Texas Cold Front This Weekend: Storm Chances, Cooler Weather & Freeze Risk in the PanhandleAdded:
Couple more chances of storms the next couple of days, but a pretty strong cold front by April standards rolls in Friday night and Saturday. With that, plenty of showers and storms and much cooler weather. Let's tell you all about it in this Thursday edition of the Texas Weather Roundup.
Happy Thursday. It is the 16th of April, 2026. I'm Texas weather roundups Baldi and Chief David Rhyr. Thanks for taking time out of your day to pop on in for some Texas weather information. We were we bit busy last evening with some hailers across the big country, North Texas and Texoma. Uh luckily no tornadoes. Um there was some instances of flooding and definitely hail. Could we do it again today? Maybe in a few spots, but far less widespread and far fewer storms than we saw yesterday.
Let's just go ahead. Here is the severe weather outlook for this afternoon and evening. And we do have the potential for an isolated severe storm or two across the northern Edwards Plateau, uh the western Concho Valley, eastern Peran Basin, the Big Country into western North Texas. And this is to cover the potential for isolated severe storms this afternoon and evening. So, we're not expecting widespread activity. We're not expecting most folks to get rain today. In fact, the vast majority will remain dry. But where we do have storms that manage to develop in a spot or two later today, they are probably going to be pretty intense with a risk of hail up to the size of tennis balls and localized damaging wind gusts over 60 to 70 m an hour. So, it's definitely looking like any storms we do have, we'll be dropping hail, but we are not expecting many storms today. Tomorrow, isolated to widely scattered severe storms are possible uh during the late afternoon, early evening hours across the Concho Valley, Big Country, northern Edwards Plateau, western and well, pretty much not even western North Texas. North Texas as a whole, Texoma in Northwest Texas, and then we may have a slightly higher number of storms um along the Red River up in Oklahoma.
Large hail, localized damaging wind gusts will be the main threat. And then we could have an uptick in storms tomorrow night into Saturday morning as a cold front moves south. So here's the high-res rapid refresh model for today and tonight. You can see isolated thunderstorms possible parts of northwest Texas, the Big Country, Concho Valley, Edwards Plateau. Again, most folks are not going to see storms today, but whatever storms we have, we'll probably be dropping hail going into tomorrow afternoon evening. You can see things look fairly calm for most of the day. And then tomorrow night into Saturday morning, we're expecting an uptick in thunderstorm coverage as a cold front moves south into northwest Texas, the big country of the Concho Valley. And then we could even see a few storms fire up late tomorrow afternoon and evening in the Concho Valley, eastern Perian Basin and Edwards Plateau with again some of those storms producing large hail and localized damaging wind gusts. As that cold front moves south Saturday morning, you can see we may get a pretty decent coverage of showers and storms with it. And most of those storms are not going to be severe. They'll behave themselves, but still cloud to ground lightning and some locally heavy rainfall, maybe a bit of hail will be possible with that along with much cooler temperatures. And we'll talk more about that just ahead.
Wildfire danger the next few days for the Texas A&M Forest Service. We're looking at extreme fire danger today in West Texas in the panhandle and that continues into Friday and Saturday. Even after a cold front moves through on Saturday, the fire danger is expected to remain high.
Your simulated radar over the next few days from the European weather model.
And as you see, we could get a pretty decent amount of rain coverage along and behind this cold front on Saturday, even into parts of Sunday across the state with rain chances continuing into early next week, southern half of Texas. Now, we're not looking at really widespread heavy rain with this, but some folks are probably going to get over an inch of rain, uh, which could result in some modest street flooding. Otherwise, going into early next week, you see some of those scattered thunderstorm chances continue southern half and western portions of the state of Texas, but no real organized big bad very mad severe weather setups after we get past today and tomorrow. Uh this weekend, severe storms are not looking particularly likely. Just some showers and thunderstorms with lightning, which that itself will pose an issue for those with outdoor plans. And then below average temperatures will result in a lower severe weather risk through the first half of next week. Though we could start seeing that risk increase again as we get towards Thursday and Friday of next week. But again, hey, you know what? We need rain, right?
So, the fact we're actually getting some rain this weekend without widespread severe weather or, you know, 10 inches of rain, that's always a nice thing to have. Today, high temperatures, it's going to be toasty with lots of 80s and 90s across Texas. So, definitely hot out there. Tonight, we're looking at a very humid and muggy night across the eastern 80 to 85% of Texas with the moisture access making it all the way back to 385 and I27.
Lows in the mid to upper 60s and low 70s with plenty of lowle clouds. Uh maybe some mist and fog to start off your Friday morning. Tomorrow highs 96 in Laredo 92 San Antonio 94 up in Childris 92 in Abling 90s in Midland Odessa Fort Stockton Pacus 82 in El Paso about 86 in Amarillo 85 in DFW 88 Texar and about 87 in Houston. So enjoy it cuz it's going to get cooler Saturday morning. Low temperatures as the cold front moves southeast. We're going to have temperatures down to the upper 20s up in the northwestern parts of the panhandle.
Wind chills could be in the teens. Uh we're looking at 30 in Dowart, about 33 in Pitton, 33 in Dumis. So a freeze possible. The northern and northwestern sections of the Texas panhandle.
Temperatures down to the upper 30s. West Texas generally in the 40s. Concho Valley, Big Country, Texoma, and Northwest Texas. Uh, these are from 7:00 a.m. Saturday and sooner. So, you kind of see where the cold front looks to be around 7 a.m. Saturday, bisecting Texas, northwestern half to southeastern half, southeastern half of Texas. Temperatures still in the 70s. It's going to be a very muggy start to your Saturday. High temperatures after 7 a.m. Saturday onward. Uh we're looking at mostly 60s to 70s the northwestern twothirds of Texas. So much cooler weather and again some rain chances continuing. So uh it's definitely not going to be the nicest weekend that's for sure and much cooler still. South Texas uh we're going to make it up into the 90s before the cold front arrives. Southeast Texas, the Golden Triangle, the coastal plains 80s.
Now going into Sunday morning, we're looking at lows near freezing in West Texas in the panhandle. So a light freeze is possible. Uh 31 in Dowart, 34 Pitton, 33 in Plain View, 37 in Lach, 35 in Amarillo. So we'll definitely see some uh topographical apparencies. If I just made up a word, I might have. Cool. in those regions where the valleys are cooler. Uh 40s well down into the Hill Country, Concho Valley, Big Country, Peran Basin, Big Ben, North Texas, Central Texas, Northeast Texas.
Lows down to the 40s to start off your Sunday. Uh mostly in the 50s to low 60s the southeastern third of Texas. High temperatures on Sunday with again some rain chances sticking around for some.
Uh upper 50s in the Guadalupe and Davis Mounds. Otherwise, everyone else mostly in the 60s and 70s. Monday morning, another cool start to the day. We're looking at lows down into the 40s and 50s for a good chunk of Texas with low 60s along the coast, mid-upper 60s down the Rio Grand Valley and South Texas.
High temperatures on Monday, uh, with those rain chances increasing the Hill Country, some folks may struggle to get above 60°. Uh, so 60s for high temperatures there. uh everyone else mostly in the 70s and then we'll begin that warming trend going towards Wednesday and Thursday of next week. So, you know, the weather continues to look active in the extended range as one might expect during April. And we need rain. So, you know what? We'll take it.
We just don't need any of the hail or wind. We've been pretty lucky in terms of tornadoes though. That's for sure. It definitely seems like a upper Midwest spring uh year for tornadoes this year.
they're just getting pummeled. Uh we on the other hand have been lucky for most of us in that regard. So we'll see how things keep looking as we get to May.
It's not a guarantee it's going to stay that way. That's it for your Thursday edition of the Texas Weather Roundup.
