Experimental films can create meaning by establishing genre conventions and then subverting them, using techniques like sound-image discrepancies, non-linear editing, and the transformation of private moments into public spectacle to challenge traditional viewing expectations and reveal the constructed nature of cinematic reality.

No Genre Survives Three Minutes | Shoot Self with You — Video Essay
Added:A romance lasts 8 seconds.
A lullabi [music] shares its beat with the death wish.
A voyage back to Earth becomes a psychological report.
And when this film says it is over, he keeps speaking.
Shoot self with you, also known as human surrender, is herf far's 156-inute [music] Chinese experimental film born between rehearsal, performance, film making and real [music] relations.
Calling it fiction, documentary, filmed theater or performance art [music] misses the mechanism. It does not blend genres. It [music] lets each one live just long enough to earn your trust, then kills it with whatever that genre kept outside [music] the frame.
Look at the frame before you listen.
There are already three people here.
Romance trains us to crop the third person out. Giui speaks.
>> The camera refuses to cut. 8 seconds later, Zishu answers. [music] Nothing in the image has changed. Yet the image has been reclassified. [music] Love becomes an assignment returned with a failing grade.
The film's most radical cut often happens without a cut.
>> It happens inside the spectator.
[music] >> [music] >> Later, language begins building a horror film. No eyes, empty sockets, water, struggling, a swollen [music] stomach.
But the bed remains dry. The image [music] gives us only an ordinary body.
Too close, too dark, [music] too difficult to read. Horror moves into the gap between what sound promises and what vision refuses.
You have heard too much and seen too little. The monster is not in the [music] frame. It is the contract between the frame and your expectation.
Now listen to how the film edits with sound. [music] A lullabi begins.
>> [music] >> Then die enters the same rhythmic position.
This is not tenderness followed by violence. [music] Consolation and elimination occupy the same beat. [music] The film does not need a conventional score to control us. Voices, overlaps, room tones, and unfinished [music] weights become the score.
Low energy is not silence.
No [music] dialogue is not nothing.
>> At 93 minutes, someone may be returning to Earth. A human voice performs ground control and calls astronaut 7. For a few seconds, [music] language opens the cheapest possible universe, but the camera never leaves the public performance space.
Then the universe [music] collapses into administration.
[music] The astronaut becomes a number, a diagnosis.
Science fiction promises an outside.
The report folds every journey [music] back into an accessessible person.
[music] [music] [music] From 0 to 1, faces are summoned into a screen test.
>> From 1 to two, rehearsal turns feeling [music] into material. From two to three, beds, projections, LED light, fans, and pursuit turn intimacy into a perception machine.
From 3 to 4, [music] low angles, plastic sheets, marked bodies, and spectators make that machine public. From four to five, numbers and credits take control.
The film does not [music] illustrate a story. It grows organs.
>> [music] >> This is the film's deepest proposition.
Stream of consciousness made inner life nonlinear. Human surrender makes inner life non-private. I wasn't thinking of anything. I was just spacing out.
The reply comes immediately. If you space out, what will everyone watch?
Even withdrawal becomes content.
Cameras, spectators, procedures, subtitles, and later, people like us interpreting the film do not simply record reality. [music] They help produce what is allowed to count as real.
>> [music] >> Near the end, blankness becomes a question. Do you need me to speak for you? The answer is only speak. A voice becomes a relay for another voice.
makes a person visible as a structure. No one can see [music] the dark persists while the audience the ex the camera [music] remain inside.
[music] [music] >> [music] >> Then he fat announces our performance is over but the number of performers keeps changing three four five while a giant fo remains on the screen live credits. [music] >> One last sentence face that spoke it. Each layer owns a different ending time. Performance, number, image, [music] sound, name, logo.
The credits do not clear the stage. They file the evidence and expose what the file still cannot contain.
Human surrender is [music] not about surrendering to an outside power. It asks what happens when language, intimacy, performance, cameras, and spectators build a system no one can stand outside. Its achievement is not that it explains people. It makes us feel the cost of helping to turn [music] them into images.
Seeing is not owning. Preserving is not rescue. And watching is never innocent.
