Humans usually get infected by breathing in dust contaminated with rodent urine, saliva, or droppings, especially in closed or poorly ventilated spaces like basements, cabins, or storage rooms. The important thing to know, this is not usually a person-to-person virus. Most cases come directly from rodent exposure, although a few rare human-to-human transmissions have recently been reported. [music] Early symptoms can look just like the flu, fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and chills, but the virus can quickly become severe. In the Americas, it can lead to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a life-threatening lung infection that makes breathing difficult.
