When superhero films attempt to differentiate their characters from established counterparts through darker, more complex narratives, they risk alienating audiences if the character transformation feels forced rather than organic. The Supergirl film reportedly faced criticism for presenting a hero who was 'a lot more dark and a lot less fun' than expected, with the film leaning heavily into emotional trauma and ambiguity through a 'tell, don't show' approach that didn't resonate with audiences. This case illustrates that while differentiation is valuable, filmmakers must ensure character changes serve the story authentically rather than simply being different for the sake of being different.

Supergirl a Dark and Less Fun Character Study追加:
So, it's been stated that Supergirl is a different type of film. Well, some of the latest reports are claiming that this film is completely different. And as a matter of fact, it's been described as a dark and far less fun character study than Superman.
>> [music] >> We got some more news on Supergirl. So, if you guys have been keeping up, it's been a tailspin of reports on what is essentially being called the final cut of the film. As we heard early test screenings late last year were over 2 hours, but the closer we get to the release, the shorter we know the film is getting. And this seems to be due to feedback and some of the reports I talked about already about the film's action being underwhelming and how the test screenings have had very mixed reactions for various reasons. Well, we got another update which again paints another bad picture. And again, these are verified people and sources that know people that watch test screenings.
And what we're hearing now is that essentially the hero in this film, Kara, doesn't really come off like a hero.
That she's a lot more dark and a lot less fun of a character than you might expect.
And that a lot of the film is leaning into the emotional trauma and ambiguity in relation to the character, her history, and what caused this trauma and not showing us all of it. It's more of tell, don't show of a style of approach outside of Krypton. And that a lot of people feel like that this doesn't work.
And that the character being so much more dark compared to what we saw and how they picture and what they're going for isn't really landing with a lot of people. And that despite the fact that this is a character-driven film, that it doesn't have the beats that you think it does. And feels like they're trying to build up the character arc way too quick for what we have here. Again, I could see how this might come across because hey, it's an hour and 45-minute film. So, hour and 40 with credits. You know, I could see what's going on. And again, I'm going to reserve judgment until I see it for myself and reviews come in.
But, we keep hearing from various reports, from different people, from proven audiences that it does have issues. They could still fix it in the end. Superman had tons of issues in early screenings that they clearly ended up fixing and we know they did, but this does worry me a little. I'm not going to lie cuz it would be unfortunate if after all this time we get a Supergirl film and it ends up being something that underperforms and flops like the original Supergirl film. And I appreciate that they're trying to do something different with Supergirl and make her different than Superman. That's always going to be welcome, but if it gets too in the way and you're trying to be too artsy and do things differently, maybe that hampers you. Don't make her girl Superman, but do something that's makes her different instead of what people are saying feels like forced dark direction for the sake of being different.
