Our Eastern Indigo Snake LAID EGGS!!Added:
All right, you guys aren't eating each other, right? Prano pup, are you next to No, of course. Did you eat him? No, he's just back there. Hello. Oh, hi there.
Hi.
>> a surprise for you. Wait here.
>> Oh, you're heading over there? No, I have something in my hand. Snake poop?
Dang it, I should have done that. No, it's not snake poop.
>> Okay, okay. An egg from a woma python?
>> It's not a woma python egg. Oh, but it is an egg? Maybe. Here, close your eyes.
I'm just going to see if you can even recognize what it is.
Oh my gosh, it's an Eastern indigo egg.
>> Yep. Holy cow, we got more of them?
>> Yeah. What? Oh my gosh, it's just as rough as the other clutch.
Can't three. Oh my Wow, they're so long.
Yeah, they're huge. Like, look at this thing. And then, look at that. It's massive. Like, that's the biggest part of her body. Wow.
>> And it takes up most of it. Like, She said makes big eggs. Holy cow. You could also use these eggs as like emery boards. Oh, you totally could. Yeah, and look, they're sticking to the moss.
They're so like grippy, I guess you could call them. Are all of these good?
1 2 3 4, this one looks >> they like they kind of That one's kind of sluggy, but I would still incubate it. It still looks good.
>> Yeah, I mean, in the past we've gotten eggs. Did she get them >> Okay, did she eat today? No, I didn't feed anybody today.
>> Okay, we'll have to feed her extra cuz that's a lot of calcium.
>> I mean, do you feel anything you want to feel? Yeah, feels like she got them all out, too. I just feel some bubbles. All right, good job, girl. We'll give you a snack tomorrow. Holy cow, yeah, last time we got slugs. They were smooth, like bull snake eggs.
>> Yeah. So, I wonder if this is an indication that even these weird-looking yellow ones are good, too. Holy cow, and the other clutch, which >> see in the other video, too.
>> we can show it here, too. It's been a week old now, I think. Yeah. Plus or Eight eggs from our other female.
There's your sneak peek, guys. Video won't come out until they hatch, though.
>> Yeah. So, you'll see these eggs before you'll see those eggs.
>> Yeah. Hush, we set them up.
>> Sure. Okay. Take a look at these eggs up close. Isn't that crazy? They're just as rough as they look. That's like really coarse sandpaper. Oh, and you're filming me.
>> Footage of Emily. Awesome. Thanks.
Filming eggs.
>> Well, I have to get like this close-up shot because it's hard to see on the camera, but look at that weird texture.
All right, let's get them set up. Shout out to Jude and Hazel who are providing the egg box in today's video.
>> for reptiles.
>> it. It's so cute. I think they gave this to us at a show, but since it has positive locks, we can use it. It's great.
>> those Sterilite 28-quart tubs all the time for uh >> container. Decent size eggs, anyway. So, since the first clutch, which again you guys don't know of yet, but we the way we set it up was we just poured out dry perlite, and we laid the eggs on top.
Get away. And then, instead of mixing water with the perlite itself, we just placed these in and then poured water around them.
>> Yep. And the eggs that are cooking and have been cooking for about a couple weeks now, a week, they look great. So, I think we're going to do the same thing here. This basically allows the water to drain to the bottom and just kind of suspend the eggs on a dry medium above the water without coming into contact with it directly. So, this will keep humidity levels high inside, but the eggs themselves dry. I think you should put a little bit more in the corners.
>> to look.
>> Cuz I can't see anything at the bottom yet.
>> a little more in the corners here.
Unfortunately, because of how textured these eggshells are, we can't draw anything on them. A fan in the zoo today asked if we could do a butterfly theme during meet and greet, which we'll have to remember that, cuz maybe we'll do another clutch in this video.
>> clutch or something, maybe.
>> Oh, that would work. Should we do two clutches in this video?
>> Yeah, sure. Ooh, okay, let's do that.
>> can still do every once in a while I'm just an egg video.
>> Yeah, yeah. And the other indigo clutch is going to be from start to finish laying to hatching. So, this one will just be the eggs being laid and I think that's all we can do, right?
>> you have to put a line on them. Old school the way of doing it.
>> Yeah, so boring just doing a line, but there's no way I'm going to be able to do that.
>> Wait, wait, wait. Emily, don't do that last one yet. I'm going to pull off my mic. It's going to get loud. Sorry, guys.
Okay, listen to it.
That's These are really rough eggs. There's your ASMR on Snake Discovery.
And the lid goes on and we have our very first Well, not first, our second ever.
I'm so not used to these.
>> second eggs of the year? Uh yeah, of the year. We had the mangrove babies earlier this year.
>> So, we have our first babies of the year, but not our first eggs of the >> is our first egg video of the year. By the way, there's a lot of people I've talked to who are like, "How does Emily write upside down so well?" And I'm like, "Years of practice." Yeah, really.
Is she cat three? Cat three with you know the way off your top Oh, you're just going to do cat three.
>> Yeah, we only have one male. We only have one male, yeah. Yep, and they were laid on 4 11. So, they're due These take longer, don't they? Uh let me look.
Yeah, confirmed. My memory wasn't serving me incorrectly. They take 90 to 100 days to hatch.
>> So, these may be the first eggs we've gotten of the year, but they're probably not going to be the first babies that were hat laid and hatched of this year.
No, in comparison hognose snake eggs take about 60 days. So, that's an extra month for eastern indigo eggs to incubate.
>> And that's on the shorter end, 90 to 100 days.
>> can go up to 125, did you say you saw?
That's insane. So, we'll go on the lower end. Let's stick with 100, you think?
>> Yeah, I think so.
>> due date. Okay, Google, what is 100 days from today?
July 20th.
Oh my gosh, yours is a girl voice? Yeah.
Mine's a guy voice. Yeah, they both agree though, July 20th is 100 days from today. Nice. Just pulled that out of my butt. Also, you have a guy's voice for your Google? Yeah. Weird.
>> a girl's voice.
>> Yeah, it's supposed to be a girl. Yeah, it's a guy.
>> No, it's a it's a girl. No, maybe >> Okay, people in the comments. Is your Alexa or Google voice a guy or a girl?
Yeah, let's run a poll on this. Maybe maybe we'll maybe we'll have to figure out when this goes up and we'll do like an Instagram poll or something like that.
>> we go. Okay.
>> if you have a guy or a girl Google / Siri voice. If I remember, I will post a poll. By the way, there is a new feature on YouTube where if you join the memberships, you get special access to early viewings on videos and you get a special little like Snake Discovery emoji that I colored to different morphs of hognoses next to your name and you get access to polls. So, maybe I'll have it be our first ever YouTube membership poll. Yeah, we can do it with the video most likely at that point.
>> That'll work. I don't know exactly how it works, but this is this will be my way to learn. There we go. Okay, now let's put them in our incubator. Our incubator is a little atypical as you saw earlier. We're just going to set these right in the middle of this rack.
Cuz that's perfect 74Β° I think is what it was. Yeah, but okay, the heat panel is the back left quadrant. So, does that mean I should have this like here near the front so it's still near that heat panel?
>> pull the other one forward. Like that?
>> Yeah, I didn't realize it was back like that and then let's put this like that and then we should be good. All right, sounds good and now we let them sit. So, let's find some more eggs for this video. Well, what perfect timing. It's literally the next day and our staff told us that there is a surprise waiting for us in our blue beauty exhibit.
>> It's actually 2 days later cuz technically it's midnight.
>> yeah, that's true. I guess technically it's like midnight at 1:00 if anything, but also before we open this up, shout-out to the Snake Discovery coffee cuz we're using this to stay awake right now. So, you can buy some right now at snakediscoverystore.com.
Anyway, blue beauties. Let's see, they usually lay under their water dish, so I'm going to guess it's under there.
>> I mean, there's one up there. I don't see any other ones. Uh, is there one in there?
>> Yeah, is there one in there? We can't really see any in there.
>> It's hard to tell. We're going to have to move that. No, okay. Is there anything under here?
Oh Oh my goodness. There's mama. Oh, she's wrapped around them. Hi, mama.
Did you just lay some eggs?
>> Did she get them out?
>> Hello. Let's see. I know I'm sorry. I'm going to take you out cuz I want to make sure you got all your eggs out. These guys are great at pushing them out though. Yeah, she got them all out. No problem.
>> seen them. Oh, you're flooding it. Get the eggs out.
>> Oh, shoot. Oh, no. Come here, eggs.
Sorry. Okay, there we go. Okay, they were like that. Well, and mama's deciding you're you're in charge of her eggs, I guess.
>> All right, she is getting the babies.
>> Yay, I have the eggs. Let's wipe off some of the water there. These look fantastic, too. It's like a really weird choked out slug. Yeah, I wonder if that was like the first one she laid. Usually the slugs are the first one. So, I bet she just got this one out of the way, but it's like still half good. So, I guess we'll incubate it just in case.
How many do we have? Including the iffy one, 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 baby blue beauties that are in egg. Good job. Yeah, good point. This is the must be from our new mama.
Wait, no. Is that screwed up face mama?
Yeah, the new one has the other white >> totally the mama that's got the messed up Oh, she she is. Yeah, that's that's new mama. I was going to say, they're not yellow eggs like our original mama always lays. Okay, that makes sense cuz the new one always lays white eggs, the original lays yellow eggs for some odd reason.
>> Whatever reason.
>> Yeah, so we're still expecting yellow eggs from the original female in here at some point.
>> two cuz you can see both snouts. The snout, one head, and then you can see just the tip of a nose. Aw. Up on top.
>> Yeah, she'll lay eggs here soon enough.
but for now we have the newest female's beautiful clutch to set up. Look at this weird stringy thing.
Oh, weird.
>> Yeah, there's they're like attached like sausages. We had a clutch like this last year, too. I mean, they hatched just fine, but anyway, kind of fun to point out. We have our incubation box Yep.
ready to go with perlite.
>> a hundred times how to set up perlite, so >> Yeah. So, it's Just check another video if you want to know.
>> Exactly. We just preset it up for you guys. We're going to plop in these babies. Let's see what kind of nestle them in a little bit here. Oh, kind of fill it in, give them some support.
Maybe I'll add some to the middle there.
There.
>> has a little They all have little connectors on them.
>> do. That's so bizarre.
>> They were like, yeah, like sausages coming out of her. Yeah.
>> They're all connected.
>> Aw, this is perfect. Okay, so like I said earlier in this video, we actually had Did you get that fly? Did. Wow.
>> expecting that. It's cuz he's sleepy.
It's midnight. He was just looking for a place to spend the night.
>> First fly I've seen so far this year and I killed it. Yeah. Sorry.
Anyway, we had a request earlier this weekend during meet and greet asking if we could do a butterfly theme for a clutch. So, I think we should do that with these beautiful snakes.
>> Good luck.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Good enough. Wait, we'll do a teeny little >> to say you need one in that middle one.
We'll do a little skipper or something right there. There we go. Good enough.
So, at what point do I tell you I know nothing about butterflies, so the whole guessing thing is not going to work on this one?
>> I will admit this was a tough theme to draw. I did need a reference guide for this one. Like I know monarch and tiger swallowtail, and I'm guessing that's a monarch. Uh this was my attempted monarch cuz it has the stripes. That was my uh painted lady. Okay. This is my red admiral and a swallowtail. Okay. And what other ones do I know? This is a comma butterfly. Looks like a dead butterfly. They're supposed to look like dead leaves.
>> Well, that makes sense. Is that a green butterfly? That was the green >> butterfly? Okay, this is the green hairstreak. This is the brimstone butterfly. This one is the silver-washed fritillary. Okay.
>> This one's just generic butterfly. I don't know, I ran out of ideas. A skipper or something, you said.
>> I think I was calling it a skipper, yeah. This is the holly blue and this is the common blue. What's that one? The one on the bottom left.
>> That one? I think that was my orange tip butterfly, but that doesn't really make sense. I don't really know what that one was. Uh >> What's the one next to it? Uh that one I did have one in mind. That one was the tortoiseshell. All right. Well, everybody out there who are entomologists, let us know how Emily did cuz I don't know. They all look like butterflies to me.
>> Perfect. We're just going with yellow butterfly, green butterfly, blue butterfly, and orange >> butterflies. There's a second blue butterfly. They all want to look like dead things. We're going to go with it.
>> Or they use it as cryptic coloration.
No, not cryptic.
>> Cryptic, yeah. Oh, I know. Uh Batesian mimicry. They try to look like something scary that they aren't, yeah.
>> Or they look like they're venomous or poisonous, so don't eat me.
>> Aposematic coloration, yeah. All the fun camouflage out there. Blue.
I just commented on how well you were doing with the Oh, dear.
>> [laughter] >> There, blue. I think earlier in this video. Yeah, blue beauty. Uh we're going to do We don't really have an official name. It's Romeo and Juliet and then the new one with an underbite.
>> What's a good underbite name?
What do we name her? It's bulldog? We'll figure out. Put your comments in the put what we should name a good underbite girl. Oh, for now write the new one.
>> Yeah. They were laid on That's wow, you are maybe you can only do this when you're getting enough sleep cuz yeah >> late. Oh my gosh.
>> 10 right now so >> Yeah, okay. So these were laid on 4:05 to Okay, Google. What is 55 days past April 5th? 55 days past April 5th is May 30th.
May 30th.
>> There we go. Do 5:30.
All right.
Where's my cap? We'll be back from our vacation by then. Yes, we will. But for now, should we put them in the incubator here in the store?
>> Might as well. I'm not driving over to snake house after this. And then I don't even have to stop recording cuz I can just go like this. Look at that. Go over here. Oh, you do need to unlock it though. Yes, I do. So that I will stay over here for What? You're not going to show everybody the code?
>> blurry. Wow, that's really blurry. Are we going to fit these? This is a deep bin. We'll just shove them up there cuz I don't think they'll fit.
Oh, they actually fit.
>> fit perfectly.
>> Put them down here so that kids can read the top. Here we go. We have eggs >> officially incubating in the store.
>> Yeah. Was that the end of this video?
>> That's going to wrap up today's video.
Yeah, our double clutch special. I'm very excited for our first ever year of breeding Eastern Indigo snakes. And yeah, the first clutch we had will be in a a start to finish video. So we won't really release that video until the babies hatch too from those eggs. But you get to see the second clutch laid.
Yeah. And we will absolutely film when those babies We also had a lot of people this year asking about VBBs so I don't even know if we need to wholesale them this year. Oh, yeah. That's true. We There's so many people that were like, "Do you got VBBs available?" after we had already wholesale them so. a lot >> people who want blue beauties. And understandably so, they're great snakes.
>> Yeah, amazing snakes. Thank you guys very much for watching and help us congratulate and cross your fingers and your toes that the Eastern Indigos hatch. So far, they look good, but I need all of the luck in the world for those to fully incubate and end up hatching in May. And give us a good name suggestion for the new bulldog VBB.
>> Oh yeah, their mom. Yeah, we do need a good name idea for them. Thanks again, everybody, and we'll see you next time.
Okay, I think it's time to go home. It's really Well, I can't even see. It's really dark out there. It's kind of late.
>> Now, the the driveway is lit up by our parking lot light, but it's dark out there. All right, let's just stop recording. Let's end this video. It's too late. Let's go to bed.
