Record Selection with Gouge Away & Nothing (Wanna Hear It Records, Boston MA)Added:
[music] >> We're nothing.
>> We're Gouge Away. And we're here at >> Sorry, here at Run For Cover Records.
>> [music] >> And we're going to steal a Run For Cover sign and buy records.
Yeah.
Who we with? We're with Run For Cover Records. We're with Gouge Away and Nothing. We're here to pick out some records. We're going to talk about them, but I don't care about them records or music.
So, I'm not going to pick a record out.
I'm different than everybody.
That's my whole thing. I'm just different.
I don't like music.
I do like that band. They're pretty good.
Damn, what is that? It's a single, Shell Shock.
>> Oh, okay. Hey, I'm Tommy from Gouge Away. I play drums. He plays drums.
Yeah. He plays really good drums. Never seen this before. I've never seen this one actually, either. And it's got Thieves Like Us on the other side. That song Dude, so good. I'd probably say Lowlife is my favorite record of theirs.
>> Me, too.
Only real ones know. Dude, yeah.
Especially that uh Elegia song or Elegia song or whatever. Although, if they're listening, they should [ __ ] press uh Skull Crusher on vinyl. The demo from Lowlife. I don't know if I've ever heard it. Dude, basically just drums and bass, and it's just like so [ __ ] heavy and awesome. And it's only on CD.
Really? I don't even know what a CD is.
No. That's why I haven't heard it.
So, I'm a loser.
>> [laughter] >> I do like this band. I used to like them more in the Depêche Mode, but now I like more than New Order [ __ ] Yeah, take this away.
>> [laughter] >> What else you got?
Uh Tenement, uh The Blind Wink. I'm not super familiar with this record specifically, but Napalm Dream is great and the double album that's after this one is like honestly like top 10 records of all time. They make really good merch, too.
Yeah. I definitely borrowed a couple of their colorways. And they like screen print everything themselves, too.
>> They They're one of them.
They do it all and really cool album covers. They do crazy album artwork all the time. All right. Shoutout to Tiniment. So good. That's what they look like.
Do you have another one of those you can say?
I got you, bro.
I'm the producer here. We got that.
Test.
Here I have Sabotage by Black Sabbath.
They They got that from Beastie Boys. I was told that this cover was very spur of the moment.
And they all got dressed really quick and as you can see that Ozzy's wearing a kimono. The back is awesome.
The front is awesome. So, they didn't like the cover of the record, but it just became that way and I like the juxtaposition cuz they kind of sabotaged themselves. It's got a hole in the sky.
It's got Symptom of the Universe.
Can't go wrong with it. Rest in peace, Ozzy.
Jim Croce Greatest Hits.
Definitely part of the van playlists.
Operator. Is he smoking a blunt? You don't mess around with Leroy Brown. I don't know what it is.
What do you think it is? I don't think they made blunts back then. I don't think that he they made a blunt like big, yeah, but Time in a Bottle, Operator.
Died in a horrific plane crash. At least he died doing what he loved.
Me, too, dude. Whole band died, too.
It's going to happen to us, right?
That's where you're going with this?
>> [laughter] >> I mean, you could immortalize yourself through song. It's so sad. Yeah, I don't know how I feel.
>> [laughter] >> Oh my god, the packaging. It's a pocket.
And Black, one of my favorite bands of all time.
I wish I could sound like Karen O' Yaman.
That's who I'm going for, even though it's not even close. Um I love them so much, and I love this music EP. I did a guest spot with them, um, live for Salem.
And that was like a dream come true for me.
I was torn between these two. I was torn between a lot of things. This Hot Snakes record is one of my favorites. I found out about it when I was like 15 or 16.
And between the guitar tones and just the energy, the vocal, I don't know, it was just something really got me amped about it. To this day, I still like throw it on if I'm like trying to force myself to jog. I kind of hate running, so that gets me through it. No Hands probably my top track off that one, right here.
It's called Automatic Midnight. Now, this one might get a lot of hate for, but I don't really care. This is, um, the Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker Blink-182 record from, I don't know. I started playing drums when I was like 10 years old. Found out about this record.
I drummed to it every day for like like three to four hours a day. The tempos are probably like 20, 30 BPMs faster than they should be.
It really taught me to overplay as a drummer for better or worse. It also taught me to goof off.
When I'm playing music, cuz it's supposed to be fun. So I love, uh, for in particular I don't know if it shows the track titles, but the live version of Pathetic off this record opposed to the one on Enema of the State.
That's my top choice. What are you holding on to here? Oh, I got Squeeze?
45s and under. Looks like a collection of uh, their singles and stuff. Uh, my dad got me into them when I was a kid.
Especially like, um, Black Coffee in Beds a good one. Pulling Muscles from the Shells like the catchy, one of their like catchier songs.
There's good stuff on here. I like the cover. Yeah, the cover's awesome. But it's so common like I see this in every like record store ever. But every time I see the cover just like pops out to me.
This something else.
Well, I know this guy. Yeah, we got guys. What we got, Ken?
Tony Molina, that's my favorite record of his, Front of the Truth. You just made this decision on this tour, right?
That this is your favorite one. No, I've known this one. Me and Zack kind of debated about it. His is Kill the Lights. Kill the Lights is better.
Nah, I like both of them. They're both great. And then it's like Wow, surprise, surprise. Live in Italy, Kozelek.
Very stacked a track list. It's mostly Benji songs. Have you heard any of this record before?
Yeah, does he does he go on any banters? He has to, it's part He has to always. Yeah, I'm seeing him next month.
And he might attack me verbally. When he sees your haircut he's Yeah, I'm sitting in the very front row.
And the cool part about this record is my name is on it, and that's why it's worth $9.99. Let's go back to Tony for a second.
What's your favorite track on this one?
I mean I'm going to tell you what the best one is after you pick.
Old enough to know. Okay, you're right.
>> Yeah, all right.
Uh-oh. We moving on? Yeah, I need to do another Gadsby before we get out. Yeah.
We how you feeling tonight?
Huh? How you feeling? Should we ready?
Yeah.
Hey. I'm Mick from Gadsby. I play guitar.
He's great guitarist. Thanks. Here's my pick. Yeah, what do we got? Acetone.
Okay.
>> from 2000. It says their last record.
Uh it's kind of like alt-country, slowcore. All right, it's really really really great. Yeah, I've heard the name before, but I never heard the record. So I'll definitely check it out.
>> It's not even their best one, but they're they're really hard to find.
Okay. All right. Let's suggest everybody check this album. We like this one. If you like Wednesday, you'll probably like it, too. I'm sitting here and two are on tour with.
I haven't heard any of their songs yet.
Not I think I would like it. Christina told me I would. What else you got over there?
Oh, well, I think it's too late to talk about that.
Cuz that's something I do know about.
Yeah.
We all love Talking Heads in gradual This is just like the best and the best of punk funk, you know? Stop Making Sense.
All of the best the best track isn't on here from the live one. It's the Oh, maybe it is. It's a girlfriend is better. Yeah. Where they slow it down in the beginning and they go super fast.
It's awesome.
All right. Good job.
>> Thanks. I'm letting Zach play drums in nothing.
Uh this is a big me and my twin brother grew up on Race Traitor.
Perfect records.
And then the one I liked more than this was their split with Bring It Down. That It wasn't here. The most chaotic hardcore record that I ever heard in back in the day and I think I listened to it pretty recently and it's still just as [ __ ] insane. Perfect cover, too. Like Also best band name of all time. Yeah, it's pretty hard. Yes. This is also seminal record. I'm a North Carolina boy. Grew up in North Carolina.
You like it in And this was like our hometown heroes by a million. I feel like it is like underrated as far as how whatever what is the impact it had on the metal world in the hardcore world at the time, but Then I got my favorite Neil Young soundtrack which is Strange Cousins, the last movie he did, but Boy in the Heron.
The soundtrack itself is so unbelievably beautiful. The movie was so good. It's the first record I saw when I walked in.
This is the ultimate one. Body.
The greatest band to ever live on Earth.
I don't say that cuz now I play with the Body sometimes, but and my best friends. This is the first thing I think I got by them or heard by them one way or the other way way back >> [clears throat] >> in 2005 when they were touring with it.
And it's just Cop Killer and Dead Cops, two covers.
Um sounds like complete [ __ ] It's incredible.
But um my favorite cover you can't even see it, but barely says The Body and it's just got the insert and it's like I still have a copy that Lee gave me when he moved to Connecticut. The best people in the world, the best band in the world, and this is one of my favorite releases they ever did. Introduce yourself to the camera.
Bob Bruno.
Play bass in Nothing. I picked Camera Obscura French Navy 7-in. Very cool. One of their best songs. Amazing strings. A very nice band. Very good people.
I watched uh I also Kelly You can't go wrong with this. Yeah, hell yeah.
I mean Talking of a Clown is probably my favorite way of an album. That was Miles to Nowhere is on it here.
That was first three records plus some bonus tracks. That's a that's a Nothing soundtrack >> song for Definitely. The cover of the Jeff. Is that doing it?
It does like I mean I like I like The Famous. All right. What are you picking out?
Yeah, what do you want me to listen to?
Uh no funny business, either. Don't give me a Boston hardcore record.
Okay. I think that this just could be valuable to you. Really? Yeah, I think there's some guitar tones on here you might not have heard in a while. Okay, who Tell me about this cuz I don't know what this is. Really? Yeah.
>> Um this is a band called Final Resting Place. Okay. I believe they're on Days Records. Are they? Mhm. Shout out to Days Records. It's kind of like uh slam death metal. Really? I got nothing. I like the album title I mean the song title of Final >> Yeah, they know what they're doing with the aesthetics. Mind blows some alliteration.
It kind of looks like it would be uh 2000s metalcore, but it's more slam death metal, I would say. It's $26.
Is that how much records cost?
Christina's still hiding. There she is.
Were you ready? Did you pick a record yet? I did. I picked one. I did. I picked a record. Where is it at? All right, this is my record. Yeah, go get it.
>> [laughter] >> But I went through great lengths to get it cuz I love it so much.
>> Really?
>> Yes. What's your favorite part about this record? What's my favorite part?
Um my favorite song is probably Toothless Coil.
>> Okay. Do you want to interview me about your record? Mhm. Okay. That's what I'm doing here. I'm not They They hired Run for Cover hired me.
I love this record. It's hard to pick a favorite Nothing record, but this one might be it. Really? Yeah.
What was your favorite song to play with Nothing? My favorite song to play >> You have two mics on you. I do?
[laughter] What happened?
I'll let you off the hook.
Did you? Yeah. I feel very on the hook.
>> [laughter] >> But I want to pick a record to buy, not this one. I'll buy this one.
Yeah.
We tried to book these people for Slideaway as well, but [ __ ] [snorts] ridiculous band. Really good. And they're playing shows again, too.
I didn't learn anything from them.
The Go.
>> [snorts] >> The best band from Boston ever.
The Swirlies.
And I'm taking this record home cuz this is cool. I only collect records that I have some kind of uh connection to personally, like friends, bands, or like some sort of nostalgic point. I have maybe like 60 records at home, and they can all be connected back to me in some sort of way. So, swirlies love them.
Now, we're going to go shake down Jeff for that company card.
>> [music] >> Hello.
Ready to buy these records for us. Yeah.
Give me the merch. Yeah. The cards.
Yeah, we need them, too. The live record. Let's go.
Shh, don't tell Jeff.
>> [music] >> Five records, though.
The flying Here's the numbers.
More lights. So, we got everything we came here for. [music] Right? Yeah. Thank you.
Thanks Run for Cover. Thanks Warner here records.
Check out the new Ganja White record.
>> [music] >> It's coming out soon.
>> [laughter] >> That's news to me.
Check out the new Melvins record. It's coming out soon.
