In mountainous regions like the Sierra Nevada, precipitation type can transition from rain to snow as temperatures drop, particularly overnight and in the early morning hours when temperatures approach freezing. This transition creates hazardous travel conditions on mountain passes, with slick surfaces at night and in the morning, though conditions improve during the day as higher sun angles cause melting. Weather radar helps meteorologists track precipitation patterns, identifying areas of heavier rainfall and developing storm cells. Forecasters use probability percentages (such as 40% or 80% chance of precipitation) to communicate the likelihood of weather events, helping the public prepare for changing conditions.

Raining in the Sierra, eventually turning to snowAdded:
It's just rain for right now, but the snow level will drop into Wednesday morning. By Wednesday morning, we'll likely be snowing along our mountain passes here. The temperature up at Donner Lake is pretty close to freezing, though. It's already into the mid to the upper 30s. So, it's possible we could even see some snow up there later this evening, but majority of it would be overnight into Wednesday morning. and travel impacts overall will be minor, but it could still be slick at night into Wednesday morning. Not as bad during the day. So, here's a look at the radar here. We are seeing some pockets of heavier rainfall. We have these small little rain coursees, so it's kind of spotty hit and miss. It's not widespread right now, but we are getting the showers starting to develop here as an area of low pressure continues to move further south. Also, some rain showers just to the or along and east of Fallon and Reno. For the most part, it is dry.
So, it's either up in the Sierra or further to the east along and east of 95. Also, some lightning being detected as well. Further north, closer to the Nevada, California state line kind of straddling Wo County there. We are seeing a few rain showers there too with pockets of heavier rainfall. We are seeing one cell just to the west of Gerlock and Reno itself. Right now it is drying, but we do have some clouds. And overnight tonight and already by this evening, we're going to start to see more showers start to develop. It will be pretty soggy overnight and into Wednesday as well as we're going to see these rain bands rotate around this area of low pressure. Colder air moves in and can't last some thunder and lightning either. So keep the rain gear handy on Wednesday. It also will be cold for this time of year on Wednesday as well. We'll have a few breaks here and there, but plan on being a pretty active day on Wednesday. Not expecting a ton of snowfall up in the Sierra, but we are expecting some. And considering the fact that it's the end of May, it will be pretty cold for this time of year. And on Thursday, round two with the rain showers. Not quite as many as on Wednesday, but we still have a pretty good chance. And the best bet for the rainfall again Wednesday and Thursday.
Here's a look at the storm impacts here for fire starts. It's low as well as flooding, wind, and snow. But notice the chances aren't zero, but it is low. It will be slick though along your mountain passes at night and in the morning during the day thanks to higher sun angle. It will more than likely melt as it hits the pavement. As far as your 7-day forecast here, it still has a 40% chance for a few showers and thunderstorms here today. It picks up overnight into Wednesday morning and then again on Thursday with an 80% chance. On Thursday though, by Thursday afternoon, not we'll still see them.
We'll be hit and miss and scattered and then by Friday a 40% chance and then we dry out over the weekend. So the best bet to see some rain Wednesday and Thursday. Have a great rest of your day.
