A broken valve spring causes complete loss of compression in an engine cylinder, as the spring is essential for maintaining proper valve operation and sealing the combustion chamber during the compression stroke.

HOW BAD IS MY CHEAP SPORTS CAR ?Added:
So, welcome back to another video, where we will continue getting Silvia sorted.
If you haven't seen my previous episode, go check it out.
So, Silvia is my cheap 2007 Audi TT Mark II. Somebody messaged me and asked me if I'd be interested in a TT for spares or repairs. She has a valid MOT and she has some issues and they could be very, very bad. But, let's see. It's only got 101,000 mi. It has a stereo delete. We could try and fix those ourselves. This definitely could be worth saving. It's not running its best, as you can see.
But, let's dive into it and check that out. So, now I'm interested. And then the whole world is interested. The whole world is interested. Let's have a look at this.
>> [snorts] >> So, as you can see, Silvia is not running her best tool and we do need to get her sorted. But, I just want to show you something very quickly and that is what sort of scan tool do I use? Well, I use XTool a lot and this is my D7S and this has been a great tool and I use this for doing Haldex services, all sorts of things like that cuz the procedure on doing it on this is so straightforward. It's just press next, next, next. It just makes some complicated task very, very simple.
I've had this for a few years now.
Let me just show you it very quickly. I think I might even have a video review of it.
So, I just wanted to show you it. Very good.
It's a plug the cable into the top, plug it into the car.
But, now XTool have updated it. It is now wireless. It's the D7W.
So, that is the D7S I used to use. This is the D7W, which is wireless.
I'll just compare them to side by side for you.
They are very, very similar. Obviously, it's a little bit more modern. It's a bit brighter.
It's showing all loaded up the same.
But, [snorts] the key thing is it's wireless, hence why it's got the W.
So, as I said, wireless. So, it hasn't got that port on the top like the 7S.
I'm not knocking the 7S. The 7S is brilliant, and I probably will continue to use it.
But, there's our wireless adapter. You also get a quick start guide.
You get all the plugs you need to charge it up with.
And there's one you can you can connect it if you need be. There must be an adapter somewhere.
And there is another cable there, so you can connect it. So, as I said, I am not knocking the 7S. The 7S has been an absolute legend of a tool.
It literally does any vehicle you could possibly think of and more.
There's stuff on here I've never even heard of.
So, I'm going to let that do its updates. Let's go and plug this into Silvia, and I can show some of the things that this can do. But, while I get this all loaded up, take a quick look at this where I done a compression test. So, cylinder one, we have got compression.
Cylinder two, unfortunately, the compression has left the chat. We were absolutely nothing. This is going to be our issue. Cylinder three is looking good, and also cylinder four is looking good.
So, with the wireless dongle all plugged into the car, you can see this icon here has gone green, which means we are connected to the car.
So, now we're going to do a quick auto scan and see how bad this engine is.
There is a few things that are unplugged, so I am expecting some sort of codes to come up, but let's see what it shows us.
So, now you can choose where you want to go and choose the normal expo or help.
We're just going to go normal on this cuz we want to just get into the engine and see what the engine is showing us.
So, there's all the details of the car, which is correct. So, you can do an automatic scan where it will go through every single module on the vehicle. I like full system diagnostics cuz I like to choose what module I want to get into without waste my time going through other ones. They go all wheel drive.
That's a brilliant one. I always use that. But, we want to go to engine, but as you can see it does literally everything. It is brilliant. And there's more features in this as well. You've got the common features here. So, you can do the oil resets.
There's the battery warning, gearbox matching, even at the EA33's electric fan start matching. So, if you do them, place generator, read mileage, sunroof, steering exhaust, headlamp, suspension, gearbox matching.
Yeah, absolutely brilliant. So, we'll come out of that. We'll go into this.
Let's have a look at the engine and see what it's showing us. As I said, I have got some things unplugged, so I am expecting it to pick up something. So, let's have a quick read.
There you go. Airflow sensor, yes.
And that is because that is built into the the cover and that is in the boot. So, that is why that is coming up with that code. So, this XTOOL is telling us already the problem cuz we know that that is not connected and it is telling us there's an issue with that and it's cuz it's not connected. Make sure to go and click on the link below to go and check out XTOOL's website to see what other products they got, but I do recommend the 7W. It is absolutely wicked. But, there may be another scan tool that's more suitable for your usage and your budget. So, go and check them out. Link in the description.
So, with the compression test carried out and we can clearly see there is an issue with number two.
As you can see cylinder two is completely dead. So, let's have a look into that and see what that actually is.
So, now I'm interested. And the whole world is interested. The whole world is interested. Let's have a look at this.
If you're enjoying the video, why don't you consider subscribing to the channel and give this video a like. Yeah, I can see the problem.
All right, so if you look down here you can see you have these little lifters. See these little things here?
I'll get it to you see this one doesn't have it anymore.
But if it ain't there, where is it?
See, got a thing, got a thing, got a thing, no thing. No thing. No thing.
So, we've got no compression there.
Cuz that valve spring is broken.
Can hear it? Can hear it? Yeah, I can hear it. Yeah.
Problem solved. Problem solved.
Mate, spring.
Yeah, there's something not right about that spring. I'll just glue that back together.
>> [snorts] >> There should be some collets.
So, this is how we're at the moment.
That's all off, that's all unplugged.
We are at this.
So, uh I have one concern is that well, I've missing rocket arm, a rocker arm.
I can't see it anywhere in there.
So, I don't know whether the previous mechanics pulled it out because I'm not it.
But yeah, where is that rocker gone? Has the previous mechanic that did diagnosis and did say cylinder two is down and removed it? Cuz I can't see it anywhere.
So, I might have to dig a little bit deeper into it to see where it is. So, I had a good look all in the head to see if I could find that missing rocker. I was getting a little magnet in there just to see if it'll pick up anything and I got my torch and absolutely nothing. It's almost like it's just totally disappeared.
This is just blowing my mind.
I do hope that whoever looked at this car before me had just removed this because it just does not make sense that it's just not there.
These are the only bits that I could find in the head. The spring and the cap. That is it. No collets, no lifters.
Rocker arm is not exactly a small thing and I should be able to see that. So, this is how we currently are and at the moment I think we've got three choices of what we do.
We can either take this head off and rebuild it, check it out, put the missing spring, maybe fix the valve if the valve's gone, put new collets in it, and send it.
Or we could get a a good second-hand head which we can just drop on which we know is good.
Or the third option which I have been thinking about a lot recently is a bit of a gray area and that is to put on a brand new head from China.
These are only about 230 pounds and that's everything. That's valves in, springs in, rockers in. That's a a built head ready to pop on. Obviously, we'll have to put a cam chain on and new cam bearings and and transfer some of the bits over.
But, is that an option? Comment below what you think we should do. Should we fix this head, put a good second-hand head on, or should we go Chinese? Join me next time where we'll get this head off and we'll have a look at it and see how bad it actually is. But, thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next one.
