap, I guess. I don't know what that is. We'll find out. All right, let's get started.

[00:00:56]Make your hair glimmer, shimmer, or simply glow. Several different box hair dyes or kind of hair whatever highlight kits here. There's hair painting.

[00:01:18]It's Debbie Gibson. There's some bright, very bright hot pink natural wonder lipstick and nail polish here. We have a few quotes from from Debbie herself. [00:02:51]The bright pink with the vibrant sapphire blue is such a killer combination. Renee Simonsen for Cover Girl soft radiance lipsticks. They're like more sheer more light, I think. For summer makes sense. Also makes sense for like a teen audience.

[00:07:19]You can see we have like a kind of a recolorized black and white thing down here with some colorful eye shadow on these little black and white faces.

[00:07:33]This is a couple of different formulas for different results. All of the results are [music] the the yellow. You do get a yellow head of hair, cartoon yellow, gentle super and natural lemon.

[00:07:49]Another fabulous illustration. Whoa, Stridex big pads. How you handle pimples on your back in January may not work in June. Oh, he's got a turtleneck on at the beach, sweating up a storm. This is a beautiful beautiful airbrushed illustration. Whoa.

[00:08:12]Sheer color sensation, Clairol Pazazz. This is a color wash, so it kind of sort of gives your hair a tint without being like a full dye, and the colors are all pinks and purples, which is pretty shocking.

[00:08:28]Maybe that would be good on like a dark hair, you know, like a Sailor Moon.

[00:08:32]How they have their hair has like a purple shine to it, or like a green shine or whatever.

[00:08:37]Okay, we have some some some shopping, the very best in accessories for you for summer '88. We have beaded necklaces with little straw baskets on them.

[00:09:04]I don't know if you've noticed there's been so many hair removal ads and like articles and stuff. Um, here's another one. It's a glide-on Nair. It's kind of like a deodorant stick style.

[00:09:21]So, this is a a high-concept ad from Finesse. It's like it's a little story about girls that work at a diner.

[00:09:29]>> [laughter] >> Totally classic cartoon costume diner outfits with little white aprons and dresses, [music] pink diner dresses for waitresses and they were holding little receipts and coffee coffee pots and things. And then look at this.

[00:09:45]It's like a step-by-step little photos, like a photo album of getting ready with all of these Finesse products. Get your hair nice and uh greasy for the diner where it will get even greasier.

[00:10:00]And then they're doing this like dress-up thing. I don't know why.

[00:10:03]They're doing some kind of prom moment at the diner, too. Some handsome tuxedo boys.

[00:10:09]This is cute. I don't know. This feels very like aspirational, like, oh, a summer job, you know? Like you're a teenager, maybe that'd be like so exciting for you.

[00:10:18]I remember getting my first job as a teenager, scooping ice cream.

[00:10:28]Some Caress soap over here in more summery, bright, vibrant colors. This is like a kind of a carved or molded plastic bangle bracelet with flowers all over it. It's kind of cute. And there is an interview with Charlie Schlatter over here. Look at that wonderful red loud red sweater.

[00:11:02]We have cherry and raisins, which is raisins that are covered with like a cherry yogurt type whatever candy coating, I guess, and yogurt-covered crunchy apple bits. That sounds so good. I'm very interested in this cherry raisin thing in particular.

[00:12:17]These three sad girls in blue walking off into the forest because they won't wear pads. It's a Tampax tampon ad. And then this one, couple pages back, I felt funny about using a tampon.

It's like trying to be both things. More hot pink, screaming hot pink one-piece swimsuit on some Adirondack chairs with your tan boyfriend.

[00:13:28]Usually it's a very massive heavy brown kind of lump and I've seen so many Victoria Principal Germaine ads. Dressed in a a rather interesting oversized [music] um red like brocade huge shirt I think with rolled up sleeves and a color matched bold earring.

[00:13:50]Sweatsuits in a rainbow of lovely tasty pastels.

[00:13:56]Big 80s trends here. We have paper bag waists. We have a kind of a off the shoulder kind of wide cut sweatshirt.

[00:14:05]Oversized everything. Leggings and the the belts too. They got everything going on and there's even a boy and he looks so cute.

[00:14:15]Okay, we're moving into our kind of like 17 editorials. All right, our June features. We're getting hot in the sun.

[00:15:32]Okay, I had to like I'm like in my head turning through like why is it desert but then it's Spanish Spanish like Spain is not a desert. What are they talking about? I guess it's sort of the inspiration is a blend of things kind of lazy. Blend of things so we're blending together Spanish, south of the border and even Indian influences. That's what it says.

[00:15:53]So, yeah, that's what that meant. Now we now we understand. It's a bit of a blur.

[00:16:09]And on this side we're piling on the jewelry. Silver and colorful beads. Kind of cute to see a freckly model. They didn't try to erase those freckles.

[00:17:29]Over here, we we are getting finals phobia for the end of the school year, of course. So, it's called food for thought cuz we're talking about getting like a balanced diet to help you think clearly at school. She looks so much like Michelle Pfeiffer, doesn't she?

[00:17:51]Get your brain on straight. We're big on raisins. Okay. We're mo- raisins have come round again as a thing to eat in the '80s. For breakfast, we are having a split whole wheat English muffin with uh ricotta cheese on it, not cream cheese.

[00:18:11]I just saw an A1 ad in this magazine I looked through last week, which was um Country Living from 1986.

[00:18:21]We're still doing A1 stuff, and it still looks like the most frighteningly >> [laughter] >> saturated freaky food photography.

[00:18:32]Love lasts forever. I'm sure your teenage boyfriend and you were probably still together. So, here we have like a little his and hers like heart key necklace thing.

[00:18:48]Okay, we're getting towards the end. So, we're moving into the black and white little ads for weird junk. Miss American Petite. Okay.

[00:19:00]We always see this in uh teen magazines, like modeling schools, modeling contests, Look of the Year, win $1 million. [music] There's an international model model search going on from Elite Model Management and John Casablancas.

[00:19:18]There's an ad here for uh fashion merchandising program and there's little quotes from different uh students of this program and I'm surprised to see several many boys here that have attended this program, okay?

[00:19:34]Maybe they knew that uh some boys might read Seventeen magazine and might want to study fashion in college.

[00:19:46]There's a lot of uh kind of secondary education things in here like not a traditional college track.

[00:19:55]This is one for Boyd School Travel and Business Careers. It would train you to work for airlines, cruise lines, travel agents, hotels, and corporate travel departments. It's kind of fun. We have our little travel girly here. I think she's a flight attendant or something.

[00:20:22]Finally, on the last page, we got our little Milla Jovovich feature. And by the way, I'm sure you noticed, there was only two pictures of her. The cover image, which is this one again, and that other picture of her with her head turned a little bit. So, what? Lame.

[00:20:38]Milla was born in Kiev, USSR. She and her family left the Soviet Union 7 years ago and now lives in Los Angeles, age 12.

[00:20:47]Yep.

[00:20:48]>> [laughter] >> So, Milla says she wanted to be an actress, but when Prima Model Management saw my pictures 8 months ago, they signed me up. Since then I've been to New York, Paris, Nepal. It's great.

[00:21:02]Funny to hear her talk about like I wanted to be an actress, but like she had to give up on that dream at age 12.

[00:21:07]It's and that's not going to happen. But then it did happen.

[00:21:11]Can you imagine turning turning out to be the thing you always wanted to be even when you were 12 [music] and then that actually does become your career?

[00:21:20]It is an ad for Hawaiian Blend Tropical Blend Tanning Oil, okay? It looks like oil, like literally looks like jars of brown cooking oil. And uh there's you down here greased up shiny and dark like a rotisserie chicken with that French braid. It's a fully backless swimsuit.

[00:21:41]Looks to be like a one-piece, I think, in a yellow and purple colorway. It's very very tropical fun. We're looking out at the beach having a vision of these products as we stare into the sun.

[00:21:58]Vitale's has sun. We're lifting weights cuz they're they improve your body in 2 minutes flat, your hair body, but we're have these two brown colored bottles on this hand weight. Love this particular brown color right here. This kind of like I don't know what you'd call that, mink color? I just I think that's it's very era-specific. I like that. Our weightlifter is kind of in a pretty heavy shadow silhouette here, but she does have a VS like Vitale's has sun earring.
