Michael Breaks Down Saturday's Severe Thunderstorm Risk - abc27 News at 11

[00:00:09]>> Well, you see all that fine particulate matter in the air right there. I don't think I've ever looked forward to storms more than I'm looking forward to storms.

[00:00:18]>> And I'll tell you, if you were out at some point this afternoon, there was a period where it was better for a little bit, but now it's back.

[00:00:24]>> Yeah.

[00:00:24]>> And I'll show it to you on the time lapse here. Here's a look from Hummelstown. If you look here first thing in the morning, the horses are sleeping, but as we move throughout the morning here, it's thick. And then by about 1:00 in the afternoon, you start to see a little bit of a difference here in Hummelstown, and that's true for areas north and east of Harrisburg. Here we go at 4:00 in the afternoon. Looked decent, just looked hazy. And then by the time evening came, horses went back out, it got smoky yet again. So, we are dealing with another night of smoke, but this shield of smoke that was across really western part of our viewing area in southwestern Pennsylvania, that's going to start to lift off to the north and east here overnight tonight into the morning tomorrow as a warm front approaches, as you see here, and that's going to help clear things out along with some storms tomorrow. So, thankfully we're getting a change in wind direction here.

[00:01:08]However, once this comes uh storms come through, there might be more smoke here later Sunday into the early part of next week, but the good news is as of now it doesn't look nearly as thick. So, today we did make up to 85. That's after 3 days in the 90s, so that was a heat wave, not as long as last time. And like we thought, it wasn't going to be super humid either. Dew points were pretty manageable. They're in the 60s now, mid-60s, and I expect them to go up a degree or two tomorrow as this warm front right here passes through overnight into the early morning hours tomorrow on Saturday. And then after that, we have to keep an eye on the radar here throughout the day for some storms. So, let's try to time it out here on Saturday and see exactly what's going to happen.

[00:01:47]This is the window I'm most concerned about for some strong damaging winds, probably mid-afternoon, anytime after 1:00. These are going to be isolated storms at this point, so we're not looking at widespread severe weather.

[00:01:58]However, one or two of these storms could be on the stronger side. And then it's also going to favor eastern parts of Pennsylvania. And then later in the evening, a line's going to try to come through, but we see this very often where this line doesn't hold together here overnight. So, we'll see what happens. We'll see if we get enough energy robbed in the atmosphere here to get a weaker line here tomorrow night, but we'll keep an eye on that. So, we are under an enhanced risk for damaging winds tomorrow. So, again, damaging winds will be the main concern.

[00:02:26]However, with some of those afternoon storms, we really can't rule out a a brief spin-up tornado, especially east of us here, east of Harrisburg into the eastern part of Pennsylvania. So, again, that smoke does begin to clear here tomorrow, but I will warn you it could come back here by next week. Not as strong as it has been. And then temperatures here not too bad, 84 for Sunday. That's going to be a spectacular day. I think Monday's nice, too, 84 as well. We are tracking more storms on Tuesday. Some of those could be severe.
