In tractor pulling competitions, specialized sleds use adjustable pan systems with growers (digging mechanisms) to maximize traction and pulling power, with weight distribution critical for performance—typically 10-12 tons total, with the majority in the sled box and additional weight on the pan to dig into the ground for maximum pulling force.

Heat.
Sled number one has finally arrived.
We've got the scale pad off so the pullers can weigh in tonight. Sled number two has just arrived. Let's go learn about the sled and kind of how it works. Tell us a little bit about the sled. We're going to start here with the pan.
>> So start with the pan, I guess. So on our sleds here that Greg Panninsky built, uh, we got a cutter bar up here, um, that we change every year. This sled here I can do black top pulls with. So I got a cover here and a cover there and then one in the back. I built bolt a wooden skid with a tire on it to do black top pulls. Favorite part about the job right there. Come back here. So we got switches on the outside here. Some of them have them on the inside of the rails. Mine are on the outside. So, basically each switch will terminate where uh the pan will drop um or where the back end would pick up on the sled.
So, we can adjust it here. I'm getting off track here, but we can adjust it here. Um where the pan drops, so about how I got marks on this line here about where the pan would drop. Um getting back to the pan, I guess on uh all the sleds that Greg have, uh he built growers. So, I have a grower on this side and I have a grower on the other side. And I have to lock them in from right here. There's a hydraulic lever that locks them down. So, uh, when this pan drops, they dig in. And then I also have one in the middle here that I can push or I can lock in. Um, varies. If you, uh, if you would push it, you get about 20 more feet further than you would if you lock it. Um, so that, uh, that's a big game changer there. We'll get here to the drive shafts. I mean, we can, uh, move the drive shafts to set the gears. Um he it's got a chart here the gears and that what when you're setting the gears that's how fast the box is going to move up. Um you know if you got a 300 foot track you clearly want you know depending on the track or the classes you're going to want uh how fast the box moves up. Now when we get in the cab we won't worry about getting there. We got a bunch of levers and stuff that uh you can do your pan push your pan lock your pan hold up I should say. Um then just the back and forth steering wheel and all that fun stuff.
>> How much weight can you have on the sled at a time?
>> So it it varies uh per class clearly. Um the most we carry is 12 ton. Um that would be for the souped up semiis. Um like tonight if we get some pro stocks down here in hub city we'll have 10 ton on. Um and you would put uh you put majority of it in the in the box of the sled there and then you can put a ton here and a ton there on the pan. So of course when the pan would drop you have all you'd have 4 ton and it would it really digs in the ground and and if something some people would realize is like we have growers like I've said before and on other sleds they have metal bars that are welded crosswise on the back of their sled. So when they drop they dig a lot harder than than these do depending on the track. I got something I got unique on this sled here that Greg did is uh it's more for a black top thing. You can use it for the antiques too. I got an airbag. Um, so basically what the airbag does on the front of the sled, which you do not use it on the bigger stuff is it pushes down on the front and brings the back up so it'll pull easier for more more of the antiques wise and stuff. And then we'll come to the front of the sled here. Just kind of go through some of your safety your safety uh features that they require um on your hook. Um that's a heavy hook. If you ever want to work out, just come and hook at a pole and go real quick. We got to have a tab here.
Basically, it when the tractor pulls it, uh kind of will catch on the hitch or you could say um so it pulls up so it don't slip out.
Then we got the old safety cable here.
This gets hooked to the back of the SL tractor and um basically if something would go wrong, gets wild, uh tractor gets stuck open or whatever, uh you just I got a switch up in my cab and you would pull it and it would kill the tractor immediately supposed to. That's about it. So yeah, thanks. Walking through the pits and I have found a super stock diesel truck, the Old and Hostile. Now, they do not run multi-turbochargers. They run a big single. I'm guessing around a 5 in to 5 1/2 in uh turbocharger on the truck. So, let's take a quick look at it. It's a crazy build.
Heat up here.
We definitely have some great running vehicles. here tonight in Richland Center. Think it's going to be an awesome show. It'll be a great test and tune for everybody to kind of knock the rust off before the season starts this year. And now we're doing some track prep.
From what I've seen in the pits so far, it looks like we've got a couple hot farm tractors, a super stock diesel truck, a Protock diesel truck, and some 26 diesel trucks and more. So, it's going to be a great show. A combination between stock and not stock, so to speak. So, Jeff from Wisconsin.
truck. Please make your way through the track and get to the track. Quicker.
He clicker from Norah.
And on the grand sand side from Palmyra.

And Cody Carlson, he just had to drive it like he stole it.
By far the fastest truck and the longest distance that we've had in the class so far.
A 2018 Silverado Duramax Power.
And we can use a pulloff tractor to help out.
Get the side panel up along the grand hand side.
and the track patrol.
So on the infield side, Dylan Van in the transmission or the rear end of the 4430 and the Big Bad Wolf on the grand stand side Lowski from Waterton. Sound three is 01 and 05. 30.
We're currently heading down to the starting line because I see that old and hostile has started up. This thing is a beast. The 5,000 horsepower billet Duramax.
It turns heads.
If you thought that flame was cool, just wait till a little bit when it goes down the track. So now in between a couple classes, we're still pulling, but we got some dirt bike jumps.
>> Here he goes off the lift. Captain Morgan, the man of Anthony Murray, is on the YZ 450 on that brand new.
>> Here he goes. It's Anthony Murray.
City Dirt Drags fans, what do you think of the back flip?
All the way over the top 360°.

Some unfortunate luck for the old and hostile super stock diesel truck.
Hopefully they'll be able to figure out what the problem is. The announcer said that it sounded like the pipe on the intercooler had come off. So maybe a clamp. Uh feel bad because it's such a nice truck. Hopefully they're able to get it fixed and possibly come back to make another run. And we hope that they have a great season this summer.
Oh yeah, there we go.
>> It looks like we just have a few more hooks left. We've got about one more truck on this side, which I'd have to guess is a work stock diesel truck or a 26. Uh, definitely not stock. And then it looks like there's some more stock diesel or street diesel trucks on the other side that got to run yet. And possibly a couple more farm tractors.
And that'll wrap up the show.
We're going to watch, I believe, one more hook. I think this is it. Last hook of the night on the announcer side and that will be it.
Yep. He broke his drive shaft. Let's go check it out. Yes. I'm going to run.
Let's go check this out.
>> Drive set. The drive shaft has left the chat, folks.
Well, that is going to wrap up today's video from Richland Center, Wisconsin with the Hub City Dirt Drags test and tune tractor pull.
