Now, the University of Iowa is helping preserve the legacy of Mildred Wart Benson, the Iowa native who wrote 23 of the first 30 Nancy Drew books. She created the bold independent character while living a life just as adventurous as a journalist and even a pilot. Her identity wasn't revealed until decades later, turning one of literature's biggest mysteries into a story of its own. The university now has a display of the alumni's memorabilia.
