Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) was a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case where the Court ruled 7-1 that racial segregation under Louisiana's Separate Car Act of 1890 did not violate the 14th Amendment, establishing the 'separate but equal' doctrine as constitutional; the lone dissenter, John Marshall Harlan, argued that the Constitution is colorblind and should not permit racial distinctions.

Plessy V Ferguson #dailyfacts #facts #otd #History #shorts追加:
Plessy v. Ferguson was a landmark United States Supreme Court case that was officially decided on May 18th of 1896 with a ruling 7 to 1 with only one dissenter. The court went on to determine that separate but equal is a fully valid method to have separate but equal facilities separated by only race.
This came as the man behind the court case, Homer Plessy, had boarded a whites-only train while going home in Louisiana, to which he was eventually charged. This directly violated Louisiana's Separate Car Act of 1890, which established separate cars for both whites and blacks. The Supreme Court would rule that this did not in fact violate the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution because it upheld separate but equal facilities. The lone dissenter, John Marshall Harlan, would argue that the Constitution itself was colorblind and did not see distinction of color.
