Baxter elegantly demonstrates that a knife’s true character is not found in its factory finish, but in the unique metallurgical history written by daily use. This series turns the simple act of peeling an apple into a sophisticated masterclass on the functional beauty of carbon steel.

What's New? Apple Chat with Baxter: Buck'n Case and Axe Handles.Añadido:
Greetings and welcome to Apple chat with Baxter. You're entering THE TIGER PIT.
APPLE CHAT, why not? If you guys don't know what Apple chat is, basically I peel an apple with a knife trying to get patina on my carbon steel blades and just kind of ramble on as if I don't ramble on enough in my videos.
So I am having a hard time deciding whether or not to do it with my Buck 110 with a 5160 carbon steel. I've already cut up open a honeydew and haven't really noticed much.
Maybe the apple will do better.
Um I do know that 5160 doesn't quite patina like Case's carbon steel or 1095 carbon steel.
But I have never actually peeled an apple with a peanut and we just finished up peanut week recently and I figured I have a carbon steel peanut. Why not? It is apple red. Actually they just call it dark red.
Um and then I'm will chat a little bit about the Axe handle.
So, you know, I don't know what to start with. Maybe I'll start with the peanut and if I don't do it in one piece and break the skin, I'll go over to the 110 or maybe I'll if I do it all with the peanut, I will cut the apple up with the 110. We'll see.
So what's been going on? It's been quite a few days since I've had a video.
Honestly have not been too much in the mood, but I have been really busy.
Um I haven't had too many new knives come in. So nothing really new to share and I could do videos on this and that and comparisons, but like I said, been really busy.
I got my friend Jeremy's um vintage motorcycle going and well, so we've gone for a few motorcycle rides and I think it was yesterday. This video will probably come out later. So day before yesterday um there was a music festival in my hometown here and when I grew up we didn't we didn't really have music festivals. We would rent out the Plumbers Union Hall and have concerts. Bands would come up from Chico. We'd go down to Chico and play.
Occasionally we'd play the Civic Amphitheater.
But this was an actual festival with tons and tons of bands. So it was really nice to see musicians that have been a part of this community for 32 years and they're still playing music and seeing some old friends. Some serious inspirations to my musical career.
Well well that is what once was my musical career.
I generally don't play music that much anymore, but Jeremy and I have been talking about starting the band back up.
Well, enough rambling about that. Let's see. This might be a little difficult cuz of how how I have the camera, but let's see if I can peel this apple with this little peanut.
This is carbon steel. It is not 1095. It is just Case's carbon steel.
And you know, apparently you can cut huge submarine sandwiches with a peanut as Zack and good knife reviews has proven.
And you know, they're just little small good carries and you can use them for a lot of things.
I really like This is one of my favorite Case peanuts that I have. I only have two of course. I do like the dark red carbon steel combination and spoiler that is one of the Axe handles that I had pre-ordered.
It has not shipped yet, but one of the other Axe handles that I have pre-ordered has finally shipped from Red Hill Cutlery. So when that gets here I don't know, next week sometime I will do a video on it. I guess I won't spoil what it is, but I'm really excited.
Um On another note, what else has been keeping me busy? Well, apparently Siege, my friend who came down here to a vintage motocross race and sell t-shirts at the last race I was going to go see him in Bell. He got injured on Saturday.
He was going downhill and his front end slid slid out and whoop boink landed on his head and well, he has a helmet on, but he broke his collarbone and broke five ribs.
Um so the problem is he's getting surgery and there's the CZ Nationals happening north of Sacramento and he needs me to help him sell his t-shirts. So I'll be down there this upcoming weekend helping him out selling some t-shirts.
I'm meeting some awesome people. Maybe I'll get some footage if possible.
Boy, this is a really teeny handle to peel an apple.
Hurt my hand.
>> [snorts] >> So I'll be doing that. So yeah, so lots going on. You know, the weather has just been perfect lately. Not too hot, not too cold. So really good riding weather. Summer does get hot here, so I'm trying to get some riding in.
Um the Axe handles. Yes.
Uh some people they've been trickling out. People have been getting them. Some people have been getting good ones. Some people have been getting bad ones.
There is a member of my community.
Uh a commenter who has some bad experience and he said I wish I could post some photos of it and I said, well you can. Just click on my community page. Just click on community and you can post whatever you want there within reason.
Um and good or bad, I encourage everybody to post their experiences with Case knives, you know.
Uh cuz it'll the word will get out there and maybe they'll do something about it.
This one turned out absolutely exceptional. Centered blade, sharp blade, no blade wobble.
No major gapping.
And one thing I forgot to mention which I'll mention in a second when I finish this apple is that the Axe handle in that video I forgot to mention that it is smooth in the half stop position.
What? This is the first Case pattern I've ever seen that has been smooth in the half stop position.
They are all I'll show you in a second, you know, proud and that's how it's always been. A lot of knives are like that. It's kind of a new thing.
Uh it's a fit and finish thing. Uh-oh, almost broke it.
Where people or manufacturers have been doing very smooth in the you know, half stop position.
RoseCraft Blades, Jack Wolf knives.
It's so it's kind of fascinating to me that I completely forgot to mention that and it's probably a Bill Ruple design.
I mean the knife is a Bill Ruple design, but he probably incorporated incorporated that in the design. Wanted it.
Very cool that they are coming out with the Axe handles. That's pretty much most of it right there.
Pretty cool that they are coming out with the Axe handles.
And let me show you that real quick.
So my Tequila Sunrise.
Look at that.
Getting reflection here, but smooth in the half stop position.
relatively smooth in the open position and smooth in the closed position. I have never seen a Case pattern like that. As you can see, well I'm not going to shut this one. This is smooth in the open position, but in the half stop position you can see how the back spring stands up and that's just how it's always been.
So I'm not sure if Case is trying to be competitive in the market, they better be making some really good knives. But I believe that's probably a Bill Ruple design.
You know, as it it's all in how everything is set up and designed that you get that.
So very fascinating. Now I was looking at the poster in my community page. He had a shield which was totally crooked and it made me kind of think. Look at this shield. Is it crooked? I guess it might kind of the bottom of the bottom shield might kind of point that way a little bit, but I mean the handle kind of sways. So I looks pretty straight to me. But I did notice that the shield is smaller than the mini trapper.
Um this one is exceptional and I'm looking forward to my next one.
Um haven't carried it too much, but a really good cool pattern and uh Case be forewarned. If I get a bad one, you're going to get a bad review.
Now I did ask Red Hill to obviously check it out.
Already starting to get some patina on my carbon steel peanut.
Very cool.
Apples do really nice job.
Set that aside for the thumbnail photo in a bit.
Well um >> [clears throat] >> I want to cut this up with the 110.
I'm sure the peanut could probably do it.
But look at that blade. I mean I have to go around it a few times.
Uh so not the best knife to peel an apple with. It obviously works, but with my big hands it's really not that much to hang on to right there.
But maybe I can get the tip in there and get the last little bit of this.
So what else did I want to say? Oh, well if you don't know, it's Jerry's the knife guy Pete's birthday today but this video is coming out. So by the time you see it, it will have been the other day.
He's such an awesome member of the community. He's been around for a while and I truly don't believe that this community would be the same without Pete. Pete is just you know, he tells it like it is. He's one hell of a guy. Um and he got some gifts from a couple of members of the community. So, definitely go check out those videos. He had posted it on Sunday morning really early.
Uh so, I do believe that's all I really wanted to talk about.
Um but yeah, finally got some patina on this peanut. I do have a few other small carbon steel blades uh like my half congress. I have the gray bone that I've been wanting to get patina on.
Maybe I'll try that sometime.
Um >> [clears throat] >> I'm not sure.
But um I do love the patina that the carbon steel blades get.
And an apple does so well on Case knives. Now, uh Mo of Kirby Creek said, you know, that the 5160 will patina. It just takes time and it's more of just a haze. It's It's definitely not like 1095 carbon steel.
But this thing is a razor and it made short work of cutting open a honeydew.
But I mean, obviously a honeydew is not like hard use cutting, but uh a big blade and you know, I thought I would get, you know, something, but I haven't yet. So, we'll just see. I'll just have to use this knife more and more. Now, you might say it's sacrilege, Baxter, because this is uh number I don't know if you can see that.
The blade there, it's number 100 of 100 made. Now, I do believe they made more than 100, but 100 were actually serialized and it's rare nowadays that uh Buck actually serializes blades.
They'll do stealth runs and Buck of the months and say one of 500, but they don't really serialize them.
Uh so, very cool. But uh this is a user.
It's the uh charcoal diamond wood also known as dymalux, but they called it diamond wood back then.
Uh brass and carbon steel. Carbon steel Bucks are very rare now. I mean, they used to have carbon steel in the custom shop years ago and a lot of people want them and you have to go back and watch my video on this. I've wanted one for quite a while and they must have found some old stock.
Uh cuz this does not have a stamp on it a a date stamp.
I do believe it was 2016.
Uh but it does have custom USA. So, they must have had these blades left over from the custom shop and put them together um as a Copper and Clad exclusive.
So, uh I do believe that's it. I mean, hopefully I'll get some more content coming out here if I uh can think about what the heck I want to do videos about that are actually interesting.
Um uh I do have some Barlows on pre-order.
I will have to seek out some fantastic beers to do some one more Barlow one more beer videos.
Um they are a channel favorite to some people.
But being here in northern Cal, the beer selection isn't quite as good as it was in the northwest. Now, I can go to a specialty shop and seek out some better beers and that's probably what I'll have to do. Otherwise, you're just going to get Coors and Miller Lite.
Woah, just kidding.
Well, I don't want this video to get too long.
Thank you very much, Zach, for doing peanut week. It was a blast. Um these are really awesome small capable knives.
Had such a great time carrying uh a different peanut every day. Uh I had a few more peanuts. I actually It was 7 days, I posted an eighth day for the fun of it. It's just short and some photos. And actually I still had two more peanuts left. I had a orange bone rough rider.
And what's the other one peanut I have?
Oh, it's an orange bone frost. Uh really bright neon orange and it has three stars on it. Represents Tennessee.
Maybe next time.
If you do not know, I do believe it is Kyle over at Chillbillys Outdoors was talking about doing a week challenge um on Sodbusters Juniors. Kind of like what Zach did with the peanut, but carry your Sodbuster for a week.
You know, you can carry other knives with it.
Um and I do believe it's any type of Sodbuster. It doesn't have to be a Case Sodbuster. It could be a Baron Son. It could be a Marbles. It could be anything. Uh carry and I do believe he said the better last week of end of April. So, that'll probably be coming up. I will be joining in on that. I always love these challenges. They're really fun. Makes it a little bit easier to decide what I'm actually going to carry for the day.
It's like, well, I'll take my pick of Sodbuster and then grab something to go with it. So, I appreciate you all joining me in the tiger pit. I'm going to go before I make a huge mess and start chomping apple in your ear.
You all stay sharp, be kind, and take chances.
Just not with an axe handle.
>> [laughter] >> Ah, just kidding. There's some good ones out there. I got lucky. It's probably better to pick them up in person. I really thought that the Bill Ruple designs were going to be flawless. You know, like Case was going to make a step in the right direction. And well, they did. It didn't come with a burr and this one is good.
But boy, I've seen some doozy of pictures out there. If you want to look at more, go to my community page. Click on newest and scroll through a bit.
There's a few there.
You all stay sharp, be kind, and take chances.
Take care.
