Creative nonfiction is a genre that combines factual elements with literary techniques, allowing writers to explore real-life experiences while maintaining artistic integrity. In this film, a struggling writer creates a screenplay about a high school student who has an affair with her teacher and escapes to a cabin, using her own life experiences as inspiration. The narrative demonstrates how creative nonfiction writers transform personal experiences into compelling stories while maintaining authenticity, as the protagonist's journey from captivity to freedom mirrors the writer's own creative struggles and personal growth.

Added:Okay, so there's this girl. She's in high school. She's taken up with her English teacher and he loves her poetry, you know, which is how the whole thing starts. And it's like that whole kind of like see me after class thing. And he takes her away to this cabin that he has, which is in the country >> to bucket.
>> What does What does bucket mean?
>> You know, >> no, I don't. And he keeps her there for 3 years. It just kind of makes her sit there at a typewriter and write and you'd think she'd be miserable obviously, but instead she's sort of under this like spell of creative happiness.
>> Weird.
And and then they bucket.
>> No, I mean they don't have sex if that's what that completely [ __ ] expression means. I mean, she has her own room.
>> I don't think I follow this, Ella.
Well, I think it's going to be really different once I've actually sort of like fleshed the whole thing out and put it down on paper and hopefully it's going to be like fast-paced and really funny.
>> Funny.
>> I find the theft and abuse of miners funny. Anyway, I'm sure that you don't really feel like hearing about this. I'm sorry.
>> Yeah. No, I don't really feel like it.
>> Well, I'm glad you're being so honest.
I'll try not to be offended.
>> No, no, I want to hear about it. Um, no, I do. I just I came here to ask you something. Okay. What is it?
>> Well, um, >> okay. Yes, I will marry you. No, I don't do anal.
>> What?
>> I'm sorry. That's not even a funny joke.
It's just that I've been working all night and my brain is decaying.
>> Oh, well, my room is decaying. Uh, quite literally. There is a mold that's growing underneath my bed. It's like the size of Texas if my floor was a map. and it's giving me a headache and smells really bad and I just I can't deal with it right now.
>> Oh no.
>> So, how did it get there?
>> Well, it was Well, it wasn't me. I I didn't you know there was nothing to do with like my hygiene or anything like that. It's cuz my room is right next to the bathroom.
>> So, every time a toilet flushes, there's a little bit of water that seeps in. I don't know if it's underneath the crack or or what the deal is, but um it gets into my carpet and now his mold is growing. And I just kind of, you know, want to yell at the people in the bathroom and tell them to just stop flushing the toilet cuz that would really help me a lot.
>> But that would be really really selfish if you told everybody to stop flushing the toilet.
>> Yeah, I'm a selfish guy.
I get the feeling maybe you're asking me if you can sleep on my floor.
>> Yeah. Uh just for the night. Just wanted to ask that.
>> Okay. Um yes, but why don't you want to sleep at your vets?
Is it that would involve sleeping with your vet?
>> Well, it's not really that I mind so much. Um it's more just um the part afterwards where I have to talk to her.
That's so mean.
>> Oh, I I would say it's just honest. I'm just being honest.
>> Yeah, that seems really sweet to me. I mean, like kind of like stupid sweet, but I think she's sweet.
>> Yeah. No, she's sweet. She's a But she's a cinema studies major.
>> What? What's wrong with that? I mean, >> well, >> that's such a weird thing for you to say.
>> Oh, no, Ella. No, I wasn't that wasn't supposed to be like a snide remark.
You're a creative writing major. That's a completely different It's something.
It's two different categories.
>> I guess I'm just like have been writing this screenplay and I'm sensitive and I'm feeling feelings.
>> Do you You're feeling feelings?
>> Yeah. If I had a band, I would call it feeling feelings.
>> Yeah. Yeah. If I If I had a band, I would call it the Shadow Band.
>> That's good. That's really good.
>> Is that nice?
>> Yeah. I like that a lot. So tell me why you think cinema studies majors are such a jerk.
>> Well, it's just they're a bunch of pricks and everyone I've met like is an [ __ ] and I don't know, they just sort of, you know, diddle around with a camera and write papers that use the word uh hijgey.
>> Are you trying to say hijgemony?
>> Yeah, that word. I can't They use it all the time and I can't even say it. That's like the token word that people use to like lampoon like you know like liberal arts school pretentiousness. And I think you could probably be more creative.
>> Are you okay?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. It's just >> like are you are you uncomfortable down there?
>> Um no. No.
>> Okay. Um cuz you know cuz you can sleep up here if you want.
>> I mean um you sure about that? I mean I >> I've been known to kick in bed a lot.
>> I mean >> kick in my sleep.
>> I mean I don't know. You could I'd suggest that we go head to foot, but that would make the problem >> even worse. Yeah.
>> Yeah. Cuz then you'd kick me in the head.
>> Um I mean, I don't know if you'd like rather like die than sleep in my bed, but >> No. I mean, I'm cool with sleeping in your bed. I mean, it's just a question like, >> no.
>> Do you want to risk it?
Nope. Here.
>> It just looks really uncomfortable on the floor.
>> Yeah. Well, you know, it's a floor.
>> Okay.
>> Oh, sorry.
>> Yeah. This is my dog. Okay.
>> His name is dog.
Okay. Okay.
>> Is that good?
>> Yeah, totally.
Sorry. Sorry.
>> My bad.
>> Okay. Are you all right?
>> Well, what?
>> Okay.
>> We went like that.
>> Yeah. That's awesome.
>> It would be.
>> Yeah.
>> Good compromise.
>> Okay. Is that okay for you?
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Okay. I'm good. You good?
>> Yeah. Totally. Um, you can get the light if you want to.
>> Okay.
>> Or if you can, can you reach in?
>> Yeah.
Thanks.
>> Okay. Um, sleep well.
>> Yeah. Good night.
>> It's crazy. You know, one day she realizes this is just not what she wants. And she sees an opportunity, busts out of the house, she's hiding under the porch, she can hear his footsteps above her, and she's just, you know, she's freaking out. She knows he'll really hurt her if he finds her.
She sees an opportunity and she just makes her getaway. She runs.
>> And so you left your things to rot around the edges of my room. A fish in a pan, a sock, and an old shirt of your father's. I don't even know him, but I know you. And the way you broke three bones in the wrist of my heart.
>> All right.
Thank you, Siri. We'd like to start us out with some feedback for Siri. I want you to let Siri know what works in this poem, what uh what's strong in the voice of this poem. I also want you to let her know what's where it's weaker, where there are gaps.
All right. Um I'll start. Siri, I think you do an excellent job of capturing the way a person can be present even in their absence. I think that can become trit, but I think you walk a fine line and you walk it well.
>> Uh Steve, uh I thought it was trit sometimes. It's like it's just so like everything is recycled. Um, I don't know where it all comes from, but I think it's this like wasteland of Americana imagery uh that no one should have to visit.
>> The one line that's way longer than the rest. So, the you left your things to rot around the edges of my room. I think if you cut it off, you left your things to rot and made the line break there would be a lot more You can talk about the wrist and relate it to the heart, but you say the wrist of my heart and I don't know that was I think a moment a moment of trightness and I just I think you can you can use the imagery of the wrist tied to the heart.
Just don't please don't use the word.
>> And you say I don't even know which I I know a lot of people who say I don't even know all the time. And I think that's like a really cliche phrase, but you could you could easily fix that.
>> What do you think?
>> Um, I didn't really like prepare anything about the poem, but I like I like it a lot. I think that um it's like you move from your own experience into like a more like a very real experience into like a more mystical feeling experience. I guess that the part that and I liked the bones of my heart. I thought that that was like a cool mixed metaphor. The part that I had a problem with was a fish in a pan just cuz like I didn't get where that image came from.
Really?
>> I had the same thought.
Uh Siri, I think it would be good if you held off until we finished the discussion before you jump in.
>> Um it's really it's really quick.
>> All right.
>> Um the thing about a fish in a pan is that that actually happened. Um, my ex-boyfriend left a fish and a pan in my room and I was just writing what I see, which is the way I work.
>> Do you want to hear something weird?
>> Sure.
>> Okay. Do you know Chris who lives upstairs? No, he lives downstairs from me.
>> Yeah, the really cute one with a really amazing aunt.
>> Whatever. He's okay. But listen to this.
This is disgusting. He has mold growing in his room.
>> Ew.
>> I know.
>> You know, I knew I smelled something this morning. You know what? He's really cute though. He's staying in your in your room.
>> He has really nice eyes.
>> Yeah, I think he's kind of cute. I don't know.
>> Are you, >> you know, speak into him?
>> No. I mean, I don't know, but I like don't want to get my hopes up because I kind of just feel like we're friends, you know, >> and I just like don't want to get over excited about things.
>> He's like I don't know. How do you even know him?
>> Well, you know, he he's friends with Patrick from the fourth floor. And Patrick and I had that thing at the beginning of the year.
>> Yeah, I know. You told me all about that.
>> That's weird. I'm usually such a private person, but I feel like I told everybody about that. It's just like Patrick's nature.
>> Yeah.
>> You know, like he's totally not like any other guy I've ever had any like had a thing with.
>> Yeah. You told me it felt like he was just like really apathetic.
>> He's totally apathetic. It's like he didn't care. You know, like every other boyfriend I've had is like worshiped me and like pampered me and like been really much more into me than I've been into them. Yeah, Patrick, you know, it was like I was like a sandwich. It's like you could like take me or leave me or something like >> I don't know.
>> Do you have more detergent? I'm like almost Do you have more?
>> I think I do upstairs. Do you think we can make that?
>> Maybe. You know, we both have really small. Do you want to share?
>> Yeah.
>> Here, stick your stuff in here. Yeah.
You told me that Patrick was just like like no guy we'd ever dealt with before.
>> Yeah.
>> Anyway, I'm just not sure about Chris. I find him really really hard to read.
>> I mean, I Yeah, I can see why you'd think that. And it's his eyes. They're very He's like a really sensitive Yeah.
piercing eyes. He's a really sensitive like serious guy all the time. But I, you know, when I was hanging out with him with Patrick, like he's a really great He's funny. He's intelligent and he's really cute. So you have my vote and it's a Democratic one, of course.
>> That's a really good joke.
>> Anyway, yeah. I don't know. I guess I'll just like see where things go. Yeah.
>> Anyway, I bet he's into you. I really do. I don't know. I just I I don't know.
I mean, he's been staying in my bed, but it's kind of like who knows if that's because he's got >> I bet he has feelings. I mean, we all have feelings.
>> Feelings for you, Ella. Oh, God. You can be so up to sometimes.
>> Whatever.
>> What do we want to say? This is whites and colors. Should we just say colors?
>> I think so. I think white's a color.
What time is it?
>> It's like time for you to get a watch.
I'm sorry, but the maintenance people haven't come to my dorm room yet. Fix the mole. Kind of just crash here on the floor yet.
>> Don't be stupid. Get out of bed.
>> Not asleep anyway because you hear the like disgusting music that the neighbors are doing.
>> Yeah.
>> It's like Pulsing house music. It's horrible.
>> I know. The wo of being in the dorm.
>> How was your day?
>> It was okay.
I had a terrible lesson.
>> Really bad.
>> Yeah, it's just my hands really stiff and just I don't know. Wasn't in the zone.
>> Yeah. I'm sorry. It's >> okay.
>> I wrote more scenes in my screenplay. Oh yeah.
>> Mhm.
>> That's cool.
>> So the girls like finally run away and she's running through the woods and she's all bloody and shaken up because she's been through so much that she's almost placid and very sort of deadened and she's waiting for a car. And a few pass but they don't stop. And finally a safari jeep, the canvas top kind, does stop. And the woman inside the car is like just a totally militant feminist.
Like the kind who thinks like all sex is rape and all men are pigs.
>> She sounds like the girls live in the women's collective off South Quad.
>> Yeah. But like even more intense. This woman is just so intense. She warns the girl not to call the police, that they won't help her escape her teacher, you know, because he's a man and he doesn't have the best interests of women at heart. And the girl is so impressionable that she believes this woman and she and the woman dresses the girl in like military fatigues. And the woman lets the girl loose on the streets of some small city.
>> Where is this taking place?
>> I don't know, like Maine or New Hampshire. I'm not sure.
I like really bad at geography because I missed geography here at my old school and like my first school and then I switched schools and they'd already done geography here. Wait, what's geography year?
>> It's like the year where you learn like state capitals and like countries and like just you know geography.
So I was left with like no knowledge of like what the world is shaped like.
>> Do you know my friend Edie? Do you know who that is?
>> Um no I don't think so.
>> She has brown hair and glasses and she's pretty and she's with me a lot.
Oh yeah, I think I know who you're talking about.
>> She like is she and her boyfriend who does not go to the school came up with this theory that I think is really funny which is like that you there are certain people in your life who you meet who you just don't think 30 or more people could confirm that they're alive.
Do you get that?
>> Um yeah. Wait, that they're alive?
>> That they exist? like that 30 or more people could not confirm that they exist. Like if you you couldn't find 30 or more people who'd be like, "Yeah, that person's a person."
>> So this is like a metaphysical thing.
Like it's kind of like >> I mean sort of but it's sort of just like that's a certain type of human being.
>> Huh? Yeah. I think I know that type >> which I think.
>> No.
>> Really?
>> Yeah. I think so.
>> You think I don't exist? Well, I don't think you don't exist, but I think 30 or more people maybe couldn't confirm your existence.
>> Does that offend you?
>> No, I don't. Well, should it?
>> No. No, it's just a certain Do you hear that music the neighbors are playing?
It's disgusting.
>> Come in.
>> Oh, hi, Professor Gibbird.
>> Hi, Ella. Uh, come in. Have a seat.
>> Is this an okay time to talk or >> Oh, I have a department meeting in about 15 minutes, so we'll have to cut it short.
>> Okay. I just wanted to ask you actually what the committee that was selecting people for the screenwriting workshop next semester. I just wanted to kind of know what they would be looking for.
>> Well, I'm not on that committee. Um, I do know they'll want fully realized work, really compelling stories.
>> Okay. Well, I'm writing something. We'll see how it goes.
>> You're writing a script?
>> I am. Yeah.
>> What's it about? Um, well, I'm like sort of working it out as I go, but the premise is that there's this girl who sort of started having an affair with her teacher in high school, and they've been sort of having this affair, and he takes her to this cabin, and she lives with him in the cabin for 3 years, and then she escapes, and it's sort of about her escape process across America.
>> She's in the cabin for 3 years.
>> Yeah.
>> Well, either the cabin's pretty remote or this woman is pretty stupid.
Hey, hey, hey, wake Yeah.
>> Hi, I'm home.
>> Feed him drinking.
>> Can you smell it?
>> Yeah.
>> The guy the people the people in my study group just like >> literally foisted it on me when we were done. It was like a literal It was a literal foisting. It was crazy.
>> How was your night?
>> Um, it's okay. Did you get a lot done?
>> Yeah, but not enough.
>> Did you you didn't study enough?
>> No, I got a little bit of work done, but I >> just got tired and >> fell asleep.
>> Got to go decided to go to bed early.
Do you want to switch sides? Do you want the outside?
What?
>> What are you wearing?
>> My tights.
I'm sorry I did that. That was like totally inappropriate and I don't know where it came from.
>> No problem, >> you know, and I don't want you to like take it personally. It's just like sometimes you're drunk, you know, a little drunk and you just like feel like making out and it's not a huge thing.
I mean, making out is cool, >> you know, and I wasn't like assuming that you're attracted to me, you know, like I wasn't making that assumption. I just I just, you know, >> I understand not being attracted to someone and just not wanting to make out.
>> It's not that I'm not attracted to you.
I mean, I am attracted to you enough to make out with you, but it's just I feel like I won't follow through and you might get upset.
>> What do you mean by follow through?
>> Yeah. I'll be like, "Hey, Ella, be my girlfriend."
>> Well, >> that's like not even what I want. Like that's like not what I want from anybody. It's just not like what I'm looking for, you know? Like sometimes you just like want to make out.
>> Yeah, totally.
I like making out.
Such a disgusting day.
>> I know. When's it going to be warm?
>> I don't know. It should all fall out.
>> So gross. What are you doing for the rest of the day?
I'll go to the library and studying and then I might watch some cable in my room.
>> How are you?
>> I'm okay.
>> Yeah, >> I've been working a lot on the screenplay.
>> Oh, cool. Last I remember the girls being followed by some radical android dwaran type in a canvas top jeep or something.
>> No, that lady dropped her off in the city >> in New York.
>> No, I think in like Portland, Maine. Oh.
So she meets this girl who's like this sort of young punk runaway and she really trusts this girl for some reason and so she explains her predicament to her and the girl wants to help. That's nice. So she lets her come to stay at her squat with her and they listen to lots of punk music and the punk girl wants to help the other girl, you know, stay in incognito.
So I don't know, the man is crafty and he could appear like at any time. So the punk girl dyes the girl's hair for her.
They go to a gas station bathroom where there's running water and she dyes her hair. Cool. And no one recognizes her.
It's a good disguise. Awesome.
I knew a guy in Portland. Maybe. Did you bone him? No, didn't know.
His weight went up and down a lot.
>> I am having an existential crisis.
>> Really?
I've had like a lot of those actually.
>> Yeah.
Yeah, but this one is pretty intense.
>> Really?
>> Yeah.
>> What about it?
>> Um I've just never felt this way before.
And um I uh I don't want to play piano anymore, >> even though that's like what you've always wanted to do.
>> Yeah, that's what I've always done. And it's like that was my life, you know.
But I got tendonitis freshman year and it just didn't stop being fun. I think about somebody like you and you seem to have things all figured out.
Your focus, you have a drive and you know what you want to do.
>> I guess so in a way, but I had a really bad existential crisis. So maybe, you know, that's when I figured a lot of things out this past summer. I had a really bad crisis and figured it out.
>> Oh, really?
>> Mhm.
>> And what did you figure out?
>> Um, >> in three words or less, >> I can't do that.
Um, I went Godword.
Yeah. Um, if you want to, you can like I don't know.
I don't want to be like a vulgar, but like if you want to, you could put your hand on my boob if you felt like it.
>> I mean, just cuz you never tried to. So, I was just like >> cuz I just kiss you.
>> Yeah.
I was just like noting that you never tried really to do anything more than kiss me.
>> I'm cool with just kissing.
>> I mean, I'm like >> uh Well, yeah. Well, here's here's my thing.
Just think like if we're not going to not going to have sex, >> um why even go down that path?
>> Uhhuh.
>> You know, it would make you know it just make more sense to just stick to kissing cuz >> kissing is like a nice form of communication >> between Yeah. between two friends.
>> Yeah.
>> I don't know. Um I just I want to communicate with you.
>> Okay.
>> If that makes any sense.
>> Yeah. No, that makes sense. I guess I just don't understand why you assume that I wouldn't have sex with you, >> you know.
You're not going to have sex with me because you're a virgin.
How do you know that?
>> You told me.
>> Did I? Really?
>> Yeah.
>> Are you serious?
>> Yeah. It was at the beginning of the year. It was like this two nights after we met one another. We were sitting in the soccer fields and I said I would tell you one embarrassing thing about myself if you told me one about one about you and you told me that.
>> And now I'm really embarrassed.
>> No, no, no. Don't be. I remember even though I I told you not to be embarrassed about it, it's not something to be embarrassed about. You just shouldn't have sex with me. I'm your friend. I'm not your your boyfriend. I'm not anyone's boyfriend. I don't intend to be anyone's boyfriend.
>> Yeah, but we're like really good friends.
>> Yeah, but that's not the same.
Your first time should be with like a guy who you've been with for at least like 6 months who you're dating and preferably if possible you should love the person.
>> Was that what it was like for you?
>> Oh god, no. But that would have been great. You know, besides, I think it's different for girls.
I'm sorry that I brought it up.
>> Whatever.
>> It's okay.
Is this the band that you wanted to see?
>> No. Who are these people? They're terrible.
>> They're really amazing.
>> The Johnny the Drippers. My man's on next. Bikeathon.
>> You said kiteathon. No, he said dyon.
Was it bikeathon?
>> Oh, cool.
>> Hey, >> you.
>> What's up?
>> What's up?
>> I can't hear anything.
>> I know what you're saying.
>> It's >> Do you remember me? Yes, I do.
>> You're Ty, right?
>> You're Ella?
>> Yeah, we met at that party where they set the kitchen counter on fire.
>> That [ __ ] was pretty sweet.
>> Yeah, it was awesome.
>> Are you having fun?
>> Yeah, I'm having a pretty good time. How about you?
>> No, not really. I think I'm going to go find my friend and go home, maybe.
>> Fair enough.
>> Are you in my psych class?
>> Yeah, I am. Yeah.
>> It's nice to see you.
>> Please, anytime.
>> I think I want to go home.
Why? The band hasn't even started yet. I love Vagina the Dripper and I want to mo.
>> No, I just I Chris is supposed to sleep in my room and I haven't unlocked the door for him.
>> We can sleep somewhere else. I can sleep with 30 other people who can verify his existence.
>> You're totally drunk. Stay here. Have fun. Just like have a good time. But I can't be here right now.
>> Leave me here.
>> Don't Don't Whatever me, please.
I love you.
>> Yeah. Hey, Ella. Hey. How's it going?
>> Okay. What's going on with you?
>> I don't know.
>> I don't know.
>> What's wrong?
>> I'm feeling crappy. I'm feeling really crappy cuz like I don't know. I've been hooking up with Chris and Chris, you know? Yeah. I mean, he didn't tell me, but I just I have a, you know, another sense, like a six sense about this kind of things, you know.
>> Totally. Totally.
>> So, I just knew, you know, remember when I was hooking up with, you know, Patrick?
>> Yeah. Well, we don't talk about that, but I just felt very dismissed.
>> That's exactly what I feel like. I feel very dismissed. I feel like he's just like >> threw me away like an old shoe or something.
>> Don't feel bad about it, though, because, you know, I know he really appreciates you as a person and he cares about you as a friend. And >> I'm sure he finds you really attractive, Ella. It's just that I don't even think it's worth it because I just the other night I just I heard him talking about women in this way that just really made me really uncomfortable.
>> What do you mean?
>> You know, I'm I'm old fashioned this way, but I I hate it when men talk about women in a way that's really sexual.
Like it's really objectifying.
>> Yeah, totally.
>> And he just >> did that.
>> Yeah. And the way he talks about sex, it's like >> I know. He makes it sound like he's like so experienced, >> right? Yeah, I'm sure. Well, I don't even know if he's experienced or not, but >> I just sex isn't glamorous, you know?
It's like he makes it sound so I don't know, just like organized and like it's it's not, you know, it's like awkward and messy and it's not clean and >> totally.
>> I don't know. I just the sex I just I can't imagine that it's like it's he says that it is.
>> Well, thank you. You make me feel so much better.
>> A thanks.
>> I really appreciate it.
>> I hope I can help, you know. Yeah, you help a lot. I When I first met you, I did not think that we'd be really good friends.
>> Really?
>> No, I didn't. I I found you to be like very >> tight.
>> Yes, totally. Totally. But you're not. I mean >> Oh, I am a little bit. But I really admire you.
>> Thank you.
>> You're really sweet, Ella.
>> Yeah.
>> Can I sleep over?
>> Yeah, sure. How come?
>> Just I feel so lonely recently, you know? I wish I had a roommate or something.
>> I know. I know.
>> He's my ex-boyfriend and I've never felt this unattractive and undesirable my whole life.
>> Are you serious? You're such a fox.
>> Well, thanks. But, you know, I think I rely on that. Like, I think I rely on men >> for like validation.
>> Exactly. I just And you don't seem like you live for that.
>> I mean, not really. I mean, I guess I'm not used to getting it, so I just don't.
>> But you have other fulfillments in your life, you know.
>> Yeah. I mean, other fulfillments.
Knitting, the Rupert Ever biography. I don't know.
I guess, you know, maybe it's because maybe it's cuz you have a better relationship with your father than I do with mine.
>> I I do love my dad, but I don't know.
>> You uh you'll figure it out.
>> Hope so.
>> Sleepover.
Yay.
Like the girl in the script, she's been adjusting to the sort of punk squatter life and she's even enjoying it. But it all comes to a crashing halt when she sees that the man, her teacher, her captor, has found her and tracked her down.
>> How did he do that?
>> He's very powerful.
>> Awesome.
>> So, they're hiding in a warehouse and the punk girl is using her street smarts to help hide the girl and they're sleeping on a bear mattress.
You done soon?
>> Yeah, I'm pretty much done.
>> Okay.
Do you want me to get you your towel?
>> I'm sure.
>> Okay. They're over there.
>> Okay.
Hello.
Hello. I can't believe you didn't get your hair wet.
>> Yeah, I know.
>> It's amazing.
>> Yeah. Well, it's like it's like you're Jesus and you can walk on water, only you're Edie and you can walk under the shower without getting your hair wet.
>> Mhm.
>> That's just what it's like.
Thank you for lending me a towel. I'm sorry that I didn't have one.
>> No, don't worry about it. As long as you wash your vagina. I >> Do you put soap in your vagina?
>> Uh, mostly.
>> I told Carly from downstairs that I don't usually wear underwear and she looked at me like I was from another planet.
>> Well, that's because she's a gremlin.
>> She's But she can be kind of nice. I mean, she's got an irritating voice, but she's a nice person.
>> No, she's a gremlin.
>> Okay. I mean, she's never done anything to me.
>> She's a gremlin.
>> She's She's pretty.
>> She's not pretty. She's really really weird looking and she's a gremlin.
>> One second, >> Harley. Girl, I got your nail clipper.
>> Ella, wait. Uh, just a second.
>> The table. It doesn't matter. I've seen you naked.
>> No, just just a >> Oh my god.
Oh, okay.
>> Hello. Um, >> Ella.
>> Okay. Bye. Come here. Bye. Talk.
>> Ella.
>> Okay. Bye, >> Ella.
>> I [ __ ] hate her so much.
>> Well, I told you she was a [ __ ] Her voice is like an octave above Alvin and the Chipmunks.
>> Yeah. I don't I don't even know what to say. She's just a [ __ ] raging [ __ ] and I hate her.
>> Get angry. I have always told you that it is okay to get angry. Do you believe me? And she has this Polaroid on her door that she took with my camera of her wearing my Mason sweater making this stupid face. And every time I pass it, I just want to kill her and myself.
>> Well, it's not there anymore.
>> What do you mean?
>> It's not there. I saw it up on my way here and it pissed me off. So, I took it down.
>> You are amazing.
>> Disgusting. Here's what you want me to do.
>> Do it.
Fred, I want to save every little stupid piece of this stupid thing. This is not as easy as it looks.
[ __ ] You want to chop right down the middle of her face.
>> I know much better now.
>> I don't.
>> Dear Carly, no. You are a stupid.
I won't pour acid >> on your face if you never speak to me again. That's amazing, Ella.
No.
Okay. Okay. Wait, let me give you the rest. Wait, no. No, we can't. We shouldn't actually do this. It's too mean. It's too mean. Because she's my neighbor. We have like neighborly relations things to worry about.
>> We go on vacation in 3 days.
>> Yeah, but then when I get back, I have to brush my teeth next to her for like 6 months.
>> So, you will in sweet, sweet silence.
>> But Oh my god.
Bomb detonated.
>> You are the sauciest mix. What can I say?
>> Thank you. That makes me feel sort of a little bit better.
>> Good. I'm glad. Can we talk about something else now?
>> Fine. What? What do you want to talk about?
>> I don't know what's going on in your screenplay.
>> That's like more crap about me. You shouldn't have to hear about me all the time.
>> I want to.
>> Thank you. Cuz I've actually worked on a lot since yesterday.
>> Good.
The punk girl is hiding the girl.
>> Yeah. And the man suddenly shows up.
>> He shows up. How does he know where she is?
>> I told you he's so powerful. So the punk girl like tells the girl to run out the back of the warehouse and hide and that she'll get her when the man is gone. So the man comes in and he's talking to the punk girl and he's asking where the girl is. And the punk girl just won't give up the girl's whereabouts. She's being really loyal, you know, but he knows everyone's weaknesses and he knows the punk girl likes drugs. Um, what drug, Ella?
>> Like a very bad one, like heroin or something addictive and tempting.
>> Okay.
>> And she sees it and she takes a moment and says she still won't give up the girl's location >> at a girl.
>> But >> uh-oh.
>> The punk girl asks if she can have a little bit, like a taste of the drugs.
Like if you want a small amount of drugs, you'd call that maybe a taste, right?
So she asks, he gives her a little bit.
She snorts them off the back of his hand.
>> Nobody would take drugs like that.
>> What do you mean?
>> They just wouldn't. It's not realistic.
They would put it on their gums.
>> Okay. Well, they do that. And the punk girl feels the effect of the drugs and she just tells him that the girl's out the back of the warehouse. So the girls on the road again, you know, she buys hair dye and changes her hair again and makes it brown. She hitches a ride with a trucker and asks to go wherever he's headed. So, she's at some small town main location and she's just there.
>> So, what does she do next?
>> She goes to a diner. She has no money, so she just gets water.
>> Harsh brain. But this boy, this guy buys her coffee. He just finished working on the docks for the morning, and they get to talking, and he offers to let her stay with him. That's a good idea. She just got out of an abusive relationship with a 50-year-old sex offender, so shocking up with a stranger seems like an awesome plan.
>> No, this guy is good. He's like nice, you know, fishermanly stock, you know.
She just senses that this guy is really good. He gives her a dress, like an old one that used to belong to his mom who's dead.
>> How sweet. He takes her to his fishing shack to his favorite place.
>> That sounds sleazy.
>> It's not. And she has sex with him and it's her first time.
>> Even though she was the love slave of a sick old man.
>> Mhm.
>> Does she tell him she's a virgin?
>> No. But he just, you know, kind of like knows to be very kind and gentle, I think. She loves living with this guy.
She totally takes care of him, you know.
Then something awful happens. She gets pregnant.
>> No. The man shows up. She has to leave, like, keep moving. And the guy understands, and he gets one of his fisherman friends to drive her to a bus station nearby. She's overwhelmingly sad, of course, and so is he. He asks if he'll find her sometime, and she says yes, but who knows if that's like even true. I'm sorry that I just like called wrote you the email and asked for the book. I just didn't know anyone else in our class and I don't like I didn't mean to be rude cuz I know the email didn't really say anything besides like can I borrow can I come by and borrow your book?
>> I mean it was it was a little weird but it's not really a big deal. It's okay.
>> Okay.
>> I think Yeah, I'm f Yeah, it's cool.
Don't worry about it.
>> Okay. Do you find the homework challenging? The homework?
>> The homework? Is that like homework >> to be? No, not really.
>> Really?
>> Yeah. Not Well, >> I think it's kind of hard. Like I feel like I need someone to like unpack it for me. It's really dense.
>> I do talk to my mom about it, which is totally kind of cheating. But >> how come is she like a shrink or something?
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, >> well, she's not really a shrink, but she's like a therapist or something. So she can like help you with the with the work.
>> Do you um do you talk to her about like your feelings a lot because she's a therapist?
>> Well, she's pretty sneaky about it. She definitely talks to me about it, but I don't She doesn't really couch it as if that's what's going on, but it's definitely what's going on, you know?
>> That's That's so funny. Yeah, totally.
Totally. Is your dad a therapist, too?
Therapists are always like married to other therapists. I've noticed I >> He's dead.
>> Oh, really?
>> Yeah. He was murdered.
>> Are you serious?
>> That's absol That's totally not a funny joke.
>> It's not. It's actually not a joke. He's He Yeah.
>> Was Are you serious? Cuz I actually just can't tell if you're serious right now.
>> Um I'm serious. He was Oh my god, I'm so sorry. That's horrible.
>> It's okay.
>> Did it happen when you were really young?
>> Pretty young. Yeah.
>> Oh my god.
Oh >> well.
>> Don't worry about it.
>> Okay, >> it's cool.
>> Sorry. I always ask too many questions and then like accidentally make people say things they don't feel like saying out loud.
>> Well, I'm going to pee.
>> Okay, I'll be waiting.
I was playing. I found your recorder.
>> No, I thought it was something. It was weird.
>> Do you play this thing? Like, are you like a serious recorder player?
>> Are there serious recorder players?
>> You have roommates?
>> Yeah, yeah, cuz there's a bunch of rooms in the house. Who lives here?
>> Uh, these guys, Jared and Peter.
>> Are they your friends?
I mean, probably. Well, actually, no.
Not really.
>> No, >> not not really.
>> Are they nice? Do you like them?
>> They're They're pretty cool. They're I mean, they're they keep to themselves.
>> That's cool. They're chill. They like let you have people over and like play music and whatever.
>> Yeah, basically.
Is it okay if I stick my gum to your wall? I don't know.
>> Can I?
>> Yeah, sure. Please.
>> Okay, >> go for it. It's all you.
>> Okay. Thank you. I didn't know where to put it.
>> Mhm.
>> Are you okay? Oh, ow.
>> Careful.
>> Sorry.
>> No, it's fine.
>> Oh my god.
Thank you.
>> Sorry.
>> Sorry. I have a bunch of buttons here I can get. Oh, that's cool. You got it.
>> Sorry, I have hair in my mouth.
>> I mean, where is this going? You mean like what do you mean like our relation?
What do you mean? Do you mean like are we going to have sex? Is that what you mean?
>> Yeah.
>> Oh. Um I'd be totally fine with having sex with you. The the only issue is that I I actually like I haven't done it that much. So I just like don't know if I'd be that like good at it or whatever.
Does that make sense?
>> What?
>> Like I just don't know if I'd be that like like I'd like know exactly what I was doing. But like, >> how about yo?
>> Okay, >> look.
>> Okay, >> if >> if you want to have sex >> Uh-huh.
>> just don't say anything.
>> Okay.
Hey, not so bad.
Mhm.
You know, if you want.
I mean, I would be willing to make it, you know, this, I guess, between us a little more real even.
>> What do you mean?
>> I mean, what?
>> I don't like a relationship, you know?
Well, I think I mean that's like really sweet of you obviously and I really appreciate it, but I just I think like since we're about to, you know, we haven't really known each other for very long, like we just haven't known each other for very long.
>> Yeah. I mean, I suppose that's true, but well, I mean, whatever. I mean, how many times do you meet people that you feel like you've known forever and you know you were just introduced or you know known people since you were like five and like you don't know [ __ ] about them.
>> Yeah.
>> What does it matter? It doesn't really matter.
>> Yeah, I guess you're right.
>> Besides, like I feel like I haven't connected this well with someone since like since my pops died. So that seems like seems pretty important.
I don't know.
>> Yeah. No, I know. Um it's I guess it's just that break is coming up, you know, and it's like 4 weeks long and like we're not going to see each other. So I kind of just feel like maybe we just shouldn't start anything, you know, now and that maybe we can just like look at it again when we get back.
I mean, you can totally, you know, like write me an email or whatever over break, but second.
>> Okay.
Is this an okay time? Okay.
You didn't have to be so mean to her, you know.
>> Yeah. I'm sorry.
It was like totally more I don't want to make excuses, but it really was more Edy than it was me. And I know that I didn't have to act that way.
I was just really humiliated and upset and confused because I felt like you were saying to me that you didn't want to have a relationship and then suddenly there you were with Carly in this thing that I don't know what it is but >> but I mean who ever said anything about a relationship?
>> Well, I just assumed because Carly is so like relationship oriented and >> Carly's just weird. She just like she just says things and doesn't even doesn't even think about it. She's >> okay.
>> So, you're not starting a relationship with her?
>> No. Not Not starting a relationship with Carly or anybody? Not now.
>> Can I ask you a question?
>> Yeah.
>> Did I do something wrong here?
No, you didn't. No, you didn't do anything wrong.
It's just >> Could you >> It's just sometime sometimes you mother me.
>> Okay.
>> And that's a good thing. That's a good thing because because I'm really [ __ ] up and that helps and it feels good.
That that's also a bad thing, you know?
I mean, that's it's >> like annoying.
>> Not even annoying. Maybe just existentially bad.
>> I guess I just like can't tell like what you're thinking ever.
>> You assume that I actually think about things.
>> What?
>> No. Like I mean you assume that like I really think you know about things which I don't always do Yeah, it's freakishly warm.
So excited to get home.
>> I know. I know. New York. I'm really excited to get out of here.
>> You want to split a cab from the airport?
>> Yeah, that's totally good idea. Let's do that. Sweet. Sweet.
>> Did you get all your work done?
>> I did.
>> High five.
Woo.
>> Yep. How about you?
>> Yeah. Yeah, I did. I mean, I got the screenplay done, which was like the main thing that I was worried about.
>> Oh my god, that's awesome.
Congratulations.
>> Thank you.
>> Muzzle top.
>> Okay, so the girls hacked all her hair off and it's really sort of short and black.
>> All the momentum in the script is hair momentum. So now she looks like Edith Head or like you in the ninth grade.
>> Shut up. She knows that she needs to get far away. So she takes the bus to the desert. And then the man shows up. What?
From where? He just walks up and what happens? They talk for a moment and then the girl pulls a gun from her bag and she holds it up and she shoots him and he looks shocked and then he falls over dead. Holy [ __ ] And she looks at him and then she walks away.
Where is she going?
>> Who knows? I mean, she's just sort of moving forever into the horizon, walking for miles, becoming a speck.
>> Will she be okay?
